This really made me feel badly for Henry, that quote, "he cost me much, but I wish he lived to cost me more," got me.
I had a similar reaction. Such sadness in all lives, no matter how great the wealth.
Me too
i gasped
Made me “feel bad.” Sorry, but every time I hear, for instance, Trump say “I feel badly” about something, I feel bad for his grammar teacher.
Great love doesn't come free...
Anyone else watching this for the second time because this narrator just pulls you right in. He is terrific!
This is my eighth....sorry. Medieval history fan.
4th time, check out dan jones series it's awesome
Watching because I am playing England in MTW2 stainless steel and the royal blood line is plantengnet
I've watched many times. I love it 💖
Dr. Bartlett has presented several well-received series. I think YT also has a few of his university lectures.
To think, there are people who think that history is uninteresting and boring. It blows my mind, because this real life Game of Thrones is absolutely fascinating and completely captivating. I love it! Not to mention, this doc is extremely well done. Just flawless storytelling of a enthralling story.
interesting
Right! This came up on autoplay, completely unrelated to what I was browsing, and was so fasicnating now I'm binging the whole series.
@Alpha Werks Lancaster and York, Lannister and Stark was something I definitely picked up on my first time reading a song of ice and fire, amongst many other similarities to real life or real places. GRRM said himself something along the lines of how he writes is he takes real history, then turns it up to an 11.
The Wars of the Roses seems to be given more play, but I find this period more fascinating.
Storytelling indeed.
From Kenya ......I am a great fan of English history. This series throws a lot of light on the Plantagenet era which has historically been overshadowed by the Tudors
Fan is only fan you don't experience it.

I agree and am very grateful to the BBC
So pleased to have found this! As much as I love being American, I am borderline obsessed with the history of England and have been since childhood. Thank you for sharing these with us!
Me too! I gobble up British historical fiction and bios. Elinor of Aquitaine is my favorite woman in history.

It's fascinating, isn't it? For many of us Americans--these are our ancestors.

Greed and brotherly hatred could say Cain and Able.
Sikhs was Hamlet with a happy ending!
Thought I was the only one to peep that.
During a respite in the fighting for Gisors, Richard and Phillip exchanged taunts. Phillip is said to have shouted at Richard, "I will take this castle, though the walls be made of iron." To which, Richard replied, "I will hold this castle, though the walls be made of butter."
They knew how to smack-talk back then.
I believed this exchange happened under the walls of Chateau Gaillard, but maybe I was wrong.
I'm watching this from Philippines. I have always been interested of English history, because I am studying history, English language and literature here! 💯☺️
Eleanor lasted till 80. Which in its self is a feat in that time!
I’ve read she was 83 when she died in 1203.
I've read 82.
Most didn’t make it to 40. Impressive I say. ( age is always a little wonky in these times because of records)
@@brandiebishop8473 well, there were great differences in maximum age dependent on which class one belonged to. Aristocracy usually lived a lot longer than the average peasant, for obvious reasons.
@@sandisteinberg1579 I believe you are correct.
Henry II and Eleanor are one of the most interesting couples in history. I’ve watched A Lion in Winter (a great movie) many times, but I don’t think it does them justice. Just an amazing story....
Eleanor of Aquitaine is possibly the most interesting woman of the Middle Ages. Many believe that she was the inspiration for many of the Holy Grail legends written in this period, and she certainly was one of the leading patrons of the minnesingers and artists of Occitan France and Castillian Spain. Sadly, it was her sons and not her daughters who would bear her legacy (though if you can find some histories of Eleanor and Alfonso of Castile, or even more intriguing Joan and Raymond of Toulouse, both are remarkable in their own right). If she had succeeded in convincing Richard to forego the Crusades and instead build the family's power base in Southern France, not only might the history of Western Europe look much different, but so might the history of the Catholic Church.
You might be interested in a BBC series from the '70s called The Devil's Crown, with Brian Cox playing Henry II. It's here on yt. Enjoy!
@@GildaLee27 Thanks. I'll be sure to look for it.

I have always admired Maude and Eleanor; they were strong and determined. Way ahead of their time. Maude fought for the throne that was rightfully hers and eventually won it for her son, with Henry's help. But the people paid the ultimate price.
They always do. The foot soldier fight for the lesser of 2 evils
This is a well-narrated and illustrated portrayal that refreshingly minimizes dramatization seen in so many other historical programs.
When they say that the Countess Andjou flew out of the window. ... its because they threw her out of the window
More idle misogyny. Same as always. And, Bender Is Great.
@Stephen Murphy the legend seems to indicate that she was being chased... i think she got cought

I got rid of TV years ago with all its reality crap! Only youtube now !!! Wonderful!
@Bobbi Cat Certainly, but do not be fooled by youtube either. It is owned by the same gangsters. They have now sensored just about everything on youtube. Total blackout has started. I feel the darkness has fallen at the same time of Julian Assange arrest, although it is a broader and longer process. Facebook also sensors, google too. I barely know a source of honest information people left in the entire world. Klagemauer is the last one maybe. globalresearch went along with the christrchurch fake it seems, so we lost them too. Luke Rudowsky is still going, but those are youngsters and not always watchable for me when they get childish, though Luke is ok I guess. This was fully to be expected. It will get a lot worse. Tyranny is afoot. If Assange is tortured, we are officially in a tyrranny. Word is he could be, no surprise with a gangster like Trump in power who says: torture works. Things are so much worse than people who watch TV and read papers think.
Omg, Reality tv is awesome! I don't know when you got rid of TV. But the shows and tv made films became 95% dull 😑 & unwatchable. Last year was THE worst. Finally there's some good stuff on like "What we do in the Shadows. A comedy spoof on Vampires. There was an awesome film too by the same name that the show was spawned off of. Best costumes, sets and actors. LOVE it! I recommend you check out the film. I rarely watch things twice & I've watched the film 5 times already!

Eleanor of Aquitaine, what an extraordinary woman!!! ❤️
Culpepper She outlived Henry
Indeed. Isabella of France was once called a she-wolf by Shakespeare. Check out her biography, jaw dropping stuff.
Agreed. I find it maddening that historians always villainize her for holding her ground and standing up to her usurper brother Stephen. Stephen is the villain here. Not Eleanor.
“The Lion in Winter “ yells their story of Henry and Eleanor .
@@sschaffner3812 Eleanor of Aquitaine’s brother was not Stephen of England. Please get your facts correct. Eleanor was a wife of Henry II, whose mother Empress Matilda was the first cousin of Stephen, both of whom were grandchildren of William the conqueror
