IT'S BOOGIE TIME!!
Also 500,000 subs - Thanks sooooooo much :)
Congratulations on the 500k subs. Also, that amp sounds killer, good trade.
A Mesa! Woah!!! Congrats on 500K!
Try out the triple rectifier!
I have been playing Mesa bass amps for years and absolutely love what they put out. Since I've recently picked up guitar again, I'm playing a Katana, but would like to eventually upgrade to a MK25 or MK5 if I play guitar out
That's my dream amp head! Congrats man
And Darrell woke up one day and said "I need a Mesa" and the mid life crisis begins!
Old boy in Georgia Guitars and more next up: I sold all my guitars to buy an Harley Davidson motorbike”
It's Dimmebang Darrell Braun time!1
You don't mean mid life crisis do you lol
Scooped mid life crisis
@@michaelmolloy5154 I discovered the hard way that "midlife" is actually around 35. Most won't go much further than 70, and besides, there's not a whole lot of life after that even if you keep plodding past the old," Three scores and ten"...
Dual Rec owner here. Love these amps, and there's even more versatility in setup than shown here! Ch2 and Ch3 also have another mode called "Raw" mode, located on the same switch as the other modes, that is the "low gain" mode of those two channels. Dual Rectifiers also have switches on the back that can vary slightly by model, but do essentially the same thing:
First, a switch or set of switches that allows you to select either Diode or Tube rectification.
Next, a switch labeled "Spongy" and "Bold, and I copied a section from the owner's manual to explain this. " “SPONGY” works like a built in Variac, reducing all the internal voltages for a true vintage feeling and that extraordinary “brown sound.” Power is reduced some-what too, making it easier to achieve an overdriven power sound, especially when the RECTIFIER SELECT switch is in the VACUUM TUBE position."
Finally, there's a bias switch that allows you to choose between the stock 6L6 tubes or EL34's.
There's a great deal of versatility. I love my tri rec, had her for a year and over that year, my writing style (and constant tone chaser) has changed and experimenting has been great. Although, now I'm thinking 3 channels aren't enough lol. I'm thinking of saving for a road king, that extra channel gives a lot of freedom for a pushed clean tone, while still having the other clean channel, clean. Lol.
SIIIIIIIIICK dude
Good trade.
In 10 years this will still be a hell of a lot more valuable than your old helix.
how much are helix's? my buddy got a triple rec for like 600 bucks... he might have just got super lucky tho
@@verysillypenguin They come in a few versions, $800 for the LT and $1200 for the rack mount one and around $1500 for the floor board with customizable ribbons.
nice yea I feel like 1200 is the used market sweet spot. I got a dual rec years ago for that. prolly a mid 90s one. I still use it and it came with a gig case. I also got an axe fx ultra for that back before the 3 came out. I still use both. I like playing in the tube amp more but digital is definitely better work flow. tube amps you dail in one tone and leave it there forever lol. then it only sounds sick on one instrument and you need to buy more pedals. modelers you can dail unlimited patches and change amps in a snap. I've got my rec set pretty clean and dark. great for single coils but not humbuckers.
💯💯💯💯💯
...and you will be deaf, and evereyone everyone nerby will hate you....:-)
DBG is becoming every guitarist's wishlist- love the tone of that Mesa.
not mine, Ill stay away of anything that sound like a bad imitation of Kizz :-)
Next purchase? All the houses in a three block radius.
LOL!!!!
That is the problem
I bought that same amp brand new in 2006 and at the time (and several years after) I thought it was a 1 trick pony. then I started to really learn what it was capable of and it is DEFINITELY NOT a 1 trick pony. I can get a ton of different tones from Low gain blues, Marshall mid gain tones to full on face melt
I’ve parted ways with a lot of gear over the years but I’ll never separate with my triple rec.
Would you recommend Mesa over Bogner or a Fender hot rod?
Chase Olivier completely different beasts...
@@cnine5640 I have a TR and HR and really hard to get a great sound out of either.
Chris Wilson Thanks for the wisdom. I’ve been eyeing a revv D-20.
@@cnine5640 it depends what you play. What kind of music do you play?
Got a Dual Rectifier from Guitar Center for 1000usd a decade ago and it still keeps it's value and sound!
For the knobs being too hard to see, I used glow in the dark paint and added a dot where the marker in the knob is and that fixed it for my black spirit which also has that issue, depending in the quality of the paint you may have to retouch the marker a couple times but it helps a lot
That's a great idea!
I owned the combo version and it was fantastic. I also owned an F-50 and F-100 and can truly say that Mesa makes awesome amps.
20 year old me bought the triple rec with the 4x12 cab 17 years ago. I love my Mesa boogie. It never disappoints!
Love your videos, Darrell! You always have an accurate perspective, loaded with detailed demonstrations, packaged with an extremely positive attitude. You should have at _least_ a million subs right now.
