    I raced Superbikes for 25 years. In that time we only blew up the engine twice. Once was really bad, a rod through the cases and it destroyed everything. But we learned from that and built a better engine. More reliable and stronger. And won every race i entered the remaining season. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Keep your chin up.

      We don't make a habit of blowing up engines while racing bikes @@SNAFU.. a catastrophic engine failure in a race bike can kill you or someone else when it oils the track.

    I've spent well over $100K on Honda K20/24 blow ups. It's "almost" always oil delivery issues and they are super sensitive to lack of oil pressure when/where needed. You need to talk to John Grudinski at Hytech. His knowledge of K20 motors for racing is what you need.

      it is always piston speed that gets rod bolts to fail. After 100k you still didnt figure that one out?

      After many blown motors with not a single rod bolt failure as the cause I have to say your simply wrong. My goals were to pioneer the installation of the K20 into the F3 chassis. Integrating a geartronic paddle shift system. High 400HP range. We eventually got there. My cars won championships and paved the way for many racing K20 installs. It just cost a lot in failures to get there. Much of the work was done with support from HPD.

      his abs system upload recently makes me wonder if that could help times here. maybe not that 10k module, but something to do some math and get the car more responsive could be useful.. time will tell.

    People always underestimate and don’t understand how important getting your braking right is. Not only for that particular braking zone but it dramatically improves your corner entry grip, which increases your corner exit speed, which then obviously helps your speed down a long straight. It’s one of the most critical things to get right and one overlooked by beginners everywhere

    What makes me think is that K24 was a bomb-proof 4Piston engine, tuned by some of the best (Haltech people), it shouldn't have a single reason to blow up. Can't wait for your teardown video, really wanna see what went wrong.

    I don't know anybody that's ever been able to keep a high power K series alive very long, I was hoping you'd be the first. I have seen several "no expense spared" builds, they all end up the same. If you want to run at those power levels, just have another engine on the stand ready.

      I saw a video of a guy on a Ninja 400 SMOKING riders on R1s and S 1000 RRs at a track day. 😅

      That's what people don't understand about racing. It's easy to build a monster powered car that makes the odd pull for CZcams but building a high-powered car that can run lap after lap is a TOTALLY different matter. Be interesting to see the cause of the failure.

      @ZREXER1250 100% old track dog myself. I ran a variety of cars like Panteras, BMWs, Porsches, etc. I watched a lot of people pop engines all the time, so instead, I focused on brakes, suspension, and made them as light as I could, but kept the engines stock. I won a lot of races (amateur) and had a great time. You don't need big power if you learn how to carry speed. To me, that's the whole point of the road courses. At the end of the day, it's just about fun. As long as you go home with a smile and your face, it was a good day no matter your times.

      K swap is very strong NA, which is what the mr2 guys use it for. It's when it's boosted that you run into these issue. @@izzy031096

    Sorry to hear of the failure and I can tell you I've been there many times before and feel your pain. I absolutely LOVED the team going out in the fading light to look for the rod. Its memories like that you just can never replace and a reminder of how awesome it is to have those kinds of friendships.

    You need Mahle rods. German rods for the Japanese engine in your Italian sportscar. Germany held the axis powers together. You'll be golden until someone brings a 917K.

    I'll be honest it's refreshing to see a youtuber who can build a car and also drive it. In a road course setting. It's underappreciated. It's just that.. you're pushing what 1000whp from that turbo k series? That was always going to end in tears.

    I play with 30s era traditional flathead fords. Parts are very hard to come by and it’s always a 1 step forward, 2 steps back game. But the payoff is 💯 worth it.

    Danggggg..that sucks. I’m sure 4piston knows its way around a k series, but I wonder if the high loads for long durations is what took a toll. I’m sure 4piston has built motors for road race setups before so this is a surprise. Rod bolts snapped inside means maybe that’s where the failure came from? Anyhow, I’m curious to see what the autopsy reveals.

    Im going to make the assumption you had the 300m rods with the 625 bolts? 300m vs the 4340 look identical unfortunately. Saenz does say any modification to the 300m rods and they need to be re shot peened and polished. It appears Saenz rods are all discontinued on real st? The end of the video , sounded like it may have been a rod bolt that let go first? You never did mention the rpm's you were running that day. If you never calculated the forces on the rod and piston as the rpm goes up, its a eye opener for sure.

