Rescuing orphan baby elephant Olorien | Sheldrick Trust

- In early June 2020, Masai herdsmen reported a lone calf that was trying to follow their grazing cattle. Rangers from Elephant Aware also spotted the young elephant in the Siana area of the Masai Mara, and reported her presence to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). The decision was made to wait and see if she would be absorbed back into a herd. However, several days passed and while a number of herds came and went, she was left behind despite her plaintive cries.
By Saturday 6th of June, she was still on her own and rapidly losing condition. This video tells the story of her rescue and arrival into the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, where she joined other orphaned elephants being afforded a second chance.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

I just love how new orphans are surrounded by the other orphans and are immediately treated with such affection, it warms the heart to see this, even though the realization that they should all be with their mothers never leaves. I try not to focus on that, bc it’s fruitless, but that knowledge never leaves me. I’m so glad the Sheldrick Trust is there, ready and willing to give so much love and sustenance to these orphan babies!
I think you can‘t thank SWT enough for what they do, wish I could support them more but I tell people do watch and support whenever you can. Haven‘t been much on their site but think of them each and every day and sometimes it makes me so sad I am not able to watch it. Elephants are such kind and loving creatures. It is very sad she lost her mother. However, she has gained a herd of loving aunties and uncles. Plus some amazing human foster parents. Thank you for rescuing her and for the years of support ahead.
I always have to watch these twice. Once to read the captions and then again to make sure I didn't miss any of the beautiful footage. Welcome sweet girl! We may not know how you came to be an orphan, but we can tell you you're going to be okay now, these are the good guys, these heroes in green. 💜🐘
lol....Exactly! I am re watching all the rescues ...so heart breaking but also so heart warming! They ALL will have a safe future within strong herds and will be protected in beautiful parks bought especially for them! Since I came across them I adopted 2 elephants already and three of my friends are adopting as we speak...:-)))))...just spreading the word helps!....

You know this breaks my heart. Ellies are so socially structured and bonded. To see a little one lost/ hurt/ or wout mom is devastating news. Poaching kills and the baby remembers all its life. Left alone. This is why this foundation rocks!!! The jeepers are amazing to attend to them. The ellies have hope. And you definitely see it in there eyes. Super stoked to see them thrive. The funds are used where most needed, as they should be, so each elephant has what they need to live happily in good health.

Ziwadi was my first ale to adopt. Sheldrick waited for awhile before up for adoption. I fell in love immediately esp since I was admin of sp needs students. I watch and rewatch and sob. The keepers are angels, I love them for caring for the elephants and to Daphne for knowing --tears of JOY. xoxo

That was a beautiful story. I don’t know what Olorien told the elephants in her language, but I’ve never seen the other elephants love on a new arrival as they did her. She must have been with a herd that had a hard time hence her independence at such a young age and distance from keepers initially except for her milk.

Dammit i always end up with tears in my eyes watching these rescue videos! 2:38 I love how all of the elephants shower the new orphan with much needed love.. Its always so heartwarming watching these orphan baby elephant rescues; from them coming in scared, lonely and in poor condition to them slowly learning to open up and enjoying their life again with their new family.🐘😍🥰