Amazing sounding amp. The little Dual Rec Trem'o'verb combo is just one of the best things i've ever heard.
Your smile from the sound of the Mesa was priceless.
I recorded one of my favorite personal albums using a dual-rec head, and I was firmly in the JCM900 camp at the time. This is a great get.
Man. I see it in your smile every time you play with the Mesa. A satisfied player. Happy for you. 👍
My ears are drooling! This is the way guitar was meant to sound!
She's a beaut Clark!!! I'd say you got one heck of a deal - great classic amp!!
Mesa amps always sound so effing bad ass...they just don't disappoint
Darrell !! You're understandably missing your "Blue Angel", then talked about how Channel 1 was so close to "that sound".
But while playing Channel 2 in Vintage mode.... you couldn't quit smiling... that's a beautiful thing dude!
Great trade man! That’s killer. Something I’ve been wanting for a while myself
......this amp is by far my favorite!!!! Traditionally and often mistaken as a metal amp only, this amazing beast is one of the most versatile amps ever made. The one that beats it, is the Mesa Boogie Roadking (which I also have), 4 channels + reverb with other options (such as tubes selection with various combinations etc.)
But all in all, the Dual Rectifier is just an amazing Amp!!!! 👍🔝
Surprisingly many pop and rock guitarists used to use Rectos!
It’s hugely versatile. I love mine. It’s basically the next best thing to having three amps at a gig.
Agreed! I love the versatility of my Roadking!
I'm thinking of the roadking for that extra channel. I love the jazz tones that I can get out of her, then straight to a balls to the wall-metal tones.
Yeah I love my roadster 2x12 combo
Oh man, when you started first talking about the Mesa acquisition, I said to myself "He's missing the Blue Angel. After I heard Darrell start playing I said "I miss the Blue Angel."
@alan wake I think it was when he bought the Hughes & Kettner a while back.
@alan wake The H&K is a fantastic amp on it's own merits, but I think the purchase of the Mesa (clean channel) IS exactly what is implied here, a severe sense of angst having sold the Blue Angel, without having to admit it :)
I'm new to my Mesa but I love it. In fact, it was the Mesa patches in the modelers that made me want that amp. It's killer!
My recto is the heart and soul of my sound. Absolutely love them. Great amps that still sound awesome all these years later
Very cool. I've had my two channel Dual Rectifier for 27 years. Yes, what a beast. I think I'm going to keep it around for another 27 years. Ha. Rock on.
Great video Darrell congrats on acquiring another great amp! I remember in like 06, I had not yet played many of the great amps other than some classic Fenders. I moved to a town with a store that had all kinds of Mesas, and when I saw the dual rec I was afraid to try it because it looked like it could knock the building down. Killer looking thing, but at some point the guy wanted me to hear it. He started playing very accurate sounding Allman Brothers and blues tunes and I was so surprised by how big and how lush it sounded. Then he adjusted it and said “you can also do this” and played a few of the most crushing sounding chords I have ever heard! I didn’t know it would have such a range. Congratulations!
Game stepped up! Nice!
My man , you are in paradise! Butterflies in your stomach and why not?! Like a kid with a new bike!
Nice playing and great sound.
Keep'em coming !
Very nice! Sounds Great!
After many years of noodling at home with silly solid states amps and headphones, I found my old 70's Music Man, four Telefunken EL 34 power tubes, 130 watts, in the storage a few month back....and it's lethal once a couple of beers have found its way down the throat. That thing moves some air, doors, windows AND walls. Incredible. The Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier seems to be able to do the same, and with three channels. What a fantastic thing. Sounded amazing. Congratulations!
Congrats brother, love your channel.
It's just flat out cool.
love the warmth from a mesa just buttery
...that chug though! 👍 Great tones all the way around. Congrats on the guitar and all subs!
Exactly what chug are you talking about. I didn't hear any. Just someone poorly stumbling through a tone he's not comfortable with.
Classic amp. Love it.
Between Darrell and Ola my love for gear and all things guitar have increased 1000%
Oh man, that is beautiful! Mesa is my dream amp. I already have a Hughes and Kettner so the Mesa is next on my list. You're living my dream :-D
I was in audio Nirvana when I heard what sounded like the blue angel again.
Bravo sir!
Killer gear management!
Long live the Dual Recto!
Did I mention that the sound was to die for?
Stellar tones!
yep nothing like a true and trusted tube beast
the clean sound is really nice too!
I love Mesa Boogie. I can’t ever get rid of my Express 5 : 25. It defines my tone. 12 years and going strong.
Congrats, 500K!
Congratulations on 500k. Love your channel.🎸🤘
Love your taste in gear, I must say!
Very nice Darrell.
Fantastic tones with that thang!
