    I think a really telling part of this video is that Fringe Guy is the kind of person people associate with a lack of self awareness, but his housemates:
    - Date his ex nonchalantly when he clearly still cares about her
    - Kill his mouse, and either don't realise or care, then make him clean it up
    - Ask him for protection to use on said ex
    - Take beer he bought for them out of the fridge without even seeing him sitting in it
    Meanwhile the worst thing he does is act cringe, all the while doing anything and everything asked of him. Really heartbreaking to see.

    • @lowvolume4494
      @lowvolume4494 Před 3 měsíci +236

      The worst thing he does is let it happen. Caused by his lack of social skills and relationships, he is a desperate people pleaser. This lets his housemate walk all over him.
      Of course, if he actually stood up for himself, then he'd truly be alone.

    • @mollusckscramp4124
      @mollusckscramp4124 Před 3 měsíci +145

      @@lowvolume4494 I disagree, he should have! The whole video I was thinking "the only time this would ever be remotely appropriate is during DnD or with LARP nerds". He's clearly not with the right people, because he's so desperate for a space where his silly cringey side can be socially accepted that he lets it bleed into a bunch of inappropriate places, like the conversation with the girl who is a total stranger at the coffee shop or the couple that needed help. He keeps looking for that "right" connection in all the wrong places.

    I haven't seen anyone mention the playground scene yet, but I think this is critical to understanding Fringe Guy as a character. Fringe Guy obviously has difficulty connecting with others, but his attempts to enjoy being alone (swinging by himself, playing solitaire) don't bring him joy, either. So he continues to try too hard to connect with people, despite it never going well for him

      do you know what's funny? i've seen people way worse, miles upon fucking miles worse than whatever it is that has been shown in the vid, or whatever it is that any of you mentioned. i've witnessed adult 20smth boys FARTING (swear to god like literally ong FARTING OPENLY) due to being nervous, AND acting extremely cringe on top of that. guess who was still able to score? THESE MFERS. the most liberating experiences of my life. 1 people underestimate the power of pity 2 people underestimate the power of cuteness (YES YES even in men; esp young men) 3 some people think too much, in general. the most confident guys are often those who have absolutely nothing to lose. and confidence, any confidence, is attractive. just as much as deliberate shyness, if it doesn't look sickly.
      fringe guys' friends weren't treating him awfully bc he was "weak". they're just trash to begin with, it's in their nature. they treat others just as bad (clearly using jessica, killing someone's pet = > realising it was probably someone's pet and not giving a fuck); they just hide it better w those who might fight back i.e. literally fuck them up. other than that, believe me, people like this are two-faced twats in their actions regardless of how "strong" you are. they might be sneaky abt fucking you over, they might be open abt it - but they will fuck you over one way or another. that's what lack of morals or principles does to a mfer

      Idk. They’re depicting the character as a dangerous psycho. The fringe guy from the first skit I could help, but this guy is what the least compassionate people on his receiving end think of him. A fundamentally broken freak who’s a danger to everyone and himself. Because he’s socially awkward

    • @c-simile1632
      @c-simile1632 Před 3 měsíci +65

      @@KUWAITGRIPSVEVO I mean what has he done that would make him in any way "dangerous"? At every step when he became aware that he was making people uncomfortable he immediately stopped what he was doing and tried to deescalate and explain. The most apt thing I suppose would be the teeth pulling, but in doing so he was causing only harm to himself, and every time decided not to actually go through with sending the package to Jessica, and it's possible he never did so because he realized that it was too far. I understand that you likely mean that the other people in the skit are the ones viewing him as dangerous and a psycho, but it should be clear to the audience that he really isn't. I feel like it really wouldn't be all that hard to "fix" him, as it simply seems like he tries too hard in his interactions with other people, and his struggles in doing so would likely further cause him to try harder. I also should note I interpreted the ending as him planning on killing himself rather than his roommate and Jessica.
      Take for example his interaction with the barista. When he was interacting normally she was into it and was willing to go to a party with him. I believe that once he realized that she was "interested" one of two things happened. Either he felt as though he was in a relatively safe environment to "be himself," or he thought that amping up his speech would further her interest in him and was a good idea. Once he does so the Barista becomes suddenly disinterested. As the audience you can recognize that these things tend to happen once he speaks in the way that he had, but to him he likely viewed it as either "Nobody wants to talk/interact with me. Nobody likes me." or "Once I act true to myself nobody wants to talk or interact with me and nobody likes me."
      I think it's simply an issue of him trying too hard in his interactions with other people with the belief that doing so will be good for those interactions. Once doing so fails, he likely views it as he needs to try even harder next time. It's possible he doesn't recognize that his issue is with him trying as hard as he does, so doesn't recognize that he should be lessening it rather than raising it. I think that "fixing him" could be as simple as making him aware that people dislike when he speaks in that way, though there is the other solution of him finding a friend or friend group that is okay with him interacting in that way. I think in either case you could see a diminishment in his more "problematic" mannerisms and speech, and thus a more successful social life.

