  • In this video I go over the basic tools and installation of the Newtronics Electronic Optical Ignition system for the Yamaha RD250. I briefly go over the wiring and ignition timing as per the instructions. I've installed this kit on both a 1975 US spec rd250 and rd350 with no issues at this time.
    This kit seems to be somewhat universal for (nearly) anything from 1 to 3 cylinders (3 IG outputs) if it was originally using a points cam anyway. For anyone curious about other potential projects for this Pickup/CDI setup.

    A bit of a boring video but I thought it may be helpful for people in the future, I did leave out a few small details in the video but if you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability. Thank you all for watching!

      I opted to just tuck & secure the original orange and grey wires back around the stator harness, incase it’s sold later and someone wants to convert it back to points. Same for the grey & orange wires near the coils 👌

      @@WreckedRevival Gorgeous RD... I have a 77 RD400 completely stock just the way I like em. I put an HPI ign on it that has an ignition curve and I was stunned how much more power the bike made low and mid rpms BUT there was almost no flywheel effect and I had to increase idle a good bunch to get it to tick over. it smoked pretty bad at a red light.. and I missed the smoothening effect flywheel gives. I finally splurged on a VAPE that has a hefty flywheel (and makes way more power for lights ect) and the bike felt soooo good and smooth with it. It just ran better. However there is no curve in bare bones VAPE so this winter ill be buying their programmer and module and giving it one. All this to say.. flywheel effect is VERY noticeable in these little motors and was never something I ever thought about until I went from the hpi to the vape. Its worth it imo.

      Nice! Yeah there's definitely some Pros and Cons to having a lightweight flywheel/rotor. HPI does actually make a heavier flywheel that's got up to two different Ignition curves and is programmable but has it no provisions for lighting. Only place I've seen it available is on their website. webshop.hpi.be/product/068k089/

    Had the model before that one the YDS7 ,here is a tip put straight bars on the bike, at 70 mph you get front end lift causing wheel wobble, with straight bars it move the centre of balance forward and stops it.

    • @WreckedRevival
      @WreckedRevival  Před rokem

      Appreciate the advice! I’d heard that was an issue with RD’s as well and planned on dampeners/stabilizers for those in the future. We also have a 72’ YDS7 250 I’m working on right now! Will do the same for it, thanks!

    • @peterwright9546
      @peterwright9546 Před rokem +1

      @@WreckedRevival Its because there is less contact with the road stabilizers dont put the wheel back down Norton Straight bars work very good moves the weight back to front wheel it is the wind on the rider with high bars that cause it to lift it happens at lower speeds if a strong head wind. Watch it in high speed curves if you hit a bump in the road it can turn into a tank slapper.

      @@peterwright9546 Thanks definitely good to know! Makes since why I've seen a lot of the Rd's with straight bars and rearsets since you've mentioned that. I'm sure that forward leaning weight shift helps a good bit even though it looks a little uncomfortable lol!

    • @WreckedRevival
      @WreckedRevival  Před rokem

      I ended up pulling them back around where the harness goes through the case & zip tied them around the harness. Wanted to keep them away from any spiny bits and leave them incase it's sold later and someone wants to convert it back to points. Good luck with the install! Haven't had any issues on the three bikes I've put the Newtronics on. 🤙

    Is it still running good
    I installed on mine and notice that after running hard stator got really hot as because these are electro magnetic and black point start melting because of heat

    • @WreckedRevival
      @WreckedRevival  Před 11 dny

      Hmm that’s odd sounds like maybe your magnetos windings coating flaked off or shorted somehow and cooked itself. All of the bikes I’ve installed them on are still running good.
      I may be switching our RD350 to an HPI ignition though, on their website they have CDI’s that are programmable with switchable maps, tach signal output, rev limiter, believe two step and a lot of other fun/handy stuff for monitoring etc.

    you shouldve done an idle before and after, instead of just revving it and then jumping to going out on the road. no way to see the before and after. sweet install i bet that optical transistor really helps at high rpm

      Yeah I definitely should've but believe I edited that part of the video out either to keep the video length down or may have had audio issues with the clip. Definitely happy with the Newtronic systems, haven't had any issues on the 3 bikes I've installed them on over the past year!

    I spy your DS7😀 BTW the control box is not a CDI (Capacitor Discharge Ignition) it’s a TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignition) as you still have battery powered coils. The bikes sound great

    • @WreckedRevival
      @WreckedRevival  Před 4 měsíci

      That's true, I frequently use technical terms a little more loosely than I probably should and in a generic sense not only because it's a little easier to say but also so that it may be easier for less mechanically adept viewers to relate to as far as what somethings function is (without further explanation) , in this case the switching/timing control module controlling ignition timing.
      A lot of people couldn't care less about whether it's a Thyristor/Mosfet TCI or an AC/DC CDI and just want to know how to install them and that's who I generally make these types of install videos for. 😛

      @@m1a1hm I bought the complete Vape/PowerDynamo CDI replacement kit from Economy Cycle. The complete kit replaces the stock generator, points, condenser, coils and regulator. That's the way to go so you're not relying on any old electrics at all. Don't go cheap and just buy a partial kit. Replace the whole system - you'll never regret it. Terry owns Economy Cycle and has sold (and installed) hundreds of Vapes and they've proven to be super reliable systems. I also bought the additional recommended parts and pieces from them for my install and the bike is so much more powerful and burns cleaner. It's like a new bike now.

      I'm sure they could probably work with other bikes that originally had points but not sure what all applications they'd work on. I've never tried Newtronics on other platforms but it'd just depend on the diameter & depth of the original points cam.