Greatest line of amps ever made IMO - I use my Triple Rectifier to practice everyday! Nothing else has tone anywhere close to it.
Mark iv? Evh? Engl savage? Other than that, no, nothing intrigues me like a dual rec. For a super low budget option though, the peavey jsx is insane.
One of my fav Mesa Boogie sounds is the song The Bends, that distortion is perfect.
Wow I’m more impressed with the clean and vintage tones than the super overdrive section of that amp!!! Love it!
I am sooooo jealous. Awesome stuff. By the way I checked out your album over the weekend I totally dig it.
Very cool! I have had a Dual Rec for a long time. Most people would not know based on it’s use on heavy recordings, but it is hands down the most versatile amp I own. Drop the wattage, switch it to the tube rectified setting and the blues guys take note pretty fast. These things are anything but a one trick pony and kind of a great deal factoring everything in. Enjoy your new amp!!
I do chuggy chug with mine.
Great video (as usual) and.. congrats on making 500k!! :)
_The Dual Rectifier is so good man! Used in countless recording! Great demo!_
Thanks man!
Congratulations on half a million subscribers sir Durrell.
Awesome tone !!!! Love it !!!
These are some of the best non metal tones i have heard from this amp,,very impressive.
From what i can hear this amp doesnt messa round
That's a puntastic joke.
My favorite amplifier 🤘
Thought I would get with the times about 8 years back and sold my Mesa and my Marshall in favor of an amp modeling rig. I found that I just didn’t enjoy playing that much anymore running through a bunch of computer gear. Finally re-purchased a Mesa 4x12 and Dual Ractifier (rackmount recto) and will never sell them again.
Still pining for my JMP-1, though. Running the rectifier and Marshall stereo through the boogie cab was my favorite sound ever.
Darrell, I disagree with your video description calling it a "one trick pony." (And I think your video proves it. 😉)
I think this amp gets an undeserved reputation for it. It does not get the credit it really deserves for how versatile it can be. Three channels, with 8 voicing options (clean and pushed on ch. 1, and Raw, Vintage, and Modern on channels 2 and 3. You get great cleans, crushing tones and so much in between. A Les Paul on the orange channel set to vintage is pure rock-n-roll. I will say the EQ takes a little getting used to and the presence knob is pretty powerful. They take some time to get dialed in if you're not overly familiar with them. But once you do, they are magic. Especially with the right cabinet. I'm glad to see it on the channel and am looking forward to you getting more familiar with it over time.
P.S. The Dual Rec goes with a Tube Screamer like peanut butter and chocolate...
I had three mesa's. I think it gets labeled a one trick pony because people seem to want Fender Deluxe clean, Marshall JCM gain, and Mesa Rectifier in one cab. Does the Marshall and the Rectifier but not the Deluxe clean sound. In fact, it sounds sterile on the clean channel. I solved that problem by switching to playing bass.
@@paulorr7471 you can solve any "sterile" clean channel by cutting a few low mids and boosting high ones with an EQ in the effects loop, and adding treble to taste. however playing bass is also a very good option
Nice! I picked up two off the used market here in Victoria BC in the last few months. I found an old '90s Dual Rectifier Trem-o-Verb and a newer multi-watt head. They sounds quite different from each other, but I love them both. I used to be into use solid-state amps, then tried the modelling thing, but then I picked up a 15W tube head and remembered why I love tubes heads. A few months ago I got Two Notes Captor X and it's basically changed everything. I can run a 100W beast like this in my downtown single bedroom apartment with no issues. Heck, late at night I can even unhook the cab and play into headphones or record silently.
The rec and grandmeister are both on my wishlist! Excellent trade!
Yeeeaaaahh!!! Everyone should have one Mesa in their houses haha, congrats bro!
You did great man! That Mesa is is awesome!
Darrell omg 500 k !!!! Good stuff man cheers
Welcome back to old school buddy !! I'm about your age so seems like our generation is the same more or less :) and CONGRATSSSSS for your guitar production, It's gorgeous, hope all goes well. Best of luck :)
The Mesa DR just sitting there watching the guitar like "no, I play you"
I always used valve amps and FX pedals, but sold all my gear and bought a Kemper because of the reviews and the free lifetime updates. The thing just gets better and better. It plugs into a PA, a monitor, a cab, a PC, and it has all the classic effects (stereo and mono) already built-in. You can put all your profiles and settings onto a USB stick, then you can plug it into anther Kemper, in a studio for instance, and voilà, you're away! Kemper has just released a floor based stage version, which is an all-in-one amp and remote pedal, and the Kemper KABINET and a KONE are coming out sometime in Q1. I've now got amps I could only dream about in the past: Dumble, VOX, Fender, Marshall, Mesa/Boogie, Hughs & Ketner, Hiwatt (Dave Gilmour), Trainwreck, Matchless, Two-Rock, Evil Robot, Peavey, Bogner, Soldano, Orange, Roland, Blackstar, Cornell, Engl, Fuchs, Chandler, Friedman, and the list goes on! I can change amps mid-song, the morphing feature is fantastic, and the new crystal delays and reverbs are brilliant. I would never go back to lugging a heavy valve amp about, the Kemper is more reliable and can do much more than a single valve amp.
