In 1939, where thunder roared, A Polish gondolier, with heart outpoured, Found himself amidst the battle's din, Defending Poland, determined to win. In Warsaw's streets, where shadows crept, Amidst the rubble, where sorrow swept, He took his place, with oar in hand, A symbol of a once peaceful land. Behind a panzer, cold and stark, He sought protection in the dark. The rain poured down, the wind did wail, As he faced the onslaught, fierce and pale. The city he loved, now torn apart, Each street a memory, each building a heart. The gondola, once gliding through the streams, Now caught in the nightmare of shattered dreams. The panzer's bulk, a monstrous shield, In this war-torn, desolate field. Its iron form, a brutal mark, Of battles fought in the dead of dark. He clutched his oar, his makeshift spear, A relic of a life once dear. With every raindrop, every gust, He felt his homeland turning to dust. The roar of tanks, the clash of guns, Echoed the cries of daughters and sons. In the chaos, he stood his ground, Amidst the thunder's relentless sound. His comrades fell, their blood ran cold, Stories of bravery left untold. The gondolier, with tears in his eyes, Looked to the heavens, questioned the skies. Why must peace be torn asunder? Why must dreams be buried under? In the midst of war's cruel might, He fought on, through the darkest night. The wind howled fierce, the rain poured hard, Each moment more cruel, each second marred. Yet in his heart, a flicker remained, A hope that someday peace would be gained. He thought of rivers, calm and serene, Of tranquil waters, of pastures green. But now the streets were bathed in red, The echoes of a world now dead. As bullets flew and bombs did fall, He heard his country's desperate call. With oar as weapon, he stood tall, Defending Poland, giving his all. The rain mingled with tears uncried, For fallen friends, for dreams that died. Yet in the fury of the storm, He found a strength, a will reborn. Behind the panzer, in that grim place, He saw the fear in every face. But also saw the fire, the fight, A nation’s heart, a people’s light. In every crack, in every stone, The spirit of Poland’s pride was shown. For though the enemy pressed so near, Their love for home was strong and clear. The battle raged, the night grew long, Yet he held firm, his will so strong. In the darkest depths of war’s cruel tide, He fought with honor, with undying pride. And as dawn broke, with sky so gray, He knew the price that they would pay. For freedom's cost is always steep, Yet in their hearts, its flame would keep. The rain fell softer, the wind did sigh, As he gazed upon the broken sky. With weary limbs and bleeding hands, He dreamt of peace in distant lands. For in the heart of every fight, Is a longing for the morning light. A hope that one day war will cease, And in its place, eternal peace. In 1939, with courage high, A Polish gondolier looked to the sky. Defending Poland, with all his might, He fought for love, for home, for right.
