    I tried my first oil pastel drawing the other day and can confirm that smooth paper wasn't the best choice. Blending was very awkward and layering was impossible. After testing the same pastel on more textured paper it gave a completely different result, almost like a different brand.
    I've also found that matt clear varnish is good for layering them, as well as fixating the final drawing. Given that oil pastel never dry. It also smooths out the crumbs out and makes the strokes looks more brush like.

    I am a beginner with oil pastel and I learned a lot from you since last March 2020. Thanks a lot for your advices and tips! Love your videos! Up to now, I am using with Cray-Pas juniors and Cray-Pas Expressionist oil pastels mainly, at the end I may use a bit of Sennelier for a smooth look and to pop up some skin tones areas. I am having great success with portraits on Fabriano Watercolour cold-press 100% cotton extra-white, 300lb with 640gsm (size 12X14/30X36cm). Futhermore I am using rubber colour shapers (Royal Sovereign Ltd-UK no:1 & 6) by cutting the edge as round blender tools. The artwork looks fabulous just like oil painting fine art. And I am using the polychromos colours and aquarellable Stabillo All pencils (black, yellow and red) for paper-glass-plastic-metal on the oil pastel in softly way for fine details of the portraits during the process by adding oil pastels layerings for modeling the features. For more details of my artworks with oil pastels, see my publications on Facebook for public. Eventually I will use the Liquitex /glossy medium varnish when my portraits will hard enough to preserve them from scratches. I don’t think that I should use epoxy resine on them due to the thin layers of oil pastels which it is more easier to harder on this watercolour cold press paper with this particular technic of using colour shapers as blender tools. Hope these tips may be helpful to every beginners and artists as well! Good luck :O) !!!

    I’ve been experimenting with lots of different paper lately and I’m loving Stonehenge Aqua coldpress for oil pastels. I’m using inexpensive and expensive oil pastels together. The inexpensive pastels look so nice on this paper. I add my more expensive pastels as finishing touch. Really beautiful results.

      @@SyndiaArt You’re so welcome! I’ve been having so much fun painting portraits with oil pastels. I don’t know what I’m doing but loving it 🤷🏻‍♀️. I’m a watercolor artist and I was gifted oil pastels years ago. I was excited to use them as little touches in watercolor paintings but I can’t stop playing and arting with them.
      Have you tried the Paul Rubens oil pastels? They have a standard set of 48 plus pastel color set and I think a metallic set. I got the pastel colors and I just love them. You are so right about using good paper.
      I saw the gallery soft pastels on Amazon warehouse for 18.89 and grabbed them today. I needed a basic set of colors.
      I’m kind of obsessed with oil pastels lately.😂 Using Sennelier pastels as a finishing touch really is icing on cake. So beautiful.

      I canceled my order for galley soft pastels 48 set and thinking that I may order the Paul Rubens set of 48 instead. There aren’t a lot of crumbs with Paul Rubens brand and I love working with creamy pastels. 💕

    You are perfectly right, Syndia about the Somerset paper with oil pastel which we buy it to Omer DeSerre everywhere in Québec. And according to my own experience, I love very much to work on watercolour thick board such 300gsm and 650gsm such as Fabriano Artistico, which can take a lot layers as we can use for blending any oil diluants for oil paintings, essence or térébenthine 🙃 I discovered more your paper is thicker more you can do layers in a confortable way 😇! Personally I find than any canvas papers for acrylic and oil paintings are very good as well as. Furthermore, you can use the other side in order of doing a lot of layerings also 😉!

    Hi Syndia. I was looking for a video for my sister who is going to start using the Mungyo that I am giving her. I am asking her to watch your videos since they are the best i have found. I am an experimenter and have bought too many oil pastel brands (Craypas, Pentel, Caran D'Ache, Mungyo, and now Sennilier)...so I am giving up my Mungyo set since my second best that I use is the Caran D'Ache. Mungyo are wonderful to use while I was learning...and love that you use them as well. Anyway, I found during my last few months, I really like Strathmore's 400 Series Heaveyweight drawing paper. I did some 14x17 still life oil pastel paintings in school using the paper and the finished products came out gorgeous...they are being shown in a gallery. I also have tried some Fluid 100% cotton water color paper and the oil pastels work well. Strathmore as you know, is easily found...Fluid paper can only be purchased online. Thank you for your wonderful review of paper...and all your wonderful videos. Very calming to watch and very easy to follow!

      Do you use a spray primer? Is it like a "workable fixative" or something different?

    • @patwessels2322
      @patwessels2322 Před 6 lety

      Pastel primer is applied to the surface before you start. It can be applied with a sponge brush or an ordinary paintbrush - I find a sponge brush is better because it doesn't leave brush marks which could show up especially if you are using soft pastels and not oil pastels. Various companies make it . Colourfix is available on Amazon in colourless or in various colours if you prefer.

    Wouldn't a cold pressed paper with natural grain work good? For pastels in general you want something with more tooth to it so the pastels have something to grab to.

    • @SyndiaArt
      @SyndiaArt  Před 6 lety +3

      For dry pastel maybe more than oil pastel. I don't think I love very toothy paper personally. I like porous paper the most I think like Somerset but I have to test more. I know that pastel paper like Canson Mi-teinte has too many grooves for my liking but like you said maybe a good cold pressed paper would work. I have to keep testing.
