  • So....HTTYD....it has to be Dreamworks' best franchise right? I've been doing a lot of thinking about the various different Dreamworks properties in the last couple of weeks...thinking about Shrek, and Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda...and whilst all of these franchises do have a lot of merit....I think it is clear that one stand above the rest...watch to find out more.

    I still believe HTTYD is the best Animated movie franchise ever, taking into account all 3 movies, which despite the sequels never quite reaching the level of heart touching that the first one did, they still were both spectacular movies, and while i didnt feel quite as strongly for the 3rd movie, it made me cry for like 20 minutes, a mere 5 minutes less than the first movie, which made me cry for 25 minutes in total. yes im a baby and i like crying when watching movies, makes it feel like the movie actually touched me in the heart. i loved all 3 movies, and consider them the best animated movie franchise ever.

    HTTYD really doesn't compare as a franchise in my opinion. (we're not gonna talk about the new spin off series that don't involve the main story, first of which is not even cannon) From the movies to the shows and shorts, there was so much effort put in to tell a really beautiful story. Although the third movie was rather disappointing, I think if there had just been a few more tweaks to the script it would have been perfect. The animation was still top notch, and you can tell they still tried really hard to tell a compelling final instalment to the story.
    In all, the entire franchise furthers the story in a really cohesive way, no show, short, or movie just there for the sake of it (well except maybe Legend of the Boneknapper--still love that short though). I don't think people can say that for a lot of other franchises. Kung Fu Panda as a trilogy is HTTYD's best contender, but once you look at the shows and shorts, there's really no competition in my opinion.

    • @jtanimeandnerd101
      @jtanimeandnerd101 Před 2 lety +5

      @@SuperPlacido1 Sorry, I didn't elaborate. What I mean is that in all the previous movies and series, Hiccup and Toothless worked to show that the world and Dragons could co exist. And they proved it on multiple occasions. So for all the Dragons to just decide to go to the Hidden World felt like Hiccup just gave up. Because the reality is that humanity will never fully be ready for dragons and what the movie should have shown is that that's the reality humans and Dragons will just have to learn to live in. Plus there are probably many others dragons outside the archipelago, so it really made no sense to why all the dragons went to the Hidden World. Finally, considering it showed Drago's Bewilderbeast for a brief second, it felt like Drago was supposed to come back. But for some reason, they changed the story giving us a less impactful villain and a cliffhanger ending from HTTYD2 that never panned out.

    The main problem I have with httyd is the ending. I mean, I guess they wanted to explain why there were no Dragons in the real world, except or gave the message that when you face prejudice the best thing to do is to run and hide and wait for humanity to somehow accept something they're not accustomed to. I mean hiccup sons reaction to the dragons not to mention their attitudes in the short afterwards shows how flawed that way of thinking is.

      @Amy Holland since when has being faithful to the source been a priority for this franchise?

    • @thedarkangel613
      @thedarkangel613 Před 2 lety +3

      @Amy Holland 1) they never adhered to the source material. The only thing the took were character names and that’s it. so it’s not really a book adaptation.
      2) it’s states in the first movie that humans have been maimed and killed by dragons too so I don’t agree giant flying lizards with innate protective tools are more at risk than humans. If we compare it to the real world we do have some endangered animals so Maybe some smaller dragons would be at risk but there are some huge species out there. And even the endangered species we don’t separate from humans to fix the problem. So all dragons being at risk compared to humans seem far fetched
      3) you see a lot of dragons in the hidden world. At least I did
      4) main point: watching other media to explain this media doesn’t make it better. I liked the tv shows but they don’t give anymore insight in to why they left other than there are more trappers but the dragons still didn’t leave. So this movie just seems like everyone was fed up with fighting and decided it’s easier to cut their losses. The books again are so different from the movies that you cant use that story to explain this one because they are not connected. There is no Astrid (there’s Camikazi), dragons talk, snoutlot dies a heroic death. None of that is in the movies but connect to the book version of hiccups story. Even the explanation an execution for the dragons leaving are completely different
      Most people have a problem that dragons leave at the end of the franchise and that makes it bad. I don’t. I’ve seen plenty of satisfying stories of long time mates having to separate sometimes forever. This movie just did not justify why they ALL had to leave

