THE Guild Wars Iceberg! Explained!

- Yo! I'm a big fan of the "Iceberg" video format. Where you talk about a subject in great detail, starting with simple common things. As you descend the iceberg the trivia becomes more obscure and even leans into conspiracy theories. Well I love Guild Wars and I didn't see one of CZcams so I made it myself!
This is THE Guild Wars Iceberg. How many of these things did you know? Let me know below!

This was awesome and I shared it with my alliance. Would love more GW content if you can squeeze anything else out of the game :)
It's not much, but i do have a let's play currently going on! Proh. completed and currently in the middle of Factions. I intend to do everything , even GW Beyond. Thanks so much for sharing it!
@@TheLazySage7 I will definitely throw that on while I’m grinding some Forza or FPS my man!
Anyone watching this getting the bug of nostalgia, you can hop right back in! Plenty of people still playing, guilds active and everything. Granted, it is not as it was in the heyday, but they even just added 15th Anniversary weapons and elite skills two years ago. We are now just in the 17th Anniversary celebration, and the bonus items are obtainable. Thousands of active players still doing everything, so come on!
@Danwir Knight thanks for the heads up. I just re-installed gw1 yesterday n have been consuming gw1 vids all week. Yeah, I've got that nostalgic itch bad! Glad to know there are still some hardcore OGs still grinding in ancient Tyria! I'll see you around soon enough!
The stranger who tricked Zinn was Palawa Joko. We find this out via quests in Draconis Mons in GW2.
Holy Crap! yeah I guess so! Makes me wonder if GW beyond had the chance to make it to Elona, if it would of tied that story together. Would make sense if its Joko. Thanks for answering this!
Praise Joko!
guild wars 1 is a peculiar game. i consider it being the biggest forgotten game - seems like almost no one does videos on it. yet, it is one of the biggest PC games of all times when it comes to sold copies. i am always willing to watch more amazing ones like this one. it brings back memories. thank you, dude.
Thank you for watching it! It really is such an amazing gem. I had to make a video about one of my fav. games!
Im looking into getting GW1 for fun, Im fairly new to GW2, only been playing for a year, and I can't get enough of its lore.
@@ihaveaplan.ijustneedmoney.9777 Guild war 2 is to Guild war what Total War Warhammer is to Medieval 2 Total war
Have been staring at that farewell Gaile, and just can't be 100% sure if I indeed spotted my main in there.
I guess that Balthazar temple is the one that ended up as the Auric Basin HP in GW2 🤔
That GameStop ad is bizarre xD
Yeah, I'm glad the Balthazar temple is seen again in GW2. Still don't know WHY tho! And yeah that gamestop commercial is forever engraved in my mind. "Cool Game in my stocking yeah!"
It's cool how a few of these things FINALLY have answers now thanks to Guild Wars 2.
For example, the Wizard's Tower is finally being used since the latest expansion starts with people wondering what happened to it.
/wings also works for the wings. across several years, the timer was broken. normally the emote can only be used every 30s, but at some point the emote switched to checking the timer for the zrank emote, meaning the wings could be spammed
so many forgotten memories unlocked
Awesome video! 55hp monk was so wild. I remember when it was discovered or "leaked" in late 2005. Guild mates and internet forums went crazy. Many chinese accounts with Monk mains sprang up overnight as 55hp builds were used to farm ecto/obby shards in FoW / UW and griffons outside Augury Rock, creating 'gold farms' where real money is traded for in-game money. This caused ecto/obby prices to plummet and Anet took notice; many accounts were banned that had knowingly purchased from or had sold in-game currency and items.
In response, a March 2, 2006 update forever changed mob behavior, causing them to flee repeated AoE damage and mitigate easy kills. This update also affected Augury Rock farming; replacing the griffons with scarab foes that remove enchantments, easily countering 55hp monk builds.
Thank you, there are still returning fans of original GW.
Great iceberg! Im glad the GW1 commercial was not the final product. You could see some animations and skins that clearly got edited, but overall that would have been a rough looking game.
