What a wonderful homage to my favourite film star Ash. The words 'getting older is a gift which isn't afforded to everyone ' is a phrase I will keep with me.
In a documentary on Grant on BBC a couple of years ago it mentioned how his mother advised him if he only could afford one item of clothing to purchase the best siut available on his journey to the US. The fortunate fact for Mr Grant is, even outside of his style, Cary Grant would look dapper in a pair of overalls.

There is also one detail that makes a person stylish and respectful and that is posture and gestures. The way Cary and many other greats stood, walked, did any moves and talked it was with grace, elegance, confidence and self respect. Without that a person even bespokly dressed would look like a simpleton. Sure acting school helps but only to a degree.

the thing about grant was that he was a man of his times , the 30's , 40's, 50's and very early 60's , he did nothing different from anyone else he wore what everyone else was wearing , but he had a way , his own self confidence awareness his swagger because it was in his era that almost all men were fairly well dressed only few knew how to wear what they wore well , grant kept it basic and simple , if you at grant , flynn , power , bogart , cooper , Sinatra , kelly , nevin , peck , arnez Lancaster , dauglas , Quinn , rathbone , mason , march , all of the old throw downs of that era knew how to dress hell even in casual wear they had a cool look

Hi , He also had a mid-Atlantic accent, which was something special and natural to him, and not what some other actors were trying to learn, and this was very much in demand in Hollywood at that time, because American English was in fact not suitable for theater and cinema, and British English was somewhat heavy. The thing is, his tone was beautiful, very distinct, natural and not artificial.
Another point, I think that a lot of men look better when they get older.

One of my favorite things Cary Grant would do sometimes was button only the BOTTOM button of his jacket as if thumbing his nose at “fashion.” You have to know the rules to break them. Imagine having the great Edith Head as costume designer yet being fully trusted to style your own wardrobe and pulling off iconic original looks such as those of a high class criminal in “To Catch a Thief.” He found that striped sweater and red foulard in the French Riviera where they were filming. “When in Rome” as they say. Great content here as usual.

Your points remain extant. Look after yourself, age gracefully, dress timelessly.
As a man fast approaching 55, I'm still active and have clothes that still fit me that I purchased many years ago. I have my own hair, but it went grey in my mid-20s, I have also had it cut at a grade 1 length for over 3 decades (I do it myself).

What an icon, Cary Grant. I didn't consider him a great actor, unlike actors of previous generations. Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney. Stewart. But he played the part of a leading handsome man with grace, pernash and stile. That was his trademark. And Cary knew what God had given him, was to used it not abuse it. Unlike Erroll Flynn, who had charm and looks coming out of his boots, but distroyed himself in over-dulging in alcohol and tempering with drugs and wild sex party's; dying a few months before his 50th birthday. I enjoyed your podcast tremendously, Ash, perticulary your structure, vocabulary and your delivery it was perfect.

A truly fine video, Ash, and I heartily agree with everything you've said here. Brilliant! Even as a young boy, I remember watching Grant in films from the 30s and thought that was exactly how I wanted to dress. And I was fortunate enough to have parents who both worked in the high-fashion industry, so there was no lack of encouragement from them in this regard. I was certainly the only little boy in my neighbourhood who wore bowlers, homburgs, fedoras, or top hats! I daresay I aspired to dress like Cary Grant and dance like Fred Astaire (another world-class entertainer who was an impeccable dresser). But as you suggest, I think having even only a fraction of that level of style can make us all feel like a million pounds. Cheers!

Thank you Ash for making a video of my #1 style icon Cary Grant. I truly enjoyed it a lot. Thank you for the suit detail from the movie North by Northwest. I did not know that Cary Grant bough a suit at Savile Row and had copies made in the US. I have heard that the suit was the actual star in that movie and not Cary Grant.
From a style standpoint, my goal is to have a versatile, timeless style and wardrobe. Cary Grant is a great example in achieving this objective.
In addition, I want to age gracefully. My hair is gone. This started early as I was 24 years old. I just turned 46 years old in January. I came to terms with my hair loss. My approach is: It is not important what you have on your head. It is more important what you have in your head.

  • @RaoulKunz1
    @RaoulKunz1 Před 4 měsíci

Very nice presentation on a true icon!
The fact that his style remains so "current" - for the lack of a better word - I feel is rooted in the fact that he drew inspiration from "classical" menswear of the 20s and 30s and just wore it in a a less interbellum style and with more of a postbellum simplicity and thus remains, like all styles of classical menswear, timeless and relevant for our age.
Ironically enough I would firmly concur with the vigilance about once shape - says a bloke who looks *way* more like Edward VII than Grant bur hear me out (it's all about the health)!
I'm a Crohn's patient and thus are actually pretty happy when I manage to stay in this chubby form and not (once again) loose something like 80 pounds in a month and the key to this is constant vigilance (some would call it paranoia😅) about my shape, being unshapely as it is🤣.
...plus I'd have to get my entire wardrobe to the alterations tailor🤣...
As for hair.... my late father started to *heavily* dye his hair (way darker than I *and photographs* remembered from his younger years...) in his late 40s... I'd call it "Schröderizing" his hair, following the then German chancellor Schröder who got into fights with journalists about that...
I won't do this, I personally *love* my grey and silver areas (and I got them really early, in my mid 20s), it looks *good* I feel and I get told.
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

I remember Cary Grant. well. I could never emulate him. I do not have his assets. But I do consider him a mentor in my wardrobe collection. I liked your disruption of his using duplicate suits for close ups and distance filming, I once read where he learned that from an actress named Mae West. She was a actress known for having two of every dress in the movie. One for moving in and one for sitting in. Designed to be subtly different to enhance her appearance in either situation. Cary would have his knock off suits let out a bit to enhance his athletic and action scenes the be standing still in the next scene all Saville Row. Many people now days forget his wonderful comic timing and skill sets.
I seem to observe King Charles still wears many of his older suits. Using the same lessons.