    • @schon2395
      @schon2395 Před 2 lety +1

      @Thegravedigger0
      I think you're missing the point. They didn't give up, they realized that the thing they've been fighting for is impossible, do you actually expect humans as a species to accept another animal species that's fairly intelligent sit next to them on top of the food chain? After they've been fighting/killing/exploiting said animals for centuries at that point? If Berk had kept their dragons more hunters would show up, and then more, then more, then more, etc. It's a never ending cycle, Hiccup realized this and tried to hide from the rest of the world, guess what? Still found them. Humans will stop at nothing to remain at the top of the food chain.
      So what do you do in this situation? Continue to fight a never ending battle? Or accept reality? Hiccup was so busy fighting for a world that *he* wanted, he didn't think about what Toothless (and all the dragons) *needed.* Sending the dragons to the Hidden World is the best scenario here, both Berk and the dragons will no longer be attacked/hunted, and just because they're separated doesn't mean they can't visit either. Hiccup & Toothless have simply become adult friends that visit during the holidays.

    The thing that really puts HTTYD above KFP for me is that it is much more effective as a trilogy, you can see Hiccup grow and he makes decisions he could not have made in the previous movies. I just think his coming-of-age storyline is constructed really well.
    In KFP all the movies are great on their own but combining them doesn't really add much. Not taking Po's power growth into account the movies are very swappable, he just faces a villain, learns a lesson and does that again. I don't feel that the Po at the end of the third movie is all that different then the one at the start.
    In summary, I just think that the phrase: "The whole is more than the sum of its parts" is very applicable in the case of HTTYD and not so much for KFP which elevates it for me.

    HTTYD is something I’ll never tire from watching. It will always tug on my heart strings and make me wish that I was in that universe. The way I can relate to many of the characters, the way they help one another, the music, emotion, story, characters, it all comes together to make an incredible franchise. I will never understand why Dean Deblois and DreamWorks decided to end Hiccup and Toothless’ story and create The Nine Realms. They could’ve gotten a lot more from the source material.

    The interesting thing to note is the second and third films were going to be much different had early screenings of the second movie not ruined that.
    Drago and his Bewilderbeast was never going to be in the second movie, just his army referring to him in fear. When the army learned of Hiccup, they would have attacked Valka's mountain. Valka would have responded by thinking Hiccup and Stoick had been distracting her. As a result, she would unleash the Alpha, cause Stoick's death, and attack Berk, blaming them for everything.
    Think of how Grimmel was handled in the third movie, but that instead is when Drago would have shown up, along with the reveal of his cloak being Night Fury scales. The parallels between Hiccup and Drago in the second film would have been cemented with Drago's explanation of killing a Night Fury as a child.
    But all that got thrown out because kids were crying over how they didn't like Hiccup's mon being bad so Dreamworks forced Dean to change the second half of the second movie.

    personally, while I love all 3 movies, as well as all shorts and series, I seem to be in a minority in that I prefer the 3rd movie over the 2nd (possibly above the 1st as well but less conclusive), which is a a little conflicting for me since the Bewilderbeast is one of my top favourite Dragons in this franchise. The reasons for that might be more surface level than truly profound, but I stand by them.
    This is most likely influenced by the fact that Astrid is my favourite (human) character, Stormfly is one of my top favourite Dragon characters, along with the fact that her species, the Deadly Nadder, are another one of my top favourite Dragon species, if not the number 1 (I think you can guess my favourite Dragon/rider pair from this 😏), but the biggest shortcoming of the 2nd movie to me, is how Astrid (as well as her relationship with Hiccup) and the other riders (and all their Dragons with colourful personalities) are basically relegated to the side-lines throughout most of the film in regards to the main story, along with being given basically (if not literally) no part in the final battle, unlike the battle against the Red Death in the 1st movie; something the 3rd movie rectifies very well, from Fishlegs bringing the baby Gronkle to battles, to Tuffnut providing very bad wedding pep-talks to Hiccup, to Snotlout's hilarious jealousy towards Eret, and Astrid (and Stormfly) being much more involved in the main story (I also love the fact that we are shown the Hidden World while riding Stormfly instead of Toothless as might have been expected, almost like a roles-revered Romantic Flight scenario), everyone of them gets a real chance to shine, rather than solely Hiccup and Toothless. This I think shows in this final battle especially, with Hiccup entrusting them to rescue the Dragons from the warlords, while he goes on a more personal-stakes, but still critical, mission to rescue Toothless and the Light Fury from Grimmel.

