  • The Liberal Democrats launched their general election manifesto, with promises to invest in health and care, rejoin the European single market and eventually the EU, and compensate the victims of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal.
    The latter issue has dogged party leader Sir Ed Davey, who served as postal affairs minister under the coalition government between 2010 and 2012.
    He has come under fire for failing to do more to help wrongly-convicted subpostmasters.
    The manifesto details a pledge to “ensure justice for the victims of scandals and prevent future scandals”.

      @MitchellVA Před 2 měsíci +5

      How many illegal migrants have impacted you personally? 2022 had the highest levels of immigration I think at 750000 and the migrants you are complaining about are at 30000. You are being really blind here. Focus on bigger issues please

    • @tlg5003
      @tlg5003 Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@MitchellVA I'm a taxpayer, so every single one. And, I have witnessed first hand my local area changing as a direct result of migrants being housed there (a large hotel completely closed to house migrants). I am not blind and it's quite frankly more than a little arrogant for you to be so dismissive of my concerns. You sound just like an out-of-touch politician pouring scorn on the concerns of voters because you believe your perspective is superior to anyone else.
      People coming to the UK illegally with no checks or safeguards on who they are is a legitimate concern for many people. It undermines the integrity of our borders It takes resources away from the most vulnerable refugees attempting to come via legal routes. It is a security risk
      It reduces the funds we can make available for international aid. It finances criminal gangs. In short, it is in no way comparable to legal migration which is the comparison you are crudely making. Perhaps you should adjust your focus as you clearly can't perceive the prominence of this issue amongst significant numbers of the electorate.

    • @MitchellVA
      @MitchellVA Před 2 měsíci +6

      @@tlg5003 I see your point and I'm sorry if I can across as rude however, it is our laws that mean that we cannot just kick out illegal migrants. We chose to do that. And I don't think that's wrong because they are clearly desperate and fleeing war. If it were me, I would develop some sort of programme to get them working so that they can integrate and purchase housing for themselves but this government will probably not do that. However, I do still think when people focus on the boats over larger issues, it is the result of the government using them as a scapegoat to avoid actually doing anything they really should. For example, cost of living, cost of housing and the climate crisis. I think these are all barriers to why maybe the migrants are in the hotels. We are struggling and we have jobs, imagine their situation. I think if we were a bit more proactive with the migrants they would not be an issue

    • @tlg5003
      @tlg5003 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@MitchellVA Thank you 🙏🏻. To clarify, I never said or suggested we just 'kick out illegal immigrants'. People who have a legitimate asylum claim should be allowed to stay. However, that still doesn't mean that it's acceptable for anyone to enter the UK via illegal boat crossings. It is absolutely not acceptable given the reasons I outlined above (I won't repeat myself). They are not all 'desperate or fleeing war'. That is factually incorrect. Some of course will be, but a significant number will be economic migrants. Those who are will in almost all cases never be removed from the UK. I wonder how you propose to deal with removals because politicians have no answer whatsoever.
      Finally. I fundamentally disagree that asylum seekers should be allowed to work before they have a right to stay. That would be a disaster. You want to introduce a policy which would actively encourage people to make dangerous and illegal crossings. It would increase the 'pull' factor. And, why should people who pay people smugglers to jump the queue have rights to work in this country? With respect it is naive to think this wouldn't increase the problem.
