      Will the size of the UCO make a difference? Has anyone tried it? I've got a bunch of the old school UCO storm proof matches (not Titan), and haven't bought any of the "XXL" matches reviewed here.

  • @binaryglitch64
    @binaryglitch64 Před 2 lety +3

    My plan... To buy both and put the UCO matches in the Zippo container and just use the Zippo matches around the house (pilot light, birthday candles, etc.) and get UCO match refills to refill my camping and survival matches.

  • @EDCAdventures1991
    @EDCAdventures1991 Před 6 lety +9

    Thanks for the test. I’ve tested cheaper matches and moved up the the UCO using both their Stormproof and Titan. Only matches I trust even though that pad isn’t waterproof like the zippo. But since you have spares I’m not worried about that part. I do like the UCO Stormproof Case being bright orange instead of the Titan being olive drab.

    • @tyler1776.
      @tyler1776. Před 2 lety +1

      A little bit of nail polish on the case works well for me! My wife has it laying around so I didn't have to go out of my way to buy some, but if you have to, go buy a cheap bright orange, red, yellow etc nail polish and you're set!! I just did 3 rings around my case and That works great for better viz if I drop the case. Spray paint works also but will fade faster and isn't quite as robust as nail polish. Best of luck to you! Stay frosty.

    I do not use any brand of XL size matches in my systems, but I do use the UCO standard size storm proof matches in ALL of my kits. My kit needs room for other things... so I stick to the standard UCO's.

    • @tyler1776.
      @tyler1776. Před 2 lety +1

    I agree that UCO appears to be the better champion in performance however you didn't test, and really can not, until 10 years later...shelf life. I found some old strike anywhere matches a while back at my old job that still work but there performance in those were questionable with softer heads snapping off and the such. Dadgum good video here.

      In Zip lock freezer bag and then seal that up in a Food saver bag. The Food saver bag system can protect a multitude of outdoor items. If any water or air gets into that with reasonable care, IDK. you can do the same with pre prepared meals and then just immersion boil the bag outdoors. Eat out of the bag, no dirty plates or pots😂

  • @richardelliott9511

    I don't see that the difference in the two would have any real world relevance. What other practicle ignition source is going to work even half as well in similar circumstances? I think I'll look into wet/dry sandpaper as a scratch source for my UCO's. That probably won't work when wet either but at least it can survive getting wet without falling apart.
    Thanks.

  • @mayo470
    @mayo470 Před 5 lety +1

    How do these hold up when they are soaked in water prior to striking? I mean not just dipping them in water after you strike them and try to put them out once they are lit. The UCO matches are obviously far superior to the Zippo matches, and it seems ike a no brainer to just put the striker pads inside the case. Just to have a rubber cover over the striker pad seems like a novelty and not worth the extra bulk for the Zippo model. The Zippo pad doesn't seem as coarse as the UCO pad is either. Also, can you use something else to strike these i.e. strike anywhere matches? For example a Leatherman file, or a rock etc.

    Would the UCO's work with the Zippo case? Seems like you could have a pair of huge ferro rods for the equivalent amount of space in your pack, so I don't think they would be for me. Nice comparison though.

    • @tyler1776.
      @tyler1776. Před 2 lety

      It's always best practice to have more than one way of starting a fire. Redundancies are nice in survival! Let's say your ferro rod breaks or it gets wet or lost. I have lighters (2 Bic), matches and 2 ferro rods in my 72hr+ bag. 24hr+ bag has 2 mini Bic, matches and 1 ferro rod. The 24hr bag is 24 hours of comfort but I could go about 3 days. The 72 hour bag is 72 hours of comfort but I could go about 7 days with it and live. After that, I need to start finding/gathering/hunting food and boiling water.
