Maru has been revolutionizing TvT for a decade. It is so crazy to see this in 2024 and remember his games versus Innovation in the early 2010s. What a display of brilliance!
Zerg has been and still is broken, mainly do to being able to remax in seconds mid/ late game you have to be able to defeat 2 to 3 armies with your one army
Maru just smashed the TvT meta with that game one. Not too surprising, but still amazing to see. The siege tank raven disable 2 base push that was TVT and Maru was like "nah im just gonna make a bunch of vikings and kill all his ravens."
I have seen this on ladder before the final, but it was by a barcode Terran on NA, they also where much more aggressive with the tanks where as Maru choose to use them to defend his expansions. Other than that identical strategy, just without the APM of Maru it didn't look nearly as formidable, was honestly wondering what the other Terran was even thinking.
Be honest, do you guys ever feel the same way when watching maru compared to watching serral? Everytime I watch maru it feels like he's always doing something absolutely insane. Dont get me wrong, Serral is amazing too but with the zerg race it just feels overwhelming, almost like he starts off with an advantage. Hard to explain
Maru is amazing, but Serral is just suffocating to play against. Zerg has been nerfed over the last few years and ZvT is in a very good state, but Serral continues to find ways to dominate. He has the best scouting in the game, is always aware of what's going on and always makes the right decisions in how to respond and dismantle his opponent. You watch other zergs go into late game against a turtle terran in a split map scenario these days and they have so much trouble breaking through the defense. Serral is the one who will find a way to crack the nut. Plus his late game army control is second to none, so he trades way more efficiently than other zergs. All of this is coming from a Maru fan. I've seen Maru make plenty of next level miracle plays, but overall I just don't think his game is as tightly polished. He's also constantly managing an injury, which definitely drags down his level of play, especially in weekender tournaments where he's got to play a lot. That being said, Maru is way more fun to watch since he's more flashy and gets behind regularly, only to fight his way back. Both are great players, but Serral just plays at a slightly higher level.
Serral in his games vs Maru basically makes Maru look like what Maru made Cure look like this match - an incredible player who's just not on the same level. Like Maru is amazing, but dominating everyone year round just to get swept 4-0 by Serral at IEM Katowice really goes to show how insane Serral truly is at this game.
@@thesoundofsilence77 You're not wrong with the first statement but I think Serrals domination speaks to more the zerg race more than anything. I don't mean to start balance whining but Zerg has won every world championship since 2017 and won 60-65% of premier tournaments in the same timeframe. All of these wins aren't just serral. He is amazing but I think he happens to be the best zerg player at a time when zerg is the most favoured race. Does that make him truly better than maru or hero? Hard to say.
I think one could compare Serral to Innovation in his period of domination. He's just barely making mistakes, barely taking uncalculated risks, always refining his already impeccable play more and more. Meanwhile Maru is very often going for crazy aggressive attacks trying to find just the edge between doing damage and just throwing his units away. He's also testing new compositions and tech trees all the time which can make for overwhelming and/or brilliantly looking victories but also sometimes for kind of stumbling losses. This main difference is emphasized by two factors: 1) The characteristics of their races. Zerg simply is the more reactive fraction in the game while terran can manoeuvre small hit squads with versatile micro potential to great damage. 2) The main environment of their competition. Serral has to play almost exclusively weekend tournaments. There is little time for preparation for single opponents and thus it's important to hone a style which is suitable in general. Maru on the other hand has always played in GSL and in proleague back then where preparation is key. It's beneficial to think of very specific builds for very specific opponents. This is a great style but it's less effective in order to develop an overall perfectly rounded approach to the game that fares well on almost every occasion. It really would be interesting what would happen if Maru played more often against Serral or if they met frequently in a more preparation based setting. In theory Maru and others should be able to find holes in Serrals play and to force him to diversify his play. If Serral still dominated, he would be even more exceptional than he already is.
@@rat2244 I disagree. Serral has been dominating the world for the better part of the last 6 years, in all different patches when Zerg was both favored and not favored. The most recent IEM Katowice where he went 20-1 had 5 Terrans in the ro8 lol. And 60-65%? Where are you getting that math from? And if so, how much of it is or isn't attributed to Serral? He's won more premier tournaments since the beginning of 2023 than almost all other players have combined lmao, of course Zerg win percentage is massively inflated because of him. You're definitely alone on that hill suggesting his dominance is attributed to him playing Zerg more than anything else, that's ridiculous
That 3rd game was nuts. The viking tank BC combo looks like it shouldn't work - it almost gave Cure a chance to comeback in game 1 and Maru was dead in the water in game 3. However, as a spectator, you have to hand it to Maru to provide us with entertaining games. His repertoire of Terran styles in all matchups is truly second to none.
"Oh, my enemy is going Battle Cruiser? Let me continue to make Marauders!" WHAT WAS CURE THINKING?!?!?! In game 1 ok, but to do it again in game 3? Why not go into Battle Cruisers as well??
Thats easier said than done. You dont snap your finger and have 5 BCs showing up. You have to build up the production, tech and upgrade for the units. Cure decided that he would kill Maru before Maru can reach mass BC counts, so he went all-in into Bio and Medivac. He could have decided to match Maru by teching-up into BCs as well, but he might not feel confident about that.
I still remember when Maru first came unto the scene and was the first to do a perfect marine split vs zerg with everyone thinking he was dead This game reminded me of that perfect player, completely zoned in
When Maru is behind, it’s even. When Maru is even, he’s ahead. When Maru is ahead, you already lost. 🐐
That’s how I feel whenever I watch his games.
I always give Maru a chance when he’s behind since the game is even at the point.

