  • Welcome back to the Fluctus Channel for a feature about the Viper of the Marine Corps. The AH-1Z Viper is the most lethal helicopter in the US Marine Corps. It evolved from the Vietnam War to the present day, where it joins hands with its utility counterpart, the UH-1Y Venom, to make the most formidable rotorcraft duo in any military.

    May have been mentioned, but the Viper and Venom are Marine aircraft. Army uses UH-60 Blackhawk and AH-64 Apache. Rule of thumb: if the aircraft is named after a Native American nation, it's Army. (The UH-1 "Huey" that transported my dad around Vietnam - Garryowen - was designated the Iriquois.)

      @1975KyleDavid Před 4 měsíci

      @mohhughes4870, the Cobra served in the US Army from 1967-1980, when it was supplanted by the Apache.

      You are of course correct - the only time a US Army aircraft has not been named affter a Native American nation. I think....

    the T700 is used on the Ah 64. UH 60s, AH 1s, UH 1s all for said cost reduction. also remember that the AH 64s and UH 60s are larger. thus you cant get as many Airframes on the LHDs LHAs and LPDs that are pretty much the Marine Carriers.

      I started playing around with that concept a few decades ago just looking at a hair dryer. I think it's a very versatile design that could be imbedded in a wing and ducting the airflow in different directions. That's what I was playing with just for an aircraft for a story.

    The Marines' AH-1Z Viper is much smaller, faster, more manuverable, and overall more versatile (in climate, portability, and maintenance) than even the best version of the Apache - as well as being able to carry as much ordnance in payload as a slicked-down AV8-B Harrier II. Let that sink in....a helicopter that carries the same weight in missiles, rockets, and 20mm ammo as an effn max-payload Harrier......

      @RobertL.JonesJr-hz8vl Před 4 měsíci

      Well when the Army used a Cobra it was a modified Huey and became the AH-1 Hueycobra, then when it was modified for the Marines with twin engines it was a AH-1J Seacobra updated to the AH-1T TOW Cobra, updated again to AH-1W Supercobra, and updated to the AH-1Z Viper. The Army started using the AH-64 Apache. The Marines are working on a version that will incorperate a tilt-rotor attack helicopter to replace the Viper though.
