    I finally did the job myself and what a great experience it was. doing an awesome job with you tips and pointers you gave in your video I had to change a total of 6 hoses and a lot of back and forth to the Caterpillar dealer. But the results came out great. I work with a bunch of guys you work on there own trucks and they were able to help me with finalizing the work. Thanks again.

    Hello, just wanted to say I find your videos to be informative and invaluable. I own a 1995 Beaver Marquis motorhome with a 3176B CAT engine. Although many of your segments pertain to newer engines i think the cat specific tips are fairly applicable regardless of the engine. I especially like the troubleshooting tips you provide. I have changed fluids and filters on my engine and have made a minor repair to the connection between the water pump and oil cooler. Your videos are giving me the confidence to take care of my huge engine (compares to my v6 care engine) and hopefully what to look for to avoid problems on the road. Thanks for putting out quality information.

    Make sure to replace, and install the pressure relief valve in the compressor head. In cold climates, moisture can freeze in the discharge line, and blow the compressor cylinder head gasket. I've seen it happen many times.

    Even if you do not change the oil supply line, you should pull it off and blow air through it. I have seen oil lines that were still fairly flexable have the inner liner come loose. That can cause a bad oil flow problems to the compressor . i have also installed reed valves on the intake of Cat compressors. These engines will pull a vacuum on the intake at slower idle speeds. That causes the intake to suck oil up past the compressor piston rings into the head of the compressor. When the compressor kicks in to pump air, that oil gets pumped into the air system. Most experienced drivers I know idle them at 900 rpm to create a slight amount of boost to prevent the oil pumping, but the reed valve on the compressor intake is a better answer to me because it allows lower idle speeds. Just my experiences with the cat engines.

    Hey @Adept Ape! I'm sooo happy we ran by this video! We have oil in our air tanks when we purge, so I think we need a new air compressor on our CAT 3126. We had a truck mechanic look at the system and he said we did NOT have an air dryer on it (ugh!). Originally, we bought the school bus in Phoenix, AZ and drove it up to Ontario, Canada, where we're doing the conversion. So we definitely need to get this fixed.
    Do you have a video on installing an air dryer on the CAT 3126? I'm trying to find it on your channel! This one on changing the air compressor seems pretty straight forward and based on your video, I think this is one of those projects that we'd be able to take on!
    Thanks so much! Loving your videos!

    • @georgekuersten5984
      @georgekuersten5984 Před 7 lety +2

      The Cummins service manual says to time the air compressor as well. It's a little known detail most techs. overlook. Doesn't hurt anything, just allows the compressor to operate in unison with the harmonics of the engine. Back in the day, you could walk across a truck stop parking lot, and hear the big cam Cummins compressors that weren't timed. They would emit a fluctuating chatter, on the loaded cycle.

  • @NEILSWORLD

Why are the supply coolant line into the rear of air compressor head, when read Haldex manual, the supply coolant line can be plumbed into the air compressor block ? Which would give better temperature control and coolant flow for better uniform air compressor block temperature for rings and pistons. could rings be getting hotter etc loose tension , thus becoming oil burner?

    Hey Josh, is it possible for the air compressor to push oil into the cooling system of the truck? Got a C15 ACERT MXS and we cannot figure out how the oil keeps getting in the coolant. The oil cooler was replaced and didn't fix the problem. The coolant line on the air compressor is "sweating". It also seems as if there is some oil getting into the air dryer as well. We are thinking of replacing both components and doing yet another coolant flush. The cooling system isn't overpressurized do we don't believe the cylinder head on the engine is cracked. Any advice would be super helpful, thank you if you see this.