Yeah. Maru behind 40 supplies? No biggie
Heard it first from Winter, is he the source?

People can talk about serral as much as they want, Maru is the most fun player of all time.
Zerg has been and still is broken, mainly do to being able to remax in seconds mid/ late game you have to be able to defeat 2 to 3 armies with your one army
One of the best TvTs ever!

Such a great series. Such a cool new style of TvT. Not very often we see styles so new in SC2.
Now I just want Maru to win the world championship 1 time.
Maru is the GOAT! - greatest level I've seen him play at, I think ever.
Spoiler Block. GSL!!!
Read to roar! Ready to rock! Ready to give it all I’ve got!
Thank you!
Cure was like: WTF am I doing here...
The Games are sooooo good, Thanks GSL
I find it hard So believe how good of a cater state has become .Really the Yin to the Yang
Maru is the best TvT player for a reason. When he's on his game, he's basically invincible
He is still the best TvT despite they nerfed his Raven style last year.
State casting on point, he's incredible
I have to learn Maru build order in the first and the third game. Very cool.
maru is crazy
Damn Maru played well
Wow, never ever seen such a TvT strategy before. Bravo to the winner !! The best TvT ive ever seen !!
Thst first game was craaaaazy!
Jesus Maru
Those were nutty games
I recently watched a few good hours of ASL and that Maru mine in game 2 scouting the push reminded me of how people use Vulture mines in SC1.
wish it was longer
After a decade of boring ass MMM, it's sooo refreshing to see Maru use a bomb ass new style!!!
Only TY can beat Maru in TvT, this was inevitable, but awesome to watch!
Those games we crazy! Actually can't believe the third game.
Last game was crazy!

47:31 new unit unlocked
omg, what a game!!!
Crushed him all 3 games. The 3rd game was lost long ago at 48 mins cure push kills a bc. Literally only reason game didnt end 1 2 mins later.
This was the first time I saw a medivac pick up a landed Viking xD
TvT maru is now my favorite
Game 1 Maru looked like he was playing Atlas+Evac from Stormgate: they drop out sieged and shoot immediately.
Cure in pre-game interview: "I need to stop thinking I'm playing against Maru and just think I'm playing against another Terran player" :D
5:40 and 6:55 , what does the "GSL1 GSL2 ST1 ST2" stand for?
It's their results in 2023 GSL tournaments. GSL Seasons 1 & 2 and Supertournaments 1 & 2
GSL1 = 1st place in Code S, GSL 2 = 2nd place in code S. Similarly are the 1st and 2nd place for Super Tournament.
battleship~
geegee
Spiler bicker
Match 1 7:48
42:01 caster park sounding so funny in the background :D
47:28 drop💩
The whole BC harass starting 53:00 until 56:00 is so disgusting. Lmao
Cure forgot turrets existed
I really like this new Maru style. MMM spam is tiresome and I really like BC in particular.

Great commentary, but please State, talk a little bit less much, leave some space!
What a pathetic showing by Cure today.
