Good times with Troi! Also, you can't fake metal polishing. Theres only one way to get it done, hard work. Keep it weird y'all #shadetreearmy
When Shadetree polishes aluminum off camera he lights candles and plays Barry White.đ
Hey Josh, another shop tip.
For anodized parts, you can use oven cleaner to remove the anodizing. It takes off the color, while leaving the smooth finish of the aluminum in place. This allows one to move right to the polishing grits of sandpaper so you don't have to "refinish" the aluminum surface from marks of the rough grit or wire wheel used to remove color.
However, don't leave oven cleaner on too long or it burns the metal.
Just long enough to remove the ano.
This most often saves a lot of time. But it ALWAYS saves tons of labor!
I also recommend, 1.5-2K grit as your final sanding grit. Won't need as much machine polishing and hand polishing to remove the sanding marks.
Cheers!
Troy seems like a good, cool dude! Anybody discreetly hip thrusting Shadetree's camera on his bike is all right by me!
When Shadetree said âand we have a real live black guy from Alabamaâ I literally laughed out loud while my wife looked at me like Iâm stupid đ€·đ»ââïž

I used to be a VW guy & always dug the old illustrated manual "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" - Cycle Monster's book looks like a cooler version for bikes. I dig it!
a guy eating barbecue while wearing a camo Waffle House trucker hat is probably the most Southern thing I've seen all week.
Hope we are going to see more of Troy...He's a great addition to the crew.
This brings back memories of repairing damaged stainless steal trim. (sheet metal). First you have to make the basic repair, usually with a hammer and some kind of buck. Then you have to file down to the right shape. Then you have to sand, starting from 80 and working down to 1500. Then you can start with the sisal wheel and a course compound. Last you can finally start with the buffer wheel and finer compound. It's usually right about at that time when I catch an edge on the buffer and the whole thing gets wrapped around the axle of the machine. After you realize you're lucky to still be alive.............you get to start from the beginning!

Polishing is a lot of work but worth it. Those who canât readily see the difference from chrome, and have never polished aluminum to that shine, can never appreciate it and the satisfaction that comes from doing it. Nice work, It looks good. The book looks awesome as well. Keep up the good content.
Was in mid 60s here today (Charlotte) so just wanted to get the bike ('19 Fury) out to circulate its juices as its going to be cold next week. I figured 30ish miles. Turned into 110 miles lol. Happy Thanksgiving everyone
"Rub out all the imperfections in my life..." Worked for me since I was like 10.
Scotch Brite with some auto polish works great for polishing aluminum. Also Mothers aluminum polish works good. You did a awesome job.
That throttle twist at 6:00 made me scream vicariously... and now I'm grinning lol
Those risers are looking good. I love your videos and it's not a Shadetree video without getting lost on the way to get lunch. Thanks for sharing and I can't wait until the next video. Keeping it weird as well.
"Shit apple doesnt fall far from the shit tree" Shadetree obviously has watched the trailer park boys đ€Ł
Definitely vibrating tumbler machines with different types of material for polishing. But the old fashioned way is a lot cooler đ€
Wet sanding is the way to go when polishing. It helps keep the sanding more uniform as well as prolonging the life of your abrasive paper. Another tip is, to use a product called Simichrome It's a German made jewelry polishing rouge and it REALLY takes the cake over Flitz and all those other polishes on the market. But remember....a lot goes a long way! then once polished, WAX THE PARTS!!! And wax them regularly to keep them from dulling over time. Awesome job Josh! Cheers! Zip~
Damn that cycle monster book is sick! It reminds me of the "How to keep your Volkswagen alive forever" book.
I had the ol' 'Complete Idiots Guide To Volkswagen Maintenance' back when Volkswagen parts were laying around everywhere.
Metal polishing is a art. I once polished the frame and swingarm on my busa I used race. It was a winter project. Nice work on the risers!!
Happy Thanksgiving Shadetree Army!!