    • @Coyner4321
      @Coyner4321 Před rokem

      @@MrKatt68 Haven't gotten into the engine yet, still running the truck (it's not a full time truck at the moment) and just continuing to flush the coolant to keep the oil contamination down as much as we can.. I have however changed the air dryer and I also pulled the feed line off the compressor that goes to the dryer and it was dry inside, so I know the compressor isn't sending oil into the air system. My best guess as to what's going on is liner cavitation from too many years of improper coolant use. The truck had green coolant in it when they bought it and I suspect the previous owner did not test the coolant and add the SCA's, which in turned caused 'electrolysis' or liner cavitation, causing pressurized oil to inject itself right into the coolant surrounding the liners. The only piece of the puzzle that doesn't fit is there is no coolant at all in the oil. So I'm not sure if my theory is correct or not. I think we're going to find a used engine for it and swap it entirely.

    How hard is it to upgrade my air dryer? I saw some guys mentioned AD-SP and AD-IP. I'm assuming they're spin-on cartridges. I would have to replace the whole unit? And which upgrade would fit in the same spot which is on the passenger side under the firewall/floorboard? Thanks for the reply👍

      +Big R Phillips You know I've never done any sort of air dryer retrofit, just serviced them. Does anyone reading this have a suggestion?

    Hi, you videos are a God sent. I have a 6nz c15 cat in a Frieghtliner century and I have to change the air compressor. My question is do I need to drain the oil if my oil supply line needs to be changed?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 6 lety

      +Valentin Espinal No you don't, the oil supply line will have a little oil in them, but you don't have to drain the engine.

      Adept Ape thanks I can’t wait to get it done I’m still shopping around for the bendex model I found one place that carries it in West Palm Beach but they want a $1000.00 core charge 😬😬

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 6 lety

      +Valentin Espinal Well the good thing is you get your core charge back when you turn in the old part. Just don't lose it.

      Hello Adept Ape quick question do I have to remove the gear from the old compressor and can I use my old values after I replace all of the O rings. Or it will be a different setup going from a double piston to a single. Thanks for you time

      Adept Ape hello there just to inform you I started my air compressor project today (worst day after thanksgiving to start mechanical work. Happy Thanksgiving by the way). I ran into a few snags removing the compressor my original one comes with a 3/4” spacer that goes on the compressor to meet up with the housing and most of the hoses we’re toast. There is one hose that I couldn’t remove that goes to the head of the motor. And all three nuts that hold compressor were all loss. That raised a question should I use lock tight and what is the torque specs for those nuts.

    My trailer keep losing air really fast when it’s loaded heavy. Doesn’t matter what kinda trailer so I know it has to do something with the truck. Could it be my air compressor? Also I hear a lot of whistling

    I'm having hell LOL!!!! Mine doesn't want to slide into place. I thought maybe that I need to clock the gear to mesh but that's not even working. Any ideas?

    Is there any way to adapt from a C15 to a C13? The C13 air compressor is the worst ever seen. I’ve had mine replaced about 3 times.

  • @dalebrandt4753

    Ok so my C7 only has two bolts holding it to the gear assembly ? Took both out and compressor seem tight as hell ? dead center of compressor has 2 small nuts there on the front of gear cover. Took it off and you can see nut holding gear on compressor shaft. Do I need to take that nut off ?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 7 lety

      +Dale Brandt There is a bracket on the back of the compressor that holds it to the block. You have to remove the power steering pump and then it comes off. The compressor should come right out then.

    I have a Cat C7 in a 2006 Freightliner M2 and I want to eliminate the air compressor because it is not performing any function now. If I remove the air compressor, will the power steering pump (ZF FN4 model) bolt on to the rear of the timing gear case, in place of the compressor? The ZF has a splined shaft which now engages a matching recess machined on the compressor crankshaft.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 6 lety

      +George Phillip You would need a geared power steering pump. The pump is splined and wouldn't fit the gears on the front.

    Random question when installing the oring style fitting on the air compressor is their any torque specs or just snug tight?? Or it's not possible to torque ?

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  Před 7 lety +2

      +Johnathen Thompson There is a specific torque for the normal tighten down fittings, the ones with the locknut and swivel plate I've never seen a torque for them, but there probably is. I've never seen someone torque them though.