Very fun video! Reminds me of the times when I was reading guildwikis more obscure pages
Where I knew some from my head, I defiantly did some wiki digging to get some of these!
Got introduced to Tyria through GW2, so hearing and seeing these locations in GW1 is like rummaging through old family picture albums from the 80s-90s. 😂
Love this compilation! The stuff I found most interesting were the Dhuum ban hammer (or scythe) and the Beta-ender Gwensplosion 😂 it sounded very fun to be there.
trip down memory lane! Ty for this
Henge of Denravi sword was highly sought-after for it's +5 energy mod back in the day. 55 monks used it
1h scepter was the thing Imo, had to have it to range 1shot the things that came out the ground in UW so they didn't dispel you. I don't recall anyone using a sword in UW. Anyway, if u did it right, u didn't need extra energy.
I remember I used to farm Totem Axes in The Falls, which 55 Monks bought all the time because it has +5 energy and an enchantment +20% it's a really nice item. Even nowadays every so often I go try to farm some.
Amazing game with lots of detail. I wish they would never stopped making Guild Wars 1 content, i keep coming back over and over to play a bit even today.
Gaile is actually a friend of our family - we met her in person at the ANET Party after the very first GW2 PAX event, but we also interacted with her a lot in GW1. Mum was one of the leaders of the Amazon Basin Guild at the time.
Oh Thats cool beans!
I actually have two separate GW2 NPCs named after me - a weaponsmith in Divinity’s Reach and a Vigil Warmaster. I was, like, no more than 8-9 years old that first PAX, and all of the ANET staff thought I was adorable, apparently. Won my own ticket to the party at the Guild Wars Trivia contest, though no doubt the guy running it purposefully gave me the easy questions lol.
@@Munchkin.Of.Pern09 That's amazingly cool! I can only hope one day to find a simple NPC, named "Lazy Sage" or Jing Silverstone sense that's the name I used sense GW1. Either way to be referenced in my favorite video game series, no matter in what small way. Would be so cool!
Alot of nostalgia here. and i remember most if not everything here. i had the best time playing this game from 2005 to 2008ish. alot of hours and have never had a better timer playing a game even today.
Yeah GW1 is a gem. I enjoy GW2 but it's definitely no sequel. GW1 is just made different.
GAILE! Ugh, the memories.
After all this time you made me remember becoming a 55hp monk and grind the Underworld to death with this build more than 15 years ago.
I was really good in it and made a lot of platin besides all the other rare materials I found.
The fun thing is the only reason I actually started with a Monk as my second character was that my guild members told me that I should choose this class if I ALWAYS want to find a group to play with. (My first one was Warrior/Monk of course, haha) And so I took it as a challenge and later even mastered it in PVP.
1:58 I think the newest GW2 expansion Secrets of the Obscure sheds a lot of light on the wizard’s tower found in GW1.
Red Resign was freaking awesome to farm. Really love hoe the community held together to farm
I remember it well!
Strange that I played HB nonstop and never encountered someone doing that or did it myself.
If you leave ashford abbey and head toward wizards folly there is a waterfall up this little hill that has a rock with initials a heart around the initials. You have to face the waterfall and flip your camera to see it. i found this 10+ years ago.
This was wonderful to watch! And enlightening. Lots of stuff I never knew... especially about certain NPCs!
Thanks so much!
Man i love stuff like this, such an enjoyable watch thank you for making this! 😄
That was an awesome video !
Being a GW1 enjoyer since Prophecies came out, i didn't knew 50% of all of those easter eggs and this is amasing to discover niche things and lore from a game that i care so much about.
By the way, the fact that even to this day we still discover new easter eggs is fascinating, this game is so great even in the troll part.
Thanks! and Right!? I love GW1 so much. I wished it had a few more campaigns / expansions, by GWEN they where really getting good at the design. I enjoy GW2 but its nothing like GW1, GW1 is just this special game.
