Speaking of Boomers, here is something ancient you might appreciate. If you're not familiar with Studio Sokodei, they were a group who did some fandub parodies in the early 2000s, notably Evangelion Re:Death. There's also a Escaflowne parody called Nescaflowne but their little known Cowboy Bebop dub, Fanboy Bebop, is, personally for me, their most interesting work. It's about a group of jaded anime fans traveling to AX, and gives a glimpse of an era where the Toonami oldheads of today were the annoying newbies and enthusiasts questioned the direction their hobby was headed in the US market, among other tidbits of contemporary fan culture, rivalries and elitism. Fascinating piece of history.
CZcams is finicky with links in comments but you can find a backup on Archive.
I love that a twist of parasite dolls is that the megacorp is trying to fix a problem for once.
So glad to see this franchise get a retrospective. The only addition I’d like to see is a sequel to 2040. It was my entry into the BGC, and I’d like to have some canon-ish answers to the practically mystical end it has.
I went to Ikkicon. "Ikkicon" sounds like when you have bubblegum crisis. "THERE'S GUM EVERYWHERE!"
AD Police in particular provokes a strong memory in me: around about the time the live-action Street Fighter movie was new in cinemas, they rode on the name by publishing a Street Fighter comic alongside it. It wasn't actually a movie tie-in though, it was a flipped and colourised version of the Japanese "Ryu" manga based on the actual game's storyline, cut up to fit the standard floppy format (this was probably the first manga I ever read). On the back cover of one issue Manga Entertainment (the pioneer of anime licensing in the UK, notorious for their "cartoons ain't just for kids!" grindhouse marketing distributing lots of schlocky OVAs full of sex and gore and gratuitous swearing in the dubs) had an advert for their releases of AD Police and Genocyber, showing covers of the video cases. The AD Police one was an image of a screaming naked woman with lots of wires and other sci-fi gubbins stuck over her head (it's the same one that's on the Wikipedia article for the AD Police OVA). Now, on the VHS box itself, the "AD Police" title is pasted over the woman so you can't see any actual nudity - on the advert, however, it was the original unedited image and the copy editors had clearly missed the mix-up, as you had a sexy lady baring all on the back cover of a comic that was being sold next to the Beano and Sonic the Comic! And so impressionable eight year-old me had his first premature exposure to Animu Tiddies. Oops!
absolutely love bubblegum crisis 2040, you've convinced me to rewatch 2040, then do all the OVAS. i love this video
Love these retrospectives on more niche anime series, brings back memories of first watching these on AS when I was wee baby and had no idea what was going on.
This is some of the best content I've seen on YT. Over 2 hours long yet somehow feels concise and very snappy. Not to mention oftentimes hilarious. Great job CC.
you aren't beating the video essayist allegations lol
So love Bubblegum Crisis 2040. I thought it was forgotten by most anime fans and it indeed has become a niche but im so glad its being recognized and celebrated but this video. Thank you!
i truly love classic 80s anime. especially this show.
One of the first anime that I ever watched. The soundtrack still makes awesome driving music.
I have fond memories of the original Bubblegum Crisis when I was a kid. Although I don't think I ever finished it. I think it Bubblegum crisis would make a good idea live action movie. The suit's design is still great to this day.
Great retrospective! rented and binged the entire 2040 series from my local video store back in the day, been a fan ever since.
I knew about bubblegum crisis specifically the ova original crash and especially 2040, but never the other side material though I am glad I never did. It just feels like every single time they try to do anything with this franchise nothing seems to follow through whether it was the original series, Crash feeling like an absolute mess, The original AD police OVA needing more content, 2040 never getting a sequel and TV Police not feeling like BGC. Heck parasite dolls just feels like a different thing entirely that they just slapped on the bubble gum crisis reference sheet just to make people sure it's okay guys this is related to the original series even though it looks different and has none of the night sabers. Though I will say at least 2040 is the most complete out of all of the series even though it still blows that we will never get a sequel. Another amazing retrospective and man Priss will always be best girl no matter what timeline and major props to 2040 Priss's Eng VA for being that dedicated to being Priss that much!
I'd say if you liked the original BGC OVA the AD Police Files OVA is probably worth your time, especially if you like Leon as a character. Each "file" is an individual self contained short story arc that really stands on it's own so I wouldn't be too put off by any idea of a season arc being left unresolved.
"The military has something of an industrial complex". Oh that was golden! Oh, a Silent Möbius x Bubble Gum Crisis shared universe would have been amazing.
I remember seeing the vhs at my library as a kid and wondering "the world ran out of bubble gum? anime is so weird."
I love it how in-between you give some info on the studios, what went down in the background and "lore" regarding everything around it.
Also, the jokes are as bomb as ever.