    Love the channel Mike. Inspiring build. You won't hear any second guessing of your design choices from me. In addition to seeing the engine tear-down, I'm very interested to see how 4piston (and Quaife, for that matter) responds to this failure. I recognize that racing creates 'extreme stresses', but isn't that what these components were engineered for? I think these companies would do well for themselves to back their products and commit to providing you with replacements for little/no cost. What are the odds of that happening?

    I blew up the engine in my Viper GTs first at Texas World running with the NARRA guys (rod #2 out the block), and then at COTA running with the Porsche club (nitriding error on the new crank). It sucks. After the 2nd blowup, I rebuilt the engine again and stayed off the track. My pockets aren't deep enough to keep that up.

    Hey Mike, I've been following from France and just spun a rod at the Nürburgring this year, just as I was about to log an under8 lap. After having had so many issues with the car. Shit happens.     It'll be very interesting to see the teardown and what went wrong. By all rights that engine should have been very strong, especially while you were still on low boost. As a fellow (but much lower budget) mid engine K swapped track car with aspirations of forced induction...I'm invested to see the weak points on track!

    One of your most watchable episodes yet in my opinion Mike!! And on the bright side, that blown up engine makes for tons of great future content. Engine autopsy/post mortem is always super interesting. I just hope you don't incur an outrageous amount of cost from peripherals like dry sump pan, etc. Hopefully most things are repairable.

    One thing that I believe will give plenty of time for not much effort is having a fully flat floor to cover the exposed bits and bobs. At least better fuel economy if you consider endurance races in the future.
    Don't think you could get a diffuser to work so far from the ground but the drag reduction is nice.

    Well... that's an engine i would have love to see on Eric's channel, I Do Cars, for an epic teardown. There was definitely malice in the combustion palace.     Just want to point out that all of the major failures of the car (First intercooler revision not withstanding) have been products of other professionals with crazy amounts of money involved. You would have guessed it would have been one of the suspension members that broke first (not saying its bad work, just saying its experimental). Good job to Mike.

    The dry sump is probably 6061 wich welds very well.
    Machine the hole out to size and weld a billet block in place. Then half a day in the mill and your good to go

    Maybe, K24 doesn't have as much engineering margin as it has been know. Hopefully, through this issue will give insights to build a reliable and robust powertrain, and we will learn about them

    Thats racing. It's still the best looking Ferrari on the planet IMO. I like it more than the F40 I grew up with on my bedroom wall.
    That was oil starvation for the rod to grab the crank that hard, how and why with you set up is a mystery. Motor choice will be your savior on cost to fix, not even a honda guy but I think you made the right choice. It would be fun to see a stock vs your build, a stock 308 would be lucky to run under 2:50's,.So you built the right way to eventually get to a reliable race car. Once you get through all the teething pains of new build. Probably best to stay state side and sort that out first. . I would put a bone stock junk yard motor in and see if it works, rings gaped for boost.Just to get seat time and tune the loose nut behind the wheel. Either way you're having fun and living the dream perfecting your skills.

    Low speed pre-ignition. Happens out of nowhere on turbo cars. Check the ring lands, detonation always takes out the ring lands on the intake side.

    I've blown up my fair share of engines, two engines in less than 24 hours. One was a tired LT1 with 160k miles, so no real surprise there, the other was an M52 that sheared the oil pump shaft on a miss-shift.
    The moral is, you get back up. Sometimes it takes more time and tears than you want.

    If race car... id tear it down after its first track weekend to see if anything got rattled loose or excessive wear from use. I know mike was excited to run the car again, as we all were to see it run again, so i dont blame him. I just would hate for the failure to be something he could have fixed before he ran it again. I know mike will fix it either way. Man's got the skills.

    Tuning Fork will be very interested to know. The man knows what hes doing so im also interested what the issue was. These things are never a good thing, but hey... just think positive...content...content...content.. and a new bullerproof build.     Big bummer that the engine let go. We'll see what teardown reveals, but I'm going to put my chips on it being due to an oil control issue. Now it's time to head over the the Stanceworks store to buy some merch.🙂

      its not... This morons have pushed it to 9000rpm under boost. Max rpm for k24 with this spec parts under boost is 7800rpm.