22:35 The Jungle trolls also have 2 professions (Warrior and Ranger, as they mainly use warrior skills but also have Troll Unguent which is a Ranger heal)
wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Jungle_Troll
Nice! More knowledge gained.
Sorry to tell you, I am the guy who discovered Cynn's thong. At least, one of them. I remember telling everyone about it for so long... months, even after years, lots of people didn't know. I discovered it accidentally and here's how: I was standing at the north area of Ascalon near where Prince Rurik is - this is Pre-Searing. There's that battle that's going on outside which you can watch, but cannot interact with. Anyway, I was trying to see if I could somehow get closer via clipping and mouse POV. So, Cynn is standing there by the arch, and my POV clipped under her clothes. And that's how I discovered it. So, thank the Charr :)
To the best of my knowledge, though, they have not removed it like you said in the video. I think it's still there.
12:58 There's a spider boss on a gw2 fractal that speaks some weird language, and no one knows what does she says
hmmmm spooky
_Facing the Brood Queen_
_Brood Queen: (hiss)_
_One (random) reaction from Kay every time the Brood Queen hiss:_
_Kay: Ohhh no. No, no, no._
_Kay: Watch out for the webs! And the fangs!_
_Kay: You're doing great. Just avoid the pointy bits!_
_Kay: Something's wrong. The room just got really cold..._
_Kay: Wait...did you just feel that? Like all the warmth got sucked out of the room..._
_Brood Queen: Omdebstea? Iph om lyvut?_
_Kay: Oh gods-I am NOT okay with giant spiders talking!_
_Brood Queen: Vmaite ba!_
_Kay: Wait! I know those words. "Vmaite," that's "answer." "Answer us"!_
_Brood Queen: Ejewptim devllts ba._
_Kay: "The rock-hewn" Dwarves? "The dwarves trapped us"? What is this thing._
Great video ! Brought back nice memories :)
Glad to hear!
Man i really wish we would have gotten Utopia. It sounds so cool.
Maybe they'll bring it back for a gw2 xpac.
Awesome video man! I knew a few of these but surely a lot of them I had no idea :D
Great video - learned a few things, even though i play it for more than 15 years now. :)
When you mentioned the balthazar statue in maguma..grenth's statue automatically came to my mind! :)
Yeah I always loved how GW1 had these things just left around with little explanation. It's super cool!
So after I watched the game stop commercial clip? I had to pause the video because I seriously could not stop laughing. Utterly priceless.
a classic!
Just today I finished 100% cartography of Tyria. Now I have Tyria and Cantha and just have to finish Elona.
oh shiii lazysage on my frontpage!! GG bro happy to see ur doing good and i love hte video!
Wow! I play both games (gw1 and Gw2) and never heard of the xunlai HQ!!! time to log in gw1 and see it for myself!!!
Yeah its super cool!
Wonderful video love the dive & so many interesting things i didn't know. Played Guild Wars & Guild Wars2 still. So many awesome Easter eggs . Thank you
Glad you enjoyed!
18:20 There was also a character model embedded in a bridge pillar somewhere in the Eye of the North Far Shiverpeaks. Can’t remember which map exactly and I think it was removed in an update, but ANet said it was a way of getting a sense of scale when designing a map.
a "naked" man in the bridge in gunnars hold. there used to be videos of it on CZcams. I believe there were a few more cases, but all known ones got removed.
they did claim it was just a kinda standard measurement thing they did and missed
6:38 those iceberg references become iceberg themselves.
Awesome video! Great tidbits of knowledge
Thanks! Yeah I love GW1, One of my all time favorites
I think I remember those mystery statues used to give you a 30m or 1h buff after bringing it a offering in form of just paying money i believe .... I think they removed in an update cus of all the overpowered character builds ...
The buffs still can be bought, allowing vqs to be easier
Those statues of balth, grenth, lyssa, melandru and dwayna in tyria actually light up when your world has favour and you can get blessings out whilst adventuring.
fun iceberg, thanks
Thank you for watching!
yesss so happy someone made this video after all thoose years
So, my fav little man, you took a break from your playthrough to make this instead? I concure, you deserve it! But dont take too long! I need your content!