Artmic and Suzuki had the idea of fleshing out the backstory in supplementary material the majority of which unfortunately was never released to the West. We have some materials like the music video that shows how Sylia recruited the girls, but the art books with huge amounts of background information remain untranslated.
I came to the series through the 2040 dub, but never really dug any deeper into it. This was a really fascinating in depth retrospective.
This is amazing. Thanks so much for making this.
Haven't had the pleasure to watch the original Bubble Gum Crisis, need to fix that. However the first couple of volumes of 2040 were the first VHS I ever got to buy myself. Before that it was recordings from Sci-Fi, borrowed copies and all that. Living in Wyoming you didn't see ANY of this stuff until late 90s and 2000s. I've always enjoyed 2040, solid show!
The way I sum up the OVA and TV Series is that of you want excellent action and music, OG Bubblegum Crisis is for you. If you come for the story and characters, Bubblegum Crisis 2040 is more up your alley.
I appreciate the hook up on some 80s anime goodness. Cheers mate
Finally, good content. Both on stuff I love and actually funny to boot.
I can listen to you talking about old anime for ever
Also awesome editing!
The narrative of "OVAs were mostly 'cash grabs' or cheap manga adaptations and then Artmic came and made MZ23" doesn't really hold up, most of the market in 84 after Dallos was hentai and there were around 10 non hentai ones before MZ23 released in March 85, most of which came out just a month or two earlier. So not really much out there to generalize about yet. Radio City Fantasy was a pretty inspired experimental piece, Birth was a messy production but full of amazing Kanada school animation still unmatched in a lot of ways, Greed was Bebow students making their own proof of ability, Leda and Area 88 were high quality works at the levels of MZ23, Leda being the second highest seller behind MZ23, and Nora was a lame manga adaptation. Then it's just a couple summaries or bonus content tapes for popular TV series by larger studios that were fine quality wise. The big push for lots of cheaply made OVAs by the industry, many of which being incomplete manga adaptions, comes moreso after 1988 when they realized that a minority rental OVAS with low production costs like Wounded Man actually did better than the big lavish projects they were focusing on, like Hirano's mecha OVAS, and that the Patlabor OVA was a huge hit even on a TV budget. Nice video!
A retrospective of Bubblegum Crisis ?! Thank you sir.
Whhoooooooaaaa! You're spoiling us with the content CC!
I paused your video 40 minutes in to watch all of AD Police before coming back (I bought it on DVD for $4 a while ago). Then I realised that there was a difference between AD Police Files and AD Police TV. As someone who gave up on 2040 and preferred the original, I bought the wrong one. But now that I watch your video, I’ll give 2040 another try.
But Hans’s voice actor is really good in the dub.
My boys not holding back on the jokes lol "💣 wedding", "...like all women" 😂
"Not Night City getting Nagasaki'd."
There are layers to that statement lol
Excellent video, I scored the vhs series of BGC back when madman Australia started up then got the DVD series again when they released that through jb hi fi. I steered clear of Crash as I'd heard bad things about it. Also Hurricane was a rip of a French song...there's videos out on it if your interested. Again nice work!
Damn, you could see the drop in budget from crisis to crash in about 2 seconds of animation / art quality
Discovered the channel this week. Great content so far ✌️
Honestly after this, I would love a Dirty Pair retrospective since I usually tend to associate Bubblegum Crisis with that franchise.
New subscriber based on this vid. Awesome work, it's great to see this classic done justice.
Absolutely amazing video! Honestly found out about BC2040 thanks to a adv films ad on a DVD i had! Never got around to watching AD, but I did watch BC2040 years ago and loved it. Watched the OG series later on and loved that too. Actually had no idea Parasite Dolls had anything to do with ADP/BC lol so thanks for that. Will definitely give it a watch at some point....was really curious about the Angel lady because she looked hot...shame about that though. (Also had no idea AIC was involved with Blue Gender! Loved it also the english opening to Blue Gender was a absolute bop! I already figured it was the case with Solty Rei considering how similar the Proceed member suits look like the Night Sabers!)
Great video as always! I've always been interested in watching bubblegum crisis but just never got around to it. Also you come back with a two hour long video!?!?! I'll finish this soon
22:15 - Yes. The moment it became 'Blade Runner meets Buffy'. Seriously, it should have conquered all after that.
These gems should never be forgotten!
As a fan of bubblegum crisis. This is a well done look at this bubblegum verse. Thank you
I enjoyed the original series long ago. Don't remember whether or not I actually saw Parasite Dolls, but I didn't give 2040 a chance. The story for that series, however, sounds interesting, so I might dip into it when I have time! Thanks for this nice retrospective!