Polish looks better than chrome IMO. It isn't as reflective but looks deeper. I think it is easy to tell the difference, even with a good polish job, the chrome is different.
Hey Josh, for the final final on any metal, try a Cape Cod polishing cloth. Works like a dream on everything from a Gold Rolex, Stainless anything, Aluminum, and others. They also leave a protective layer of whatever to keep it from oxidizing.
I get goosebumps just watching sanding.... đŹ looks great though. +10 respect for the effort!
Wish I had a couple hours I could give ya so pointers on how to save time and energy doing that polishing stuff. You need some abrasive wheels and some heavier buffs and it doesn't take too much time like doing the sandpaper thing . I am an old time chrome shop rat did metal prep for almost 15 years. Ate a lot of polishing compound an along the way but loved the end product ground a few fingers but loved seeing the end product. Old school choppers. Pan heads. Knuckle heads. You get it
That polish came out looking sharp on those risers.
I had Cracker Barrel biscuits and gravy today for lunch! Lol
As an old triumph guy I can appreciate hand polished aluminum, looks great
Shiiiiit, it's gonna be a looooong winter until I get my Heritage back on the road from the winter storage. In the meanwhile I'll watch (jealously) Shadetree crew riding their bikes.
I agree with ya Josh nothing like pure polished aluminum. Try to coat it or anything and it ruined. People just canât figure that out! A little polish once in a while and your good!!
Told my sons GF that I would make fresh biscuits and gravy with fresh sausage from pigs I raise for meat. For breakfast Saturday morning. I still cook in cast iron as things taste so much better. Good on you for helping Cheyleesi so much! You are a great guy!!
NICE JOB on the polishing bro. That looks great!
I really enjoyed the video, brother. Those risers came out so nice. The hard work truly paid off! Thanks for taking us along, Josh!
I polished metal for a living .Get several grits of polish and wheels for each grit. Wider wheels cut/polish much faster and they don't groove your part as bad.( I.E. Wavy finish on larger parts.) The reason polished aluminum is so expensive is it's a lot of work. We did mostly motorcycle parts and guns. Polished, Nickel, copper and chrome.
My friends dad has sold multiple cars to Jacoby from Papa Roach. Funny you said that. And the Colonel Klink comparison was hilarious.
Itâs actually Sargent Schultz. But yeah...
Hey Josh..Jean here from Ontario Canada here.im with ya on the publishing thing .as i have an 81 honda Twinstar 200 that i have removed all of its factory coating on the engine that just wears off and or streaks as time goes on.one year back in the early 90s or after 1992 as thats when i got it .i started sanding that coating off, i started with 600 then worked my way up to 2000 then the autosolve ,then high speed polish ,so iv done most of thee engine ,at least what i could get to ,and i did the fork sleeve as well ,now to keep it up, ill do the high speed polish at least once a year, i dont need to water sand unless i need to remove a scratch or blemishes . So to keep those riser up, you'ed or Shay should only need to use a good chrome polish like Autosolve or mothers with that ball buffer on the drill. oh and if i may boste, my little Twinstar has taken home 5 or 6 awards for my efforts..lol oh say next time you give something a polish instead or using water to wetsand and you should be using water to wetsand ,try using a lubricant like w-d or equivalent ..so its link spray ,sand ,spray sand .. as you work your way up the grades.see if that works for you.
Can I offer a tip?
The TC Bros. parts were kinda shiny out of the gate. If parts look like that then hit it with the polishing wheel then chrome&mag polish.
Using sandpaper is putting scratches in it for no reason. If you have to sand into it at all use Scotchbrite pads. Also donât press the sanding material to the surface, let the pad(or paper) glide and do the work for you. Travel in one direction when youâre sanding not backwards, forwards and up&down and around. Also use a block whether flat (or rounded for grooves, etc.) Using your fingers and hands will create grooves in what youâre sanding into.
Glad to see chey wearing gloves!
I got a little excited watching Josh make things shiny.
Happy Thanksgiving all!
Hooah
When it comes to riding motorcycles, take it from an old guy -- enjoy, enjoy, enjoy, while you're young! Good stuff from TC Bros! Those polished aluminum risers are ACE! Great work, Josh! While I'm a big fan of chrome, the aforementioned can seem a bit cold and sterile at times. Polished aluminum has a "warm" sheen to it. A good Thanksgiving Day 2020 for you guys in FLA. -- Walt Greybeard on The North Coast (Cleveland, OH).
That cycle monster looks like a comic book for people like me who know nothing about turning wrenches. I should pick one up!
I work with anodizing aluminum and there's a process called bright dipping where it chemically polishes the aluminum to a mirror finish after it's already been mechanically buffed. I'd reach out to some aluminum anodizers in your area to see if they be willing to bright dip those parts for you to take the mirror finish to a whole new level. Then you could at least get it clear anodized too to protect the aluminum from oxidizing and deteriorating structurally, just my $0.02 though.
Reminds me of John Muir's How to keep your Volkswagen Alive. đVery cool.
That biscuit place looks awesome
I wish we had a local shop like The Road Factory in our area. You represent each other perfectly. Troy knows an awesome ride when he sees it and isnât afraid to ask for more. We love watching you having a good time with your many friends. Polishing your parts, is that a Beavis and Butthead joke? The joke goes with Tonyâs shirt. Donât give me a hard time about commenting early, Iâm still watching.
hey Josh, love your videos as always, especially the food breaks! Not to be critical but I've done plenty of polishing in my day, and i think you initially started with too coarse a grit on your first piece. You want a grit that's just finer than the finest striations/texture on the item you start with. Aluminum being much softer than steel, it makes for a faster job if one can sort that out first. Cheers, my man!
Start a patreon just for Troi to come to Florida once a month and film with you guys
Maple Tree Biscuit Company. Reminds me the of the Maple Tree Inn in Simsbury CT. When I was a teen growing up when our parents would throw us out of the house we used to rent rooms at the maple tree. It was a flop house upstairs, where we slept on cum stained mattresses and a biker bar downstairs. It was heaven. They don't rent rooms anymore but the bar has been Gentrified. Something I learned from polishing aluminum, keep stepping up to at least 4K grit sandpaper. Higher if you plan on putting on a sealer after polish.
hey Josh, I've just recently started watching all these vids ya'll have been putting out there. Really enjoy them, so thanks! My old scoot (78 iron) had zero chrome on it, just nothing but aluminum. I used to use jeweler's rouge and a polishing pad on my drill. man that stuff really makes a mirror finish on everything. anyway, keep up the vids!!
I'm a knife guy. More than that I'm a sharpening nerd. And while I don't care for my blade to be super polished, I do polish the edge. But I do that with stones. But you sure can sharpen a knife on sandpaper and compound! I know what wemt into thst and you sir did a bang up job!
I guess I'm old school, but Chrome is the look on a bike I fell in love with back in the 70's. The Easy Rider movie and Dennis Hoppers Bike did it for me.

I enjoy your videos excellent work on the metal polishing I like that too.
If you stick those bars in a dish washer it will strip the anodizing off . May take a couple runs but saves lots of work
Gimme the Scotchbrite scuff over polish. Very Russell Whatsisname I know, but industrial-minimal helps my 'T' levels, at least in my tiny, closed mind.
Cool..that Cycle monster book is a very similar style to a DIY VW maintenance handbook I had back in the early 70's ..had a '65 Beetle and it was basically a 'VW maintenance for Dummies' ..had everything you needed to know illustrated in the same style and very easy to understand...good to know the tradition has been carried over to motorcycles.