    The scene where the delivery guy tells Fringe Guy to “just stop” and he responds “stop what??” is so revealing. Up to this point, I was wondering why Fringe Guy doesn’t just stop with the awkward outbursts - he seems like a nice and chill guy who people would otherwise like, so it seems like the obvious first step. For example, the barista seemed interested in going to his party until he did his weird bit. But when he asks the delivery guy “stop what??”, it indicates that he has such low self awareness that it may not have fully occurred to him that the bits he (seemingly compulsively) performs are the #1 thing causing others to avoid him and preventing others from truly connecting with him.
    But that also makes me reflect - is it really so bad that he does these awkward/silly bits?? Why should he have to conform his personality and communication style to others just to be really seen, or to experience meaningful connection with others? To be fair, on some level I think his outbursts communicate on an implicit level to people that ‘this guy is not on the same page as me, and is not reading the situation properly’ which causes them to quickly retreat. For example, take the guy who needs help for his pregnant wife. He’s in a serious emergency situation and is trying to get help from a kind stranger, but he’s immediately put off by Fringe Guy’s weird bit because it’s not appropriate for the situation at hand, which makes the man question whether Fringe Guy is a safe or trustworthy person since he apparently can’t read the room well enough to not joke around with two people who are in crisis. But, Fringe Guy isn’t a bad guy. He cares enough to buy his roommates beer and give them condoms, and he cares enough to try and help these strangers get to the hospital, but he’s tormented by his inability to really connect with others, although he never stops trying, which I really respect and admire. I hope Fringe Guy finds a true friend soon and comes to understand that he doesn’t have to accept the shitty treatment from others.
    For me, this video forces me to look at the assumptions I’ve made about people in the past, question whether those judgments were fair, and be conscious of the ways my (even micro-) interactions contribute to a real person’s lived experience.
    At our core, we all crave meaningful human connection and to be truly seen and appreciated. Fantastic work!

    You can always tell which videos are directed by Tyler Falbo. I love that you guys work with him. I've been a fan of his for years and he's how I found this channel. His ability to emulate hyper-specific sensations and characters and scenarios is unbelievable. I loved Immoral Compass because it was such a well done extension of his prior body of work on CZcams, like Free Installations. Combining his ideas and vision with the Almost Friday cast seems like a no-brainer. I cant imagine any other pairing would be able to make this kind of stuff.

    This was actually really beautiful. I like the layers, the longing for connection but really not knowing how to connect. Hiding sadness behind comedy or playing a character. And how the the silence, emptyness and loneliness in this poor man's life is reflected in his surroundings: no friends, no girlfriend, but also no radio in the car, no stuff in his room, no light in his house or life. The link to social anxieties and/or psychological disorder. Chekhov's gun in the drawer and the playing cards was a nice "joke" from an expectations perspective. It's great acting, but also great filming and scenario work in my opinion.
    Two things:
    1. if this is you, or if this resonates with you, look around and find help. That hasn't have to be "professional" help, but confiding in someone that things aren't going so great and/or finding something to occupy your mind can really make a big difference. Funnily enough you even see it in the sketch: "wait, I wasn't in the kitchen", for a second this takes up the whole attention span of the main character, so much so that he drops character and lives in the moment. This can also be achieved without losing, risking to lose, your best friend in the world. Try running for an hour straight, do pushups until you can't anymore, write a poem, make art and set it on fire. Anything that takes your mind of where you were at. There's always light somewhere, even if it's hard to see. Some random dude from the Netherlands on the internet believes in you and thinks you can do this. Keep going!
    2. I really hope you guys at Almost Friday TV get picked up for "bigger" productions. I think you absolutely deserve it.

    This gave me the same feeling as a Nat Geo doc where the narrator tells you a crocodile is going to eat a gazelle, but you still let yourself kinda believe the gazelle might get away right up until it’s brutally and efficiently ripped in half and dragged under water.

    The juxtaposition of their approach to it is so similar but different in the entertainment factor

    holy shit. inside the drawer at 7:53 isn't another set of pliers. It's a gun. A fucking gun. My interpretation is that, based on the trashcan full of pliers and bloody letters, he just pulled out each teeth for a person in his life who had significance to him. Then he was going to kill himself, at least until he was interrupted by his friend. Then at the end, he opens the drawer, ending the sketch and finishing the deed.

    The passing whimper at 8:48 when he tells his roommate to go have sex with the girl he literally just pulled his teeth out over (I imagine so he could feel SOMETHING) is the part that stuck out to me the most and makes me want to cry myself. And his roommate either doesn't care, or is wanting to hurt this guy as deeply as possible.

    These guys truly need to make a feature-length movie. This kind of content is what I'd expect from Hollywood! You can tell this gripping story was made with thought put into it unlike what slop is being put into the cinemas nowadays.
