    As much as it hurts me, I’m not shocked. I have always preferred traditional tv over streaming and now that shows and even whole channels are going off the air really shows how much times are changing. I was and still am a metalhead/rockhead. Kerrang was my go-to channel, I would always have it on as background music and from that I discovered such bands as Bullet for My Valentine, Billy Talent and The Hives and all of that was from Kerrang. Of course, I was very sad when Scuzz went off air, as again, I discovered bands such as Avenged Sevenfold and 30 Seconds to Mars. I love watching music videos, seeing how interesting they are and how creative the directors are. (Hello, The White Stripes' "Hardest Button to Button", directed by the legendary Michel Gondry).
    I know it's all my nostalgia talking, thank you for everything Kerrang! For giving all of the goths/emos/punks/metalheads of my generation something to enjoy and act as a tastemaker for their music tastes.

    The problem with music videos is standard video not H D. Channel 4 should sold the channel to another station.
    The problem with channel 4 the on screen logos cause damage to TV over a period of time. They should remove the logo on screen could increase viewer and advertise revenue.

I only really watched Kerrang around 2006/07/08 time and when MySpace and CZcams started having music on them, I almost immediately forgot about music channels. Hi Adam, I am starting to get worried for Freesat. It is co-owned by BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, but it seems those four juggernauts of broadcasting are just leaving Freesat to ruin. It seems being on their EPG is very expensive compared to Sky. I am concerned. Not only have they soon no music channels, but they have just 2 movie channels, Film 4 and Talking Pictures TV. It is only going to get worse.

      Yes channels such as CNN are big losses on Freesat. Talk TV isn’t great that they dropped all traditional tv avenues. It’s a pity the access charges to get on Freesat is so expensive, there is plenty of very low grade Sky channels with very low viewership which could gain an improved audience if they were listed on the Freesat EPG. Wonder will we see some more premium Sky channels such as Nick, MTV etc jumping on Freesat as Sky moves towards Sky Glass and an non satellite future. It’s also a pity that most Freesat boxes and TV’s have very difficult manual tuning menus making seeing non Freesat channels mostly impractical.

  • @asterickjones
    @asterickjones Před měsícem +2

    Couldn't Channel 4 sell them to another company who might keep them open? A lot more to them than just showing back to back music video (that's all the That's channels do), there are music stars picking videos (eg Shaggy's 00's Hot Shots, Gabrielle's Feel Good 90s), chart rundowns such as charts of the year, themed shows all with one artist and so on, CZcams doesn't replace that. It's why the MTV Music channels are still quite good as well, you get the chart of the year etc.

  • @ErinStephanie-mf2qk
    @ErinStephanie-mf2qk Před měsícem +14

    You can understand it. For over 15 years now, you have been able to make your own personalised music video playlist, on this platform. Most of the music channels, are now nostalgia, rather than new music: Now That’s What I Call Music, and now the That’s TV network, have muscled in on this dwindling but saturated market, over the last 10-15 years.

    • @PopUnlimited
      @PopUnlimited Před měsícem +7

      Yes CZcams is a good alternative, but a video channel, when well curated, is just nice easy viewing. You don't always want to pick the songs. I like flicking them on late at night when I cba to get into something heavy like a drama. And these channels still have a monthly reach of 1 million+. I'm surprised Channel 4 hasn't seen fit to put these channels on their app. They could run them for next to nothing there and it might bring a little bit of extra traffic to the app for little effort.
      Also worth noting that new channels from Now and That's TV are still launching.. so why are they able to make money out of music videos and Channel 4 think they can't

    • @ErinStephanie-mf2qk
      @ErinStephanie-mf2qk Před měsícem +5

      @@PopUnlimitedThats TV have filled the gap, of a series of local channel closures throughout the UK in recent years. These were the local channels the Coalition government introduced about a decade ago. In a way, they were a blank sheet, and music filled a lot of their early content. With a few Benny Hill and Kenny Everett repeats. Filling the gap of another fallen channel, Vintage TV. They themselves have expanded their platform. But it’s more repeats. They don’t do any original programming. C4 needs to make new programmes, its broadcast remit relies on this. And that is costly. All That’s TV need to do, is provide an occasional news service, they stick in ad breaks without presenters anyway. So you can see why C4 got rid of its music channels.

