      hi guys in my experience there is nothing more useful to scare intruders than light and sound, i´ve attached light bars on all four sides, cctv, and have a very loud siren/speaker on top, i have a panic button that sets off all of them and a mic to call for them funkrs off. other than that i have extra measures too. glad to know you´re ok.

      Trent and Allie, I appreciate your videos and want to give you some info regarding Surfshark. The current protocol used by servers is iPv6. Surfshark uses iPv4. This is like buying a car that runs on leaded gas vs buying a car that burns unleaded gas. I am not an expert but when I installed Surfshark I was unable to access purchases on Amazon. I consulted with a Surfshark tech who informed me of the iPv4 - iPv6 issue. The solution was to downgrade to iPv4 for Surfshark to work on my Xfinity account.
      I know you get paid for advertising and support you in that but I can't go with Surfshark and would urge caution in recommendations to your viewers/subscribers. I dig your channel.

      Hello From New Zealand,
      Glad your both ok, A panic alarm of any sort can help, either on your key ring or air horns, making noise can scare off prowlers but also draw attention of others near by.
      I even used to park outside police stations for safety in city's.
      Police will often keep a eye on your safety, if they know your living in the the van. and we all get stopped by the police for looking suspicious in our vans so just ask them where they recommend you park up.
      Stay safe, and take care of yourself.

    At a small remote campground next to a lake in U.P. Michigan, I woke to my camper rocking and had that adrenalin rush thinking it was either a bear or a human. I had tied a clothesline from my camper to a small tree in the evening. Investigating the cause of my rocking camper, heart pounding, I discovered that a beaver had cut the small tree and was trying to drag the tree into the lake! He must have been throwing all his weight into his efforts to move that ridiculously stubborn little tree. I'm glad your encounter ended safely. Safe travels.

    You should consider getting a remote start key, so if someone is fiddling with your locks, you can remote start the car and they will most likely run away, you can also use the car alarm to scare them off. Another idea is to also to get a couple of security cameras around your vehicle. That would also deter people from trying to open your door.

    Having been a truck driver in the US for about 25 years, I’ve gotten very used to two things, getting pulled over by police and people trying to get into my truck while I sleep. Neither are intimidating to me anymore.
    Do you have a panic button on your key? You won’t even need to get out of bed. Set off the alarm, which also flashes all the lights, and listen to the footfalls running away. Turn the alarm off and go back to sleep.
    Or if you don’t have an alarm, get a horn-in-a-can. Turn the lights on, crack open the window, and let her rip. Same effect.

      @Brian Roberts yes, not many have the nuts these days to protect their stuff like this. It works like a charm. I did similar at my getaway cabin some years ago. Had plenty of no trespassing signs/private property around so there was no "ignorance" that could be claimed as well as several of the motion detection critter cams that were new tech at the time.
      Had a small 5' block wall around the house and a locked metal gate with stay out sign. I used basically the same method your dad did. Ran 2 bare copper wires with plops of silicone on the top of the wall cap @ each side bc Id found footprints, on the wall and trash on deck by the door and table. I made sure to tell my neighbors about all this in case it was them. They were all for it bc they had some problems too. Next trip i found evidence of someone getting bit bc they had apparently been jolted off the wall and hurt themselves enough that the cops could get a dried blood sample. I like that about rural county cops... they're all for 'self protection.'

    Security would be my top priority if I lived in a van. I'd mount powerful LED lights embedded around the doors with and extremely loud siren and a panic button by my bed. If I heard anyone, best believe I'd blind them with light and freak them out with a deafening siren. I'd also use window security guards and a anti-theft door between the cabin and the rear of the van.

    Wow you handled that quite well. I knew a really huge black guy with really dark skin a long time ago whose home was getting broken into in the middle of the night. He ALWAYS wore this deep dark purple hooded robe after he got a shower in the evening until he went to bed. Well, these two young men decided to try to break into this man's home but it was pretty obvious that they had no clue who owned it. My friend's name was Bolo. He was from some place in deep south Africa (can't remember where exactly) and most black people who live there have really really dark skin. Anyways...he quietly rushes to the door and just as they get it picked open he jumps into the doorway scaring the crap out of these two young guys and he shouts "BE GONE WITH YOU I SAY!!!" as he throws his hands up in the air like some sort of wizard! He and his wife told me that they have never seen two men run so fast in all of their lives!!! He said they were so scared that they couldn't get the car doors open, that their fingers kept sliding off of the door handles and they looked like a comedy team stumbling around trying to get the heck out of there in a hurry!!! I thought I was gonna burst a kidney from laughing so hard! Bolo was over 7 feet tall and had really big hands so I can only imagine what those guys saw when he leaped into the doorway at them!! LOL Too funny. He told me that he never got anything on his property stolen or broken into after that so he must've put the fear of God into those boys!!! :)