These retrospectives are good
32:47 Lol, Suzuki might've been on to something there.
I want more BGC. I want more AD Police Files. I want more BGC 2040. I want more Parasite Dolls. I wouldn't object to more AD Police but it's just okay. I don't need more Crash. But at worst (Crash) I liked this franchise. And at its best (everything else), I loved it! Moar pls!
Great srries
I want to see you do a retrospective like this on Patlabor
First taste of BGC2040 was late Saturday night Anime block on skinamx, one of my first true taste of anime. Its opening song was the 1st track of my first mix cd after getting a discman. Watching it and the original BGC these days and its closer to mid overall but still holds a nostalgic ping... one I will still revisit every few years. Thank you for this retrospective.
Never knew Parasite Dolls was part of the BGC world... the impression I had of it was that of a GiTS ripoff wannabe riding off of Stand Alone Complex hype. The Boxart had the unnerving feel of The Major close up (like in Ghost in the Shell), the art style, synopsis, and setting didn't stand out as anything but a cyberpunk-ish more modern dingy dark detective thing but maybe closer to I.Robot (Will Smith one) making out a half thought question of 'what is human'. Needless to say.. I passed on that OVA and don't feel like I missed much on that part of the BGC world.
From your video library I can tell you have great taste
This dudes voice is like a ice cold drink on a humid summer day
58:14 And they still do to this day.
loved bgc since the 90's , i was shocked when i started watching parasite dolls and realized it was a bgc spinoff
Thank you for your service
Glad someone is talking about this, this is like the first anime I ever recall watching when I was like 7 or something. I'm literally turning 32 next month.
This was great! This is one of the few retrospectives that really talks about the WHOLE franchise. Most folks will know about the 80's one and it's generally the music that grabs um, then the action set pieces, the story is fluff really, the origin of the Knight Sabers is told in a music video, not an episode, a music video. The closest to a deep story is epsodes 5-6. The prequels are fun asides, Crash is fun as a contextual peice IF you are a fan that knows the history, it's kinda bland otherwise. Now 2040 was all story, I caught it originally on a run on ENCORE: ACTION back in like 2000, so I got the dub first (now I do prefer the Japanese VA as a singer but, Christine is a great Priss otherwise) which is still one of my favorites, I caught it at the last half and had NO clue what was going on, luckily they were doing a marathon that weekend so got to binge it, then they did another run, they also ran some other shows, Vandred, Vampire Hunter D, I can't recall all of them but enjoyed the variety, but this was a golden age of anime on cable, Sci-Fi Channel was still doing Saturday Anime, Toonami was in it's prime, ah memories. I tracked it down around 2003 on DVD and it is the one I credit with starting my collection, I bought the entire OVA, Crash, AD Police Files, and even AD Police TV after. I still need to get Parasite Dolls, I missed it at the time and have only watched it once. Your take makes me wanna find it and give it a look, as an obvious Hardcore Fan here what I did see in ADV's previews I have now on the DVDs I own, didn't excite me, and 2040 is my personal favorite. Again this was a great video retrospective and hey I'm subbed now.
Damn 😮 i know this take forever. I liked BC 2040 the most. Then the og ova series. But the og AD police was looking really great. Oh man, i had no idea it went that hard. I never heard about the last two show.
TV Police feels like an entirely different series from BGC if you take out the mention of Boomers.
1:07:45 Oh My God, An Eva Reference
At 2:28 that scene is so brutal I gotta know where it's from. Also, Pris will always be peak and I haven't even watched the show yet.
@@CulturedCrusader i greatly appreciate it my cultured brother.
@@CulturedCrusader do you know that scene at 2:33 is from which anime?
Just found your channel, subbing
I've only watched 2040 and like it always pissed me off that it just ended on that cliff hanger. I'm kind of excited to learn that there is more to the franchise, granted not exactly the same. PS Loved the video man!
I loved 2040. I also had no idea that Techno Police and Moon Station Dallos (among the first anime I ever watched as a kid) were predecessors to BGC!
man...adv did some cool stuuf back in the day didnt they?
if i recall right everyone went apeshit for the adv evangelion dvds back in the day
crazy to think its been that long
i love TV police, even though it isn't really bubblegum crisis. it has a very strong atmosphere and the bar episode is my favorite like you said.
i have the soundtrack cd's too, if you want flacs.
you should have a look at shows that were inspired by bubblegum crisis, masami obari made virus buster serge(sentai+evangelion+bgc), this has a very similar ending to 2040 despite coming a year before, and a character like sylia who has to fight their evil clone. koichi ohata made burst angel(literally starts with the combining boomer). those are what i know of.
Good shit
Love BGC, soundtrack is awrsome. The Dark Horse comic is not bad
Watch the recent Scott Pilgrim show. Ep 6 (i think) and watch ots credits.