  • @97channel
    @97channel Před měsícem +1

    I think that a less obvious yet significant culprit for these channels closing is a shift in the pop music scene which has been going on for about the last twenty years. Where there were once a tight core of acts within a very controlled music industry, the field has opened massively now and it's much harder to create a please-all playlist. It's also why I think Top Of The Pops ended. It does all link in with how streaming has changed the landscape, but I do think that there are other factors such as the way that there's now over sixty years of back-catalogue material from the start of the pop music boom which is pulling people away from new music. People's relationship with music is changing in curious ways. The MTV age is certainly now a thing of the past.

    Music and it's consumption has generally changed over the past decades.
    Technology and society has changed it's attitude with music since the mid 20th century. In used to be that playing a musical instrument was common. Buying sheet music and learning songs from movies and top pop songs used to be a popular past time. Music then became a lucrative industry than a talent. It was a way to appeal to the new consent of teenagers.
    By the 1960s radio for listening to music rather than radio soaps and plays had become popular among teenagers. Teenagers with their disposable income would buy records of the latest music rather than waiting for them to be played on the radio.
    In the 2000s music video channels had become popular because they were cheap to run. You pay a licence fee to show the videos which is a percentage of the income of the channel income but you don't need to create content. Some channels like MTV would make programmes like TRL which would bring in viewers and increase advertising which lead the main MTV to becoming an entertainment channel because they were paying for content so why should they pay a percentage of the channel income to the music industry if they weren't showing music videos.
    Other channels would have bands and music artists choosing their favourite songs and showing the music videos and having chart countdowns with guests but these programmes stopped as did mainstream programmes like Top of the Pops and CD:UK. Since then the music industry moved in to concerts and merchandise.

      They still could have used it online.
      Imagine a the box streaming service where you could make your own music video playlists or play curated ones. Spotify does exist, but nothing really for music videos. YT music is a joke...

    The war against linear TV. So shortsighted; once these channels are gone, they're gone. How does closing them down completely help their obsession with streaming?! I have always watched music channels, and I will mourn their loss. MTV has seemingly long since abandoned most music output (the '16 and pregnant' nonsense they fell into) and VEVO in its current form, which I watch through my Apple TV box, is a poor substitute (very limited catalogue). I was lucky to see a floor full of these music channels when I did some work for a broadcaster a few years ago, just an unattended collection of racks of hard drives and phone connections (text requests etc.), but there was nevertheless a 'buzz' amongst those tasked with scheduling the collections. In financial terms they were and are very cheap to run, yet seemingly in this new utterly soulless world of streaming, this is, apparently, the way forward. Stop the world, I want to get off, and shame on you Channel 4.

    One thing I’m confused by was the box originated from an on demand music network in the USA. Was it ever on demand in the UK?

      It was. I remember seeing it late night on Sky analogue after Granada Plus closed down. They advertised the playlist with (I think) 3 digit codes and you'd occasionally see an overlay on the screen of someone entering a code, followed by "Thanx".

    Even now last week, I had the box on in the background, and discovered new music I’ve never heard of before. Same way I did 20 years ago. So it’s not all just nostalgia based viewing. They are a great way for artists to be discovered, which is harder to do on CZcams due to algorithms, or showing you stuff you’ve previously watched. I’m sad about it, same way I was when the vault closed months back. They just needed streamlined maybe, just the one channel, an hour each of different genres, live sets, maybe even a half hour TRL style show. I dunno, I still miss CDUK amd TOTP

    I wonder what time they'll shut the channel down? Will it be at midnight, as soon as July 1st starts? or will it be at the end of July 1st, like 11:59PM?

    A sad time but seemingly inevitable that these channels would be coming up on the chopping block.
    I remember The Box in the late 90s/early 00s when it was in its viewer request format. Whilst they picked the playlist, there was no content control so you'd frequently see popular music videos multiple times in a row. I stopped watching it regularly when it became a pre-programmed channel which is when these channels lost their USP in my opinion.