    Super rad car. Very proud of you. Tons of work and time we didn't see and we need to see to appreciate. I want to see this. I'm not going to say do this or that. It's rad your racing and beating on your own ideas and work. My only thing is I keep seeing that as a great street fighter with street manners. Those transmissions seem weak but all yall are just beating them up racing and doing rad things. They are not weak. So with that being said make another one for the road brother.     My first guess is that #4 failure would have something to do with low flywheel mass combined with the load transitions when lift-shifting the sequential. Lift off throttle at high rev’s, big vacuum load, smack next gear in = rapid deceleration of rotating asssermbly. The combination of high vacuum load at high rpm and next gear indexing might have overly stressed the least dampened rod (#4). Likely less stressful on the rotating assembly to pull or cut ign on shifts at high rpm, keep some exhaust pressure in it or at least not pull a vacuum near redline. With the supply of great O.E. engines dwindling we should really be measuring crankshaft deflection at each journal to pick up on resonances before they become destructive.

    You know what this means, right? Prep the dissection table, it's time to go dirty. Maybe even visit your neighbro's shop to annoy him about sockets. :))
    Jokes aside. Time to learn what blew this engine up and bulletproof the next one. First step was recovering that missing chunk. Also, make sure you're at the very least around that dissection even if you're not the one doing it. Association is a driver's most important tool.
    ProTip for @ 3:55 , have a 30 cm lady slipper - pry bar combination in your tool box at all times. You never know when you might need something to move, pry or help yourself with to align a bolt hole. Screwdrivers aren't that useful in such shituations. If you can find a combination tool that also has the adjustable pry bar end, you're in game. I sh!t you not, that tool is the most important one could have in their box for when you really need to shift stuff around.

    Try nordlock washers next time if it keeps happening. McMaster Carr has them, and its the only thing that's worked on my turbo elbow nuts from backing off on my sr20. Granted that's heat, rather than vibration, but I think it would help in this application a lot as well.

      Xray the good rods, strain test the surviving rod bolts check they are in spec.

    Damn bummed she blew. But that's how it goes sometimes. Clearly the car RIPS on track, 1:56's in LOW BOOST mode, that's nuts. You'll be in the 1:40's before you know it man.

    Loving the build, but for gods sakes lower the car onto the jack stands properly. I know you probably don't want to scuff up the rails, but when a jack fails it can be spectacular like all/nothing and its very very unpredictable what direction the car goes in (ask me how I know..), two inches in any direction and that's it if you are under it.

    Sorry about the issues dude, I have a dog ring Texas 101a box and using clutch can actually wear the dog rings more so decided to swap to a Richmond helical, keep the sequential top loader and use the clutch, I might go back to go back to dog box later but they are brutal

    Sorry you had a problem, and sorry about the expen$e. On the bright side, all your projects up til now, have looked like mostly aesthetic builds. They were show cars. This one is at least as good looking, but it also goes. And you're not just building a race car, you're actually racing it. That's fantastic! It's getting used for what you built it for!
    Ok, I never raced cars. I have raced gokarts, and I have road-raced 600 superstock motorcycles. The thing with racing equipment, when you use it, it's like burnout-cars, or drift cars. Things happen. Stuff goes wrong. That's part of the adventure. It does co$t money, but your dream isn't living on the mantelpiece, your dream is alive and doing what it was built to do. That's sort of a step up for Stance Works.
    My impression, you had the boost turned down, and you had well less than the redline revs on, so what happened? I thought you had a dry sump in that thing? If it wasn't a loss of oil supply, then what the hell was it? That engine should have been operating at maybe 1/3 of its' capacity at that point. They shouldn't let go under those circumstances. I'm very interested in finding out not only what broke, but why it broke.

    Undoubtedly some sort of stress cracking, which meant the big end came apart. Most likely the rod cap or wrist pin.
    I would recommend looking at some of the damping systems which can alleviate transient stresses and vibration. Brittleness is the enemy of strength for high-vibration / transient stress environments.

    Fuck. So sorry man but your positivity is inspiring. Ignore all the folk who have never even been on track saying that you're slow, never mind driven a self-built, big power mid-engined big aero car 😂 Heel and toe is on point ❤ Few observations you'll never read:
    1. Threadlock on all engine mount bolts always.
    2. Just watching the car you can tell the aero is working well but IMO the car needs to be lower.
    3. As per my comment on the last video I'd have concerns over IATs over consecutive laps. Do you have features setup within the ECU to (for example) pull timing should IATs rise?
    4. Doesnt matter what you do Porsches are always rolling road blocks on track 😂

    It’s a shame that that the motor blew. Sometimes these things aren’t preventable, it could have just been a fluke bad rod. However it’s my belief when something like this happens it’s the lesser of evils, the motor went so you didn’t oversteer the car into the wall or something! It happened for a reason! I’m looking forward to watching the breakdown and rebuild!