    How To Train Your Dragon 2 is my absolute favourite movie of the three. The 3rd I haven’t see all the way through because it’s end is tough for me to watch and the 1st one I have a bit of difficulty with because for ME AT LEAST I’m not that big of a fan of movies that showcases characters almost being busted and something very bad happen to them. Like I just get worried with Hiccup being discovered to have befriended a dragon and then being kick off Berk island for not being a dragon hater. Or Ratatouille where I’m worried about Linguine being discovered with Remy and Remy would get killed and Linguine would be fired and had to find work somewhere else.

    I’m finna say the hottest take ever along with a non controversial take. I think that how to train your is 100% the best dreamworld franchise and that I don’t like shrek all that much. I liked the first one but for some reason I could never like the second one. The third is just terrible and the fourth is honestly my favorite because it took the shrek franchise in a different direction. My second favorite franchise is kung fu panda

    I love How to Train your Dragon, but I raise you this: The 2-movie mini-franchise of bible adaptations DreamWorks did. Prince of Egypt and King of Dreams are absolute masterpieces.

    LOTR is the BEST franchise of all time. Nothing can ever beat it.
    But Dragons and King Fu Panda are probably the best animated franchises of all time. Or at least close

    I don’t get what people are on about that Hiccup was bewailing in the finale? Feels more like a excuse to say it was bad which is really cheap imo.
    Speaking of that, I find it weird how people don’t ever say he was more unlikeable in the second as he is the one to truly blame for Stoick’s demise. He clearly had way too much chutzpah and was not intelligent enough to acknowledge his dad’s warning that a megalomaniacal and murderous warlord is someone you should not try and reason with, instead he just omits the warning and goes on to help try pacify with Bludvist. This even happens after the Valka’s Bewilderbeast is killed and after Drago orders his men to kill Valka. Yes, kill Hiccup’s long lost mother, and Hiccup himself still thinks it’s a perfect opportunity to reason with him. And look what happens.
    It’s not like I dislike tenacious characters, Hiccup is this character throughout the whole franchise, and it’s part of his character arc where he learns to persevere or release whatever he is holding onto as part of maturity. But he goes a bit far fetched when ignoring his dad’s important warning

      the Kfp franchise use plot armors better because they foreshadowed it before the next bad things that will happen.
      And they gave KFP villains PLOT armor too.Which is better.
      Like it's the sense of reality that made KFP better.

    I finally watched the video instead of bullying commenters, i must say, man you care too much about what Rotten Dick-matoes has to to say, and Shrek 4 is underrated, and tbh, nah Kung fu Panda is the best DreamWorks franchise, mainly because i disagree heavily with your opinion on the third how to train your Dragon, that shits BAD

    HTTRD 1 & 2? Legendary
    3?
    .....no. it's a sad fart.
    And I watched the spin off series' following hiccup between movie 1 and 2. Which were AMAZING. So sad that it wasn't about the nightfurys, and instead was about the "king of dragons" [...yay....😧] but the 2 shows were such a blast to watch and i truly wish Vigo had been the final boss instead. It would hav meant so much more.
    KP never jelled with me. It was just so.....Jack black as a panda. I liked 2 and some parts of 3, but not the same way as EVERY character in HTTYD