Just today, Its Thanksgiving here in the US. But the LP will continue along as normal the next day. Don' t you worry my dude!
Insider info: in GW3 you will be able to see the wizard's tower from space but still not able to visit it.
Wizard's Tower is actually a hidden space ship colony that will launch into space in-between GW2 and GW3. And then in GW3 we can see and still cant visit lol
@@TheLazySage7
czcams.com/video/cc4rcnC5ECM/video.html
_A new chapter in Tyria’s story begins August 22 with the launch of Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure™, our newest expansion._
_The Wizard’s Tower and its creator are some of Tyria’s best-kept secrets. Dating back to the original Guild Wars®, it’s taken up residence on the Tyrian horizon since the beginning. All Tyria knew was that it was supposedly owned by a wizard named Isgarren-although he’s never been physically seen-and that a few individuals had tried to breach its walls (looking at you, Galrath). During the Guild Wars 2 era, it rested above the hamlet of Garenhoff until we plucked it out of the sky in the June 27 update. Aside from a couple of teasers over the years, we’ve shielded the truth about Isgarren and his mysterious tower… until now._
_The Wizard’s Tower provided the perfect canvas to tell a very different story-one that spans thousands of years. Focusing on Isgarren, the Wizard’s Tower, and the Astral Ward allowed us to dive into some of the deepest crevices of our lore-we’re talking ancient beings, whispers of long-ago wars, and buried secrets. We’ll be fighting an entirely new enemy faction only subtly teased in content in the past._
_It’s a story that lit a flame under the development team, too. Over the years, almost every team wanted to utilize the Wizard’s Tower-from raids and fractals to story. But no single idea landed where we wanted to take it. Giving the Wizard’s Tower an entire expansion felt like the best way to honor what is now a multigame mystery._
_With the dragon story bookmarked at Aurene’s temporary departure, the team was eager to let off some steam and work on something a little wild. The Wizard’s Tower was just as exciting to us as it has been for the community to speculate about all these years. When we managed to wiggle it in to just about every pitch we had for the fourth expansion, we knew we had our topic._
watching this after the release of GW2: SotO it is still amazing how long they managed to NOT touch the wizard's tower.
If are suggesting that after 250 years evennia is still operating under the code name E, are you implying that Livia and Evennia are sharing the Scepter of Orr to live forever like some sort of immortality granting MOB(magically operated boyfriend)?
Don’t forget there is a twin scepter of Orr. They wouldn’t need to share exactly
@@kduv889 except that the scepter twin, the staff of the mists gets destroyed in gw1 as part of a quest chain, which ends up being canon in gw2
I had never seen that GameStop commercial but I love it
Pretty strange right? For whatever reason it really stuck to me. Prob cause its a weird commercial using assets from one of my Favorite games!
Them status if you have favor you can /kneel at them an get a boost in that area I played 15yrs I am sure that’s what they do as I did see them exploring 100% everything
Oh I know what they do. Its more of a in lore reason. I know what the game mechanic is.
Always wondered about the horses, especially since they added mounts...
Man, the Guild vault would be a nice addition to the guild
Thank god ANET revamped the wow-clone art style of the alpha build. That looked so bad compared to what we got.
What a great little video!
Aww, thanks!
22:05 I am really happy, that they ditched the WoW colourpallette. Too much of a cartoon style.
Nice video, eventhough I read at least several hours in the GuildWiki many informations are new to me.
Yeah that old Alpha footage is crazy. Arenanet was founded by ex blizzard staff. So maybe that's why the early designs were so "WoW" like.
That was very, very interesting TheLazySage7! I'm going to watch it again tomorrow. 👍😎 So many things I want to comment on! But, I'll choose one: Do you have the Bugged Mausoleum Weapons, and can you still use them if you do? 🤔😏
Will you make an Iceberg vid for GW?