    I've been at home twice when someone has broken in / tried to break in: The first time, they were inside - I was about 8 or 9 (living in America), home alone sick on a school day; I crawled under our entrance hall desk, grabbed my dad's tommy stick (he was on the police force!), and called the dispatch. They caught the guy, following his footsteps in the snow - he wasn't the brightest bulb in the pack. The second time, I was in my 20s at my shared flat in Paisley, Scotland: We had a few useless, broken locks on our door, and one that actually worked. I heard the would-be thief wasting his time on the broken locks. I got down low, then started growling and barking like a mad dog ('learned that trick from my grandpa) - it shocked him so much, he tripped running down the hall stairs. I know what an adrenaline rush you must have had, so it's great that you could stay calm and assess the situation and take appropriate action!

    Great story, very well told. I have a friend who mounted an air splitting air horn on the roof of his van. He has it set up so he can blast it from inside the van without opening a door or window. Twice he has had attempted break ins while he was sleeping inside. He said, like you have, that driving away is the best solution, but he blasts the air horn and both times two things have happened: The would be thieves bolt instantly, and as important, he says blasting the noise makes him feel like he’s back in control. I do believe that trying to “arm” oneself with a knife or gun, etc., is just foolish. Those weapons can be turned against you so easily, and few of us are ready to live with the legal and emotional outcome of actually killing someone. Avoiding contact at all is a better option. Good on ya, Trent.

And there will be thousands and thousands of other tragedies of reactive or drunk or violent types or raging morons killing people that in retrospect they will wish they hadn't. The average person simply doesn't need to be walking around with a tool that will take another person's life. Most think simply brandishing a gun will deter people; they never think through that if you unholster a weapon you have to be willing to take a LIFE. What do they care if someone eventually finds out it has a microchip? Plus, the dog is more likely to get lost than stolen anyways, and how can their dog find it's way home if they live in a van traveling across 14 countries? They seem especially concerned with their own safety, so why not put at least as much thought into their pet's safety?! That's what I was wondering as I read this... A dog in the window barking would usually deter them away

    • @jlewis4587
      @jlewis4587 Před 3 lety +9

      I don’t know about Frank, but my dog barks at everything unless he’s in his crate, which he sleeps in at night. While inside the crate he barks at nothing. He may sigh or moan, but that’s all. Nobody taught him to do that. It’s just how he is.

    Your experience that nigh reminded me of something that I lived approximately 40 years ago when I was about your age. I had a camping bus, that’s what we called them then, it was a Mercedes 406D transport vehicle that I converted into a living space, I kept that van for 30 years, and made about as many trips from the north to the south of Europe and sometimes to the Canary Islands. I was sleeping soundly alone in it in a parking lot in south Stockholm when I was woken up by the motion of the hole vehicle rocking sideways like a baby carriage. I got up and went to the front of the vehicle to find a long haired young man staring at the door handle and shaking it so hard it made the entire 406D shake, he was looking down straight at the handle all I could see of him was his long curly dirty blond head and he couldn’t see me. I sat right besides him and nocked with my knuckles on the window, he froze paralyzed for a few seconds and then slowly lifted his head to see me, he was so scared his eyes almost popped out and then he started to run. I went back to sleep.

    Aww guys - you are definitely super prepared ! Sooo good. OMG having Trent just screames BOOO while lunging at the window... That kid may have just lost his inners haha 😆 So happy you are okay !! Those are absolutely the best advice I have heard - Thank you very much for sharing.
    We traveled across Canada this past summer and used the drivers seat. We will be making an escape plan too for future trips.

    Sounds like you had everything under control. I might have just hit the car alarm button on the fob as I was getting into the drivers seat. You did great!

    @t6s4b Před 4 lety +44

    Key fob alarm, air siren, security lights at the flip of a switch, cameras, etc., etc. You NEED more than what you have. Come on guys... don't be naive.

      I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks they're naive I mean they're down in South America and they think they can leave their doors open and nothing's going to happen cuz they feel so safe yet they're sleeping on edge I mean that's a contradiction in itself I'm sorry but I think that they're crazy

    FINALLY!! Allie in the driver seat!! And you survived Trent! ;) Glad you were prepared, and i think that dude will be more careful about closing in on vans! :) That incident could happen anywhere, that is important to remember. Even in camping spots. Its not only in this part of the world. Looking forward to you reaching the tip of the south America, safe travels! You guys rock!

    that's a reality of Van life and even your home. its really distressing to face the break in. even if you are not around. and later on find out that your sanctuary has been raided.
    but worse case is when you are there when you witness the break in
    stay safe
