  • The Goldfinch is a lovely little bird you might spot in your garden. It's easy to spot with its bright red face and yellow wing patches. These birds are quite small, about the size of a sparrow. They love to eat seeds, especially from thistles and teasels. You'll often see them hanging upside down on plants to get at the seeds!
Goldfinches live all over the UK and much of Europe. They build neat, cup-shaped nests in trees or bushes. The female lays 4-6 eggs, which hatch after about two weeks. Both parents look after the chicks.
In winter, Goldfinches often gather in big groups called charm. They make a nice tinkling sound when they sing. Sadly, people used to catch them for pets because of their pretty song and looks. Now, they're protected by law. If you want to attract Goldfinches to your garden, try putting out nyjer seeds or sunflower hearts.
