    Awesome demonstration of Atrac. So many people don’t utilize this. So many instances all you need is atrac over the locker. For extreme stuff Atrac and the locker both on will make your 4Runner unstoppable but Atrac always works for me 90 percent of the time.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před 2 lety

      Atrac is very capable, especially if you know how to use it. The newer versions are much more aggressive and dummy proof, the older ones needed some finesse to work. Either way, Toyota should pair Atrac with Torsen style limited slip differentials. Even a basic one with a 2:1 bias ratio would half the braking force required, making the system way more efficient. This isn't just a Toyota thing, just about every manufacturer could benefit from this.

    • @firebir11
      @firebir11 Před rokem

      @@EngineAdventures your right about using Torsen with traction control. The subject came up in the jeep post and the conclusion was the same…it would save on brakes during traction control use.

    I gave you compliments several times in the past on your channel for its content and the editing. You do one heck of a job. Your videos show exactly what I want to see. The views from different angles is great, it shows the jumps, the compression of the suspension and how it articulates. Your channel is one of my favorite channels for off -roading and it helped me to narrow down my truck choices a couple of times.

    Nice review I just picked one up just like that one same color and have my rocksliders ordered and when the tires wear out most likely up one tire size to like a 275x70 17R really don’t want to destroy MPG with 285x70 17R. For Me it will be a hunting truck.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před 2 lety +2

      Thanks for watching! You could go with a 255/75R17 or 255/80r17. That way you get the height without a ton of extra weight. Shouldn't hurt fuel mileage too much.

    • @sha6mm
      @sha6mm Před 2 lety +3

      @@EngineAdventures
      Yes I’m think 255x75 17R that way I don’t have to modify anything and tire weight stay close to the same. That makes tire 32.1 vs 31.6 inch so you gain .3 inch but that gets ground clearance close to 10 inches

    The jeep wrangler Rubicon has a four to one ratio transfer case and a 410 rear end, The 4Runner has a 257 to 1 transfer case and a 3.73 rear end. Big difference.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před rokem

      Yes the JLUR has a much better crawl ratio than the 4-Runner, but this trail isn't that steep and the 4 runner by no means struggled with getting torque to the ground. The main issues I ran into with the 4-Runner were the smaller tires and lower clearance. On the other hand the 4-Runner was much smoother on the dirt roads leading to the trailhead than the JLUR. Both great at what they do!
      EDIT:
      Turns out we were wrong. All Wranglers and Gladiators equipped with the full time (4auto) option use the Selec-Trac 2.72:1 low range transfercase. I asked my Jeep contact about this because of other questions I was getting on another video.
      Just as an FYI in the Wrangler and Gladiator (still waiting for word on the Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer) when you shift to 4hi or 4lo the clutch pack in the transfercase is completely bypassed. No worries about slipping clutches in 4wd low like the Ram and GM 1500s do.

      The Rubicon I’m bored

    • @jimotten6206
      @jimotten6206 Před rokem

      If you get the Rubicon option not the Wrangler stock, but the Rubicon you get a 410 gear and a 41 transfer case ratio in low range and two lockers one front one rear. I go four wheeling with two Rubicon‘s. My 4Runner trail edition is a 2016, l lifted it 2 1/2 inches it helped out quite a bit, I put 33 on it, Gas mileage went from 20 miles a gallon down to 17 and they became real doggy, it needs to be re-geared now. You can really feel the heavier 33s and the higher rolling resistance.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před rokem

      @@jimotten6206 The Rubicon 4xe, as seen in this video, has the 4 auto position, meaning it only has a 2.72:1 low range. Yes most Rubicon's have the 4:1 low range, but not on the Rubicon 4xe.
      That's a big problem with normal sized vehicles. My XJ was regeared when I went to 32" tires. I'm more used to 3/4 and 1 ton trucks where you don't need to do much to add bigger tires. This XJ has been quite the experience in needing lots of stuff just to fit 32's.

    see if you can get your hands on a 4runner limited to test out the full time 4wd with just the XREAS suspension, maybe just a used one since they haven't changed much. We have a 2015 limited and are looking to take it off road. Great video

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting! I'll see what I can do, however you can get an idea of its low speed capability by comparing it to the test where I was in 4wd low with ATRAC on. I believe the limited locks the center diff in 4wd low and has ATRAC standard. For the high speed I have no idea how XREAS really performs.

    Personally, I like those sounds the system makes in CC and ATRAC. For some reason it makes me feel like I'm more connected to the truck; weird I know. I think it is because I can hear the intensity of how it is working and it helps me choose lines and steer. Also, I can't explain why enough that it would make sense, but I feel more secure with the Toyota than the Jeep off-road. Something in the back of my mind says if the Toyota breaks it will "work thru the pain" and get me off the trail, where the Jeep would say "nope you're just stuck here". I think we are too spoiled with cameras and tech.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před rokem

      My experience with Jeeps is that things break or stop working, but the Jeep keeps on going. I can't say much for the 4xe, because I haven't tested one for an extended amount of time. It is much more complex though, which can be detrimental.

  • @Ryan-yp7zb
    @Ryan-yp7zb Před 2 lety +1

    If it was your money, would you just get an SR5 with ATRAC or pay extra for the off-road for NF roads, deep dispersed camping, and not really rock-crawling-moab type of stuff?

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před 2 lety

      For the most part ATRAC will take care of you. I much prefer a rear locker in many environments, but there are times when ATRAC is even more precise than the locker. Often times the rear end will slide to one side or the other with the locker engaged. I just don't like computers a whole lot (despite knowing that they have helped me avoid accidents in the past).
      With the Tundra and Sequoia the TRD Off-road is a package, not a trim. I wish you could just get the rear locker by itself as an add on, but the TRD off-road package is still a good way to go.

    It feels like the 4Runner was well ahead of the curve for off road capabilities through ATRAC, rear locker, and incredible off road suspension.
    Hopefully the redesign keeps all the capabilities but enhances the tech features and gives better fuel economy. Otherwise they loose what has given the 4Runner such a strong following.

    • @ExpeditionaryRanger
      @ExpeditionaryRanger Před 2 lety

      And that it stills Japanese built. I feel like they will not live up to it's bullet proof reliability if they do anything but a naturally aspirated engine. Maybe a hybrid okay, but not turbo. It's nice to know that you can go 200000 mi plus with these without having to spend $5k plus on a battery though.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah, there really aren't many comparable vehicles. The Grand Cherokee is more luxury offroader and the Wrangler is more rock crawler. I'm excited for what the future holds on the 4Runner.
