    One of the first recorded mentions of balalaika is that a servant was chased by a bard who wielded a balalaika and tried to hit him with it.

    Dude i want more balalaika tracks so bad.
    PS: I really hope you read this. I think intruments like the balalaika (the metal balalaika song in specific) are able to produce realxig metal music that is easy to listen without being super evasive. Basically like how chilltep is to dubstep. Something far more relaxing and easy to keep on in the background. I'll definitely be personally be exploring this myself for now.

    That balalaika metal track you made is awesome. In my opinion folk can sound really metal if you add proper bass line and drum line which you did. I tried that myself and the results are pretty damn badass. Hope to see you do more of "Metal on instruments that aren't metal" since its so fun and refreshing :)

    The instrument should sit between your thighs, Rob, which should eliminate the dreaded "arm stab". It will make the instrument sit right for playing and more comfortable for you. I built three electric ones, two of which I tune A-e-a. I have also explored A-e-g, which opened up new chord shape possibilities. Here is a challenge: a MESHUGGAH cover, say, DEMIURGE! ;)

    I inherited one of these from my Granddad. He used to work as a crane driver on docks in my city. And one day in 70's he traded a Russian sailor a bottle of vodka for his balalaika. I kind played around on it a bit when i got it. Though i never really bothered to look up how to tune it. I just tuned it GBE like the bottom of a guitar. Then I put it behind my other instruments and kind of forgot about it. But you inspired me to take it out for a spin again, with he correct balalaika tuning, this time. And i must admit it is much more fun this way :) Though I do really need some new strings for it. since htey have never been changed (they are like 40-50 years old).

      @xMElpx Před 6 lety +1

      Well, I sometimes use open tunings, but the strings are not beside each other. It makes sense on a six string guitar, but a guitar with 3 strings? Well, thanks for your explanation

    • @year1guitar
      @year1guitar Před 6 lety +6

      After seeing your question I`ve read some articles in Russian on this topic, and basiccaly there are two versions:
      1. This is made for polyphonic playing. Lower (it terms of pitch) strings are used to represent the "bass" or the "alto" voice, while the highest one represents the "tenor" or the "soprano" voice. That`s also the reason why the lower strings are made of nylon, and the higher one is made of metal - this way the higher voice will ring out and be heard as the loudest (exactly how it shoud be according to classical harmony traditions) while the lower voice will be soft, but would not be to quiet.
      In this case a player shoud put his thumb over the neck to barre both of the lower strings in unison (kinda how blues and fingerstyle guitar players do with the bass strings on a guitar, but they ussually press down only one string at a time). And thus, the balalaika player have four fingers of the left hand free to play intricate details of the higher melody on a high string, also, as i mentioned, it feels like two instrumenst played together and good for playing whitout any actual accompaniment.
      2. Originally balalaika was a two-stringed instrument, and V.Andreyev (who re-opened this instrument to public and made it popular again in the late 19-th century, because after the Csars and church opressed and persecuted Russian street musicians, perfomers and comedy actors known as the skomorokhs some hundred years earlier, the balalaika almost got extinct) made it the three stringed one to match the new, triangular shape of balalaika`s body (which he designed), but he did not want to extend the range of an instrument, so he just tuned the new string in unison whith the old one.
      The funny part is that the versions are not really excluding each other, but the "three strings to match the three angles" one is a bit less reasonable and plausible in my opinion.
