Well this was before we knew about CTE and people were playing with concussions. I played back in the day, only in high school and the word concussion was never used. We used to say you got your bell rung. You would sit out a couple of plays and back in you would go. What you romanticize I think was some truly terrible times in the game. Let’s not forget hitting defenseless receivers. I am not sure if you played but it was truly brutal and peoples brains got messed up. They still do actually.

One Christmas back then my uncle gave me a facesimile autograph Oakland Raiders Football With All The Player’s Names. George was one of those players. Fast Forward I’m now over 30 and my supervisor call’s us into his office to tell us he will be going into the hospital because he has cancer. I went home that day and found the autograph Oakland Raiders football my uncle gave me and took it to work. Knowing that My supervisor was a Huge Oakland Raiders Fan. And handed him the football and told him this will give you something to do in the hospital while you recover from cancer. His wife said somedays he would just hold the ball , other days he would read all the names, most of all he would hug the football. Never did find out what happened to the football. All I know is. Could Blanda do today what he did yesterday? I seem to recall
he was mostly used as a kicker. Remember, Danny White
was a punter for Dallas, and backup QB. White was a good
punter, and he could still bail out the Cowboys as a QB as well.
Some would say Blanda could do so with all the protection the
QB now receives today. He would last longer, But he played when
players were getting their Rockem Sockem heads knocked off!
You got blasted running out of bounds. Today, they throw the
mellow yellow for barely slapping the helmet! Blanda was
    one tough cookie.

I remember Blanda playing a Monday Night Football game against Buffalo in his last season. The game was a real snoozer for three quarters. In the 4th quarter, the game came alive with scoring with each team scoring 21 points. The game went past midnight, so it was 12:06 AM and George's 47th birthday. Oakland was in possession with very little time on the clock, on Buffalo's 40 something yard line. As it was, he came off the bench to keep the game alive as the backup quarterback. Field goal time. Oakland wins if Blanda makes the field goal and on his 47th birthday to boot! You could cut the tension with a knife! The ball is snapped and......Blanda didn't even kick the ball into the end zone! Oakland lost. Of course, one play doesn't take away from all he accomplished but I'll never get that game out of my head. RIP George.

George Blanda was my favorite NFL/ AFL QB! The Old Man as John Madden called him started as a Chicago Bear with Papa Halas, QB the Bud Adams Oliers to the AFL first 3 Championships winning two in "61 & 62" and losing to the Lamar Hunt Dallas Texans, now the Kansas City Chiefs in Triple Overtime in "63", only to find himself on AL Davis Oakland Raiders under the Great Coach John Madden! I believe John's respect for George's football athletic abilities and knowledge is what indeared John to George and when John was interviewed in his bus during his Broadcasting Career with His best Bud Pat Summerall the Ex Chicago Cardinal place kicker! John was asked if he would ever liked to Coach another NFL Team? John paused and said yes! He said I would've love to coach the Chicago Bears! With the great players that played there and it's history! with talking with George about his playing time and dealing with George S Halas, I'd like to have given it a shot! George Blanda was a Great Man that played Great Football and is an Old School NFL/AFL HOF "81" Player that was a Champion even before his two titles he won in Houston! That most of these new fangled football players with these F_CKING TV TIMEOUTS! where games are now 3 hour TV Commercials and once in a while a football game breaks out! Instead of a hour game! The new players couldn't hold George Blanda's jockstrap without running over to the sideline to get some blow! (Oxygen) well done video on the history of the Great George Blanda! That the League was built on the back of these Great Football Players!

George Blanda was sort of a mystery to me as a kid in the 60s. I wondered why he continued to play when the game got more and more for younger men. I'm retired myself now, and this life of mine has likewise moved opportunity to younger men. Now I understand why George focused so hard on the things that meant so much. It's all you have left.

NHL's & WHL Gordie Howe, played 32 seasons and retired at the age of 52! Held the majority of stats records ( not to mention, he was a fighter too ), especially ALL - TIME in Pts totals until surpassed by Wayne Gretzky. Gordie's career out shines Blanda's hands down.

Gordie Howe is in the NHL GOAT conversation and as Mr Hockey was an absolute true legend.
With that, why are you comparing Howe & Blanda?
Not once during this video does the narrator state that Blanda was the greatest professional athlete to play past 45, but rather complimented his career and acknowledging he was the oldest player in Pro FOOTBALL history.

Blanda had an amazing Reg. Season in '61. He4 had 36 TD passes in 12 games. He was averaging 3 per game. In a 17 game season he could have had 51 for the year IF---IF he could have maintained that pace. Just for comparison, Marino only had 32 TD passes in '84 in his 1st 12 games and Marino benefitted from the "Mel Blount Rule" of '78 concerning bump and run with receivers.
