    Hiker tip:
    take an old pair of thick OTC (overthecalf) socks. Cut the feet off at the ankle & use the leg part as a sleeve. Undo the strapping belts on your shoulder straps. Put the socks on the straps, poke holes where the buckles are, put the belts back together
    ..now you have extra padding that also absorbs sweat (as a sock should do). But the coolest thing..
    Is that the sock rounds out the edges on the shoulder strap and gives you a soft material all the way around.
    Plus on the cold nights, you now have 2 extra leg or arm warmers👍🏼
    Now take the feet you cut off, stretch em out and do the same thing to the cummerbund hip pads and soften those bad boys up too & in a pinch they can be used as extra mittens to warm hands faster.
    I actually doubled up on these ‘sock sleeves’ and made em twice as thick.
    ..also there is usually a space behind the back pad part of the cummerbund that’s perfect to tuck in a beanie (or extra socks). This adds a bit more (dual purpose) padding to the back side of that belt area.

    I have the small backpack version not the ruck but the ideology behind the slim line ruck sack version is for when you are rucking and you have to go through a narrow spot if your body could fit through it your narrow ruck could fit through it instead of having to take off your ruck or fight/wiggle your way through that narrow passage. That is the thinking behind the narrower rucksack

    I found the MR issued bag made its money when sitting over the plates. Was only issued the mid sized one, but it’s not a bad bag. Long maneuvers loaded heavy over rugged terrain played well with the JPC and I didn’t really even need to clip much on - just rode nicely. Narrower profile in relation to the volume when packed out also lent itself to sitting higher off the ground if you need to drop the bag, which made it easier to put back on and get up when packed full.
    Awesome stuff, man! Keep it up!

    Mystery Ranch is absolutely badass, been using it waaaaaaay before the Army actually. They have their own Mountain Ruck in the military category for more real estate, kinda the same with Blackjack series.
    I may be defending MR or giving them much praise but it's just from previous experience with packs over the course of time. Including Tactical Tailor as well as Eberlestock. Either or, they're phenomenal and each to their own :)

    Great video!
    Ugh for reminding me of the Rollover technique. Also reminded me of the flying flip technique which works up to about 70 pounds.
    One of my major complaints about the Medium ALICE packs was the narrow opening. It was a pain to get things in and out of. By the time One put in a sleeping bag and a radio, there was barely room for anything else.
    Probably why the infamous butt bags were so popular.
    I acquired a large ALICE and it was much easier to use. The problem was that I was now everyone's friend for extra crap.
    Currently, I am using a 5.11 72 Hour pack. It's a medium duty pack. I have only tried up to 60 pounds in it.
    I mostly use it for going to seminars, travel and teaching classes because I can specifically station gear where I can find it.
    I have also used the 5.11 All Hazards Prime, iirc. It was decent for airline travel because it fit into the overhead bins but could hold decent weight.
    Swiss gear is hit/miss on light duty backpacks.
    5.11 covert is a decent day pack. Buckles need to be stronger. But I run about 30 pounds in them for my work kit and they hold up 3-4 years.

    One of the most frustrating things is being unable to acquire the frame only for a custom setup, I ended getting the good ol' Alice frame and its cargo shelf to carry some heavy stuff, that doesn't exactly translate to a huge volume.
    Also ended getting an USMC FILBE pack as a freebie... that thing is huuuge, JFC, it's almost comical.

  • @justsomeguy4033
    @justsomeguy4033 Před 2 lety

    ..also, from my understanding, the basic ‘narrow bag’ design was designed for weight distribution to balance weight over your shoulder height. This idea helps put weight onto your shoulders from the top rather than adding to the down-pull weight of the shoulder straps. A down pull that your body wants to naturally counter by leaning forward.
    Plus its meant to keep the hiker narrow, which helps us get through heavy brush, narrow crevices, narrow cliff paths, etc.
    Having a ‘high pack’ might make it impossible to wear a hat backwards, but when sitting (or even walking) it does give you a headrest to lay your head back on. It’s a headrest that’s always where you need it whenever you need it.
    The pack in this video is based on that design idea, but it doesn’t utilize the design the benefits, because it doesn’t even come up high enough. It’s a no frame design, but on a frame with no height.

    Military pack specs are wildly different from civilian pack specs. It is impossible to talk in military circles about packs and rucking without immediately hearing about weight. Obviously military missions require much more gear that adds a lot of weight, so this focus is valid. The indoctrinated love of the ALICE pack is strong.
    Civilian packs are focused on capacity, not weight. It’s really, really rare for civilian-focused pack makers talk about their gear in terms of how much weight it can hold. The narrow shaping and lack of dead space in the lower back is designed with center-of-gravity in mind, keeping the load close to the spine and the hips.
    But it is very interesting to hear the old “ounces equal pounds, pounds equal pain” from the same dudes hiking (outside the military) with 8” leather boots, combat pants, a rigger’s belt and 3 different knives.

    They may have decided on a slimmer design, because I know a few SF guys who wanted slimmer rucks for easier maneuverability in wooded, rocky, and even urban areas for a surity that if their body can fit (through a door or crevis), then their ruck can fit. Pulling from my own experience in the mountains, nothing is worse than trying to fit through somehwere and your pack can't follow you and it becomes a hassle to take off and try to get it to you. However, it is like you said. It is mission dependent, and sometimes you don't need to worry about that as much.

    Now, I do have to say that (and this could be camera angle, etc) it looks like the MR doesn't fit you properly. The angle on the load lifters should be closer to 45* (again, could be camera angle). Then again, I am looking at MR site and they demo the pack with the lifters very vertical like that. Hello, have you used Eberlstock military backpacks? They have many kinds of military backpacks, such as G4 and F4 and J79. I have been using Alice and Molle II large backpacks for several years and I like them very much, they are very simple. G4 and F4 have the same frame, while J79's frame is another two metal strips + plastic plate. I saw your video on CZcams. You introduced the backpack very professionally. I would like to ask if you have used Eberlestock military backpacks and can you give me your opinions. Thank you very much for your help😺👍

    Kind of a nerdy question but I’m a normal 11B and I find myself trying different rucks trying to close in on what the right size is for a 12 day patrol like ranger school. What is your opinion on how many cubic inches you feel you need for everything. I find myself if I have my tactical Tailor on I have enough space but put stuff in my pack to fill that space that I don’t actually need. And then on my normal Alice Large I find myself having just barely enough space.

    I don't have a ruck sack. The only ruck sack I have is one of those 1980s green Army bags with no padding, and a black backpack dressed up as a ruck sack that has such weak parts that everything just pulls apart and becomes loose if anything over 20 pounds is in it, giving me chaffing on my lower back whenever I run with it. I need to get one that sits on my back, not one that swipes it back and forth like it is looking through Tinder.

    Kifaru went out of favor for some reason but it is absolutely superior. The Duplex based frame from Kifaru is leaps and bounds better than the MR NICE frame you're using here. If you get a chance to try one out, DO NOT HESITATE!

    • @dcentral
      @dcentral Před 2 lety

      I believe Kifaru has a “tactical frame” which is a beefed up version of their hunting frame. And at some point Kifaru had a contract with Australian military where they created the Mountain Warrior/Tac Warrior packs like 5 years ago. But I haven’t heard or seen any specialized units use Kifaru, perhaps handful of guys ordered their own lacks? I think the main problem with Kifaru is that they’re a small company and don’t have the capacity to produce gear on scale that Mystery Ranch can.

    • @GeneralPreparedness1
      @GeneralPreparedness1 Před 2 lety