Great video!
that's a nice killer amp and great trade!
Rock on with that Dual Rectumfrier and congrats Darrell on 500K subscribers! :)
Dude, that guitar looks incredible!
You're a madman..........I love it.
I did a show with Drowning Pool and they brought in 3 double stacked triple rectifiers mesas... HOLY!!!! That was the most intense stage volume I've experienced... Sound check in a relatively small empty arena was awesome! Such a brutal amp. I hope you get to scare your neighbors with your dual.
Sounds great, always wanted a mesa
Congrats on the half mil sub mark !
6:02 love the Toto riff! Luke is amazing.
Mesa cleans are way underrated!
Sounds great - more versatility than I'd have expected - and I like the vaguely industrial look of the metal panel. Frankly, I also like the look of the knobs, even if settings are hard to read. My guess, and it's only that, is that I could sell ALL my guitars and still come up quite a bit short of the Mesa's price (I don't have a HELIX to trade - can't afford a HELIX, either).
Buy a used one :P
Used ones aren't that expensive
Mesa Boogie sound fantastic
Hello, Darrell!
Your channel is the best, man! Thank you so much for so many great videos and for the opportunity to get to know how lots and lots of fantistic gear sounds.
I have an ENGL 530e that I think you should try someday. You would be surprised.
By the way I was in shock when I heard how awesome you are with the accoustic guitar. Congrats, man!
That is one sweet sounding amp!
Its A Mesa,Enough said.
Great looking guitar as well,My bad BEAUTIFUL GUITAR
Happy to see you with yet another nice piece of equipment. But that guitar sweeeet.
Interesting, thanks. I use the H&K Dx40 and love it.
Gift of Fate!! Great!!!
Hi Darrell, Congratulations on Half a Million Subscribers, so well Deserved, you manage to Cover such a lot of Brilliant Topics👍👍👍.
what a Magnificent Amp, Mesa Dual Rec, Just Beautiful, people are often surprised how Warm the Clean Channel is, I have its Little Brother, the Mesa Mini Rec, even though the Mini has 2 El84's as the main Power Stage, still has the Pentode Gain Stage, Mesa were able to capture the Dual Rec Character in a small Head, the Cleans are so sweet and Warm, it does everything I want and more!
One of the features of the Huges and Ketner I was really impressed with was the Dual Power Soaks. A very Clever Amp design!
Take care Brother ♥️👍.
Melbourne, Australia.
i just got a dual rectum fryer a few weeks ago, love it!
Had a dual rec. Sold it only because I no longer had a need for it. WONDERFUL amp! Darrell, if you want to skip the attenuator, you can pull out 2 of the power tubes (don't remember if it's the inner 2 or outer ones) and one rectifier tube (either one) and it steps it down to a 50 watt amp. Especially useful live if you have a weakening power tube and "the show must go on". Only about 6db quieter though.
I love my Mesa Boogie Roadking! And coupled with my TwoNotes Captor I can either get -20db attenuation for the bedroom or use the DI/Line Out to my audio interface for silent recording.
How well does the attenuator work?
I think Darrell wanted to tell us "Old is gold" 😂
From Leo: That amp is a blast from the past, serious loud. I have an amp with knobs like that. I bought some pin stripping tape from the auto parts store and carefully made lines on the face of the knob. I can see settings at a glance and the tape has been in place for a couple of years.
Welcome to the club! I have an original 2 channel Dual Rec from '92 and a 150 watt Ttiple Rectifier from around 2002 or so. Do yourself a favor. If you don't already have a TS-9 Tube Screamer (which you SHOULD), get one and put that in front of the amp when you do high-gain stuff. It will tighten up and focus the bottom end a bit. Enjoy it. Take some time with the EQ. There is a definite learning curve to get the Rectos dialed in right. Have a good one!
GREAT TUBE AMP!
My brother got one of these for his birthday a few years back, and he really doesn't play much guitar as of late. I've played on it once or twice and loved every minute of it, but it was his amp. Since he doesn't play much anymore, and I currently use a cheap chinese stereo as an amp but recently decided I wanted to invest in a full stack. Definitely thinking about buying this off him, especially after this video.
Nice! 👍🤘
i agree with the PA approach fpr any scale of performance. complete control of all aspects of the sound presentation.
Also, everyone hears about the same thing, there’s not a kill zone directly in front of the guitar amp, lol.
The Dual is one of the most versatile amps period! Still killer
Always good have a real nice amp
