  • A great musician from La Paz playing on one of the great music shops there. Often in the evenings there will be a jam at one of the stores. This was a charango from off the wall that I had just purchased.
Agustin Alonso owns the store in downtown La Paz. He is the guy at end of clip. Well worth a visit if you are there.

I visited Don Agustin's shop back in 2016 or 17, when I was still living in La Paz. I had an accident and part of my creole guitar broke. He mas able to tell which wood it was only by touching the surface, totally mindblowing. I came back a week later. The guitar was not only looking like new, but it was sounding even better than before. I will never forget that experience.

What an awesome video!!! I love the charango, in fact I own one. My parents are Bolivian, they are also music teachers here in the US. I was born here in the US. I play Charango, Pamflute, Piano, Trumpet and I sing. I sing with my family and we sing and play Bolivian Instruments. If you want to know more message me. God Bless USA and Bolivia.

@Musician Vargas, My parents are also Bolivian, my sister & I were both born here in the US. I am jealous that you can play. I have always been in love with the sound of the charango. In one of my visits I just couldn't resist and bought myself one and still don't know how to play it. People here don't even know what it is. They see it and think it is a Ukulele.. any advice or sites that you may have come across where I can begin to learn.

I had to find something on the internet as to what kind of instrument a 'charango' is and what it sounds like, as for reason that I read that musician David Lindley allegedly has mastered and plays one in addition to about two dozen other stringed instruments.
I'm not only pleased that you posted this video, and thus making it a relatively easy search, but I'm also pretty doggone impressed with the sound of the instrument and the talent of the fellow playing it.

Okay dumb question but: are charangos chronic-pain friendly? I had to give up learning guitar ‘cause the one I bought off a friend to learn was WAY too big (and wasn’t designed for nylon strings to simply restring it)
I got to talking to a guy selling a uke at a fleamarket and he suggested that smaller instruments + nylon strings would be the friendliest option once my chronic pain is better managed.