Got 2040 on the shelf, unwatched
AD Police didnt do it for me or Parasite Dolls.
Lets be honest, Bubble gum crisis is just anime Bladerunner. with the deeper themes buried in flash lights.
Nope, it's a cross Between Terminator and Blade Runner, with a huge helping of "Streets of Fire" thrown in. BGC is probably the most extreme case of an anime becoming popular in the USA, because it's a weird mirror of American pop culture.
BTW, good video, but no mention of Streets of Fire? Also "Black Lagoon's" "Greenback Jane" arc is a loose homage to original series episode 8 (that most Sonada of all BGC episodes).
AND the fan-title of the 2 episode arc "Killer Lesbian Vampire Robots from Outer Space?"
What ever happened to Kenichi Sonoda????
He's running a store that's been in his family for generations. He's not that involved in anime anymore, although he is very open to returning to Gunsmith Cats and Bubblegum Crisis if AIC Rights ever asks him to come back.
Nice
I always assumed that the bonkers space lady ending of 2040 was a direct response to Evangelion, specificly EoE which came out the year before it.
Probably. There are several scenes in 2040 that look and feel a little too close to eva.
"Knight Sabers, sanjo!"
Bgc is the coolest anime story ever. Easily my #1
there was supposed to be a live action movie it got caught in production hell
Holy shit thank you for the long one man.... The video I mean
Kino content. How about covering genocyber next? It's pretty much a thematic continuation of ad police in being edgy schlock but even more insane on the violent part.
Last episode is beyond crazy and jumps the shark completely.
I actually talked about it already on my latest OVA Odyssey video. Didn't go as in depth with it like this one (obviously) but ya I liked it just as much as AD Police. I do think AD Police had better writing, but Genocyber was wild and highly entertaining for what it was.
@@CulturedCrusader Gonna give that a watch, came here from the blood video so I've not seen your backlog yet. Keep up the great content.
1:59:19 that sounds great 👍🏾 as long as it has a similar vibe as the others... I would like it
I grew up with things like Speed Racer and Casshan. Into Battle of the Planets, Voltron...
When Bubblegum Crisis popped. It became my favorite anime of all time.
To this day it still is.
Now I've always been a fan of cyberpunk and Streets of Fire, so BGC struck every note for me.
A big draw was also the music. Ive been in dozen of garage bands, played half a dozen different instruments poor health at my age makes it difficult to do much).
Were r are there better stories, characters, animation, art? Objectively...sure.
But BGC is like jambalaya. Their are superior dishes you could make for all the individual ingredients...
Mixed together though you get a spicy, unique, tasty, filling and fun dish that"ll keep you popping for the next 80 years.
in the late 90s we we had such a good amount of BGC and that was great times. all we did was draw pris and the gang around that time : D
Given the state of modern reboots I feel like I'd rather the series stay dead.
A Bubblegum Crisis Reboot would be perfect as a ONA, even on a streaming site as annoying as Netflix. Maybe one day it could happen.
Gonna talk about Bubblegum Crisis and not talk about Genocyber and how that's related development wise?
Wow that was just the first 3 episodes wow that’s a lot
Episode 7 is the most important episode because it features HOUSTON
Gen X here that discovered 2040 first... in the late 1990s while going to university. After that, I watched the others older stuff. This is an awesome breakdown of the Bubblegum universe. The 2040 dub is awesome for the time. Most dubs before the 2000s are terrible. You didn't touch on the 2040 episode names of being song names. Looking forward to the "Blue seed" universe review.
41:34 Somehow, Largo returned ; again.
I had it in my notes to make a Palpatine reference there but this video has too much star wars as is
Never even heard of this, probably impossible to view anywhere now.
I dig it. Are there any videos you recommend recapping Andriod Kikaider?
Funny you mention the Cyberpunk franchise as the excellent licensed Bubblegum Crisis pen-and-paper RPG game was published by the same company that did the Cyberpunk 2020 RPG.
Six hundred and fifty one freaking cracker barrels. Those SSI checks sure are something huh.
Fuck, I didn't know this iceberg went so deep, all I ever knew was BG 2040 and Parasite Dolls. I've got a lot more stuff to search out and watch now! Thanks, Crusader!
gotta admit tho, the directors sentiment about Corporations taking over is kind of true. Mega corps basically have tons of political pull and influences in world n geopolitical issues. Like Oil and Gas corps and alot of the tech companies
I'm back and longer than ever
Lets go!!🎉
Just finished lawn care for the day. Time to put this on as I take a shower. Life works in magical ways.
The next one needs to be longer go more in-depth
Our Soldier of God is back !
Really nice writing.. Funny. 👊