Cary Grant looked great in a grey flannel suit. But those shorts? Mmmmm........let's just say that look hasn't aged quite so well. Also keep in mind the fact that men, of all ages, tend to look better in the sort of monochrome (ie. black and white) photography that was prevalent during most of Grant's career.
Take away the lessons. But live your own life, and find your own style.

Hi ash I just have a style question. what do you think of wearing a tie but with the top button undone? . In formal settings yeah, wear a necktie with all buttons fastened but in a casual setting like around town. I have been experimenting with wearing a tie but with the top button undone. I seen DR who 14th DR outfit where the actor's costume shirt top unbutton and a knit tie on. I have been trying this with some of my ties with oxford & poplin shirts. I don't think flannel, linen,or brush twill shirts will look good with a tie but who knows?
I think knit ties work best but I also like wearing repp/stripes, glen check, hounds tooth too & I mostly go for silk but wool can do too. I know it's a bit costumey but I think I can pull it off better with a sweater over it.

I personally think that a tie sits better with a fully buttoned shirt, but if you are aiming for a specific look, I don't see why not!

As regards Mr. Cruise - did anyone see “Collateral?” Cruise dresses in a grey suit and tie to match his salt-and-pepper hair, and looks GREAT. Maybe he stole that look from Cary Grant.

The one thing i think men should not neglect are their teeth, you see people in the street with missing or discoloured teeth. Having a bad tooth capped isn’t that expensive and makes a hell of a difference to your appearance. But i would avoid veneers as they stand out as false.

9:09 I hope you're not insisting that anyone over the age of 50 who has the same colour hair as someone half their age must be artificially colouring their hair and looks 'odd'. I am a similar age to you and I have the same colour hair as I had as a child (auburn brunette) with no more than about 7 grey hairs in total on my head. It is very unusual but people who really never go grey do exist. Both my parents had that gene. I recall meeting a man, again, of a similar age professionally about 4 years ago and it was obvious to me that his hair colour was natural like mine. He had a slightly darker shade of brown hair and also had no discernible grey hair at all.

Speaking as a woman who appreciates a well-dressed man, a man having less or no hair does not detract from his attraction whatsoever. A man who accepts that he is losing his hair and has it cut accordingly, or even is bald, says to me that the chap is confident and comfortable with his stage in life. I wouldn't form a romantic relationship with the hair dyer / hair transplanter because that tells me he is insecure, and possibly would bring with him a whole raft of more serious issues. There are plenty of sexy and elegant grey haired and bald men.

When you lose pigmentation in the hair you also lose it in the skin, so if you taint your head, the result is that you accentuate the contrast.

Many women make this mistake, too. I don't know why they can't see how odd it looks. On the other hand, I've seen people dye their hair a softer, lighter color and it looks very good. I know one woman who had very dark hair at twenty, but at 50, she dyes her hair a soft medium brown and it looks completely natural.

Not sure about Cary Grant being timeless and the "best dressed". Even the video thumbnail image shows him wearing a super skinny tie and over-extended/padded shoulders which I think haven't aged well but were the fashion of the day. Roger Moore is in the same category. David Niven may be a better example. It's not easy to pick a best-dressed of all time - I need to think about that :)

Magnificent video and tribute to the great Cary Grant. I think these two words describe him perfectly: "effortless elegance".
PS: Tom Cruise was/is a mediocre actor who only succeeded thanks to his boyish good looks. The way he is desperately clinging to his (long gone) youth is pathetic and laughable.

I don't agree, Erich Honecker was very well dressed and groomed, at his official portrait of 1976, he wore a nice suit jacket and a nice looking shirt and a very beautiful looking necktie; tied in a windsor, also his hair was very well done in a sober way, in it's total; he looked, in general, very sober but beautifully, I liked his style very much!

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  Před 2 měsíci

I have seen that image. The tie worn by Honecker was interesting, but the man was a dictator, accused of non judicial murders, who died in exile in Chile. Hardly a role model to follow.

Ash, in the opening seconds of this video, you have inadvertently spelt `STYLE'' with two `T`s. Great content, and good advice. Cary Grant didn’t just sport the same standard haircut down the decades, he was always pictured freshly shaven, and when you look at his hands, the fingernails are clean and well trimmed. His grooming was immaculate. You rightly criticise cosmetic things people do to try and look younger, and I agree that in many instances the results can be far worse than the natural ageing they attempt to hide. However, I see nothing wrong with good regular dentistry and orthodontics if your smile is a big let-down. My dentist is additionally very critical of the smokers he sees. Apart from prematurely ageing our skin, what it does to our teeth and oral health, let alone the rest of our bodies, is a disaster. Lastly, few things are less flattering for any ageing man (or woman), who wants to look stylish, than being overweight, and generally out of shape physically. We cannot change our height or our age, and we are all stuck with the face and body we were born with. We don’t have to be a wealthy movie star to make the best of our existing facial features…and simple diet plus regular exercise can make a significant improvement to the physical body frame upon which we wear our stylish clothes.