I never had a Bugged Mausoleum Weapon :( but IF you got one, they do still exist, and yes! You can use them!
That was a interesting video thanks a lot
!!
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed
I'm so glad they switched away from that cartoony graphic style seen in the alpha. Really looked like a WoW clone, and just generally crap 😅
Yeah, the founders of Anet were all Blizzard staff, so it prob took some time to shake that off. But I agree!
I have to say, the time the Dryad Bow dropped for me, made me insanely rich in GW. it was probably the rarest item I ever got, that includes my req 8 Crystalline Sword.
You can no longer achieve the "Commander" title if you didn't get it before they removed it, but you can still display it if you did.
oh man a Req 8 Crystaline Sword? damn! I never got anything remotely rare lol
@@TheLazySage7 It's crazy, although it wasn't perfect as it was only 15-21 damage, not 15-22. this was before they had "inscribable" versions.
I never sold it. I had a req 10 Magma shield. as far as any other rare items, I've never got a drop, but have witnessed a dude get a mini ghostly hero.
@@TheLazySage7 I have seen Rec 7 Crystalline Swords, but they were all non max damage purples.

The true meaning of bitter sweet.
Thx for maling this. Guild wars 1 is soo good
Love GW1, it needed this.
I love this game! Factions was my introduction to Mmo's. The best community i have ever been apart of in gaming! I miss those days😢
Yeah GW1 was a gem of its time
The Grenth one is a raid in gw2 though
Yeah! When I make a GW2 Iceberg, this will be mentioned
thx
The Lyssa Ice Cave is a good spot to farm the Icy Dragon Sword. It drops from Ice Imps out there.
People start contributing with more stuff for a 2-nd video? :) A word about the rabit from PRE, Sadie and the special dye color, how people were able to go to GH from PRE. Your turn, guys :)
Oh man the Dye Color. Are we speaking about how you could mix tons of different dyes? I remember doing that
@@TheLazySage7 That as well. Mixing I mean. 1 red, 3 black :D In the past there was a special pink color, for Sadie, the gamer girl that passed away, which color I really don't know if it was kept or nerfed, I'll look up when I got a few minutes.
@@SuspiciousAra I believe when "Pink day in LA comes around" that NPC spawns and you can buy Pink dye!
The music thing let you put ur own files in, customized battle and city music
I know that custom music is a thing in GW2. I haven't heard that being the case with GW1. I know Direct Sound had a few special musical tracks you would get from that system. But if you can openly custom the music in GW1, that's cool beans.
Red Resign was not popular for hero rank, it was popular because on the Zaishen mission day where Hero Battle was the current mission for PvP you could repeat the mission extremely quickly for the zaishen key reward which you could spam at the zaishen chest for *insane* gold and ectos. It effectively destroyed the economy for the most part.
The Balthazar statue in Maguuma jungle is a great place to kneel and make a donation for a bonus buff. Any god statues would give you that in prophecies before they made it into a more expanded feature in subsequent campaigns.
Yeah I know what they do in game. But from a LORE perspective is what I'm curious about!
well done nice effort
Thanks, The background music is too low, but I'm self taught and still learning. But thank you so much for the kind words!
The gamestop commercial was for the gamestop promoncode special they did with guild wars. I want to say it was for rare mini pets
The god statues serve the same purpose as on the other continents they are really far from any outpost and you can get a gods blessing there to push yourself. They give you health and moral boost if you kneel and pay the gods some respect (your hard earned gold) ;)
I meant more IN LORE why they are where they are. but yes, buffs! helpful when vanquishing back in the day
Whoa, I've actually seen the Doom ban, and had no idea what it was, until now.
Still best ban method in any game I've played.
@@TheLazySage7 I miss playing these games.
@@BowedWings Yeah GW1 still had so much potential.
@@TheLazySage7 So much potential. They could release new gameplay for it today, and people would flood back to it.

noice!
Pretty sure if the server has favour then you can kneel and receive a blessing from those random god statues
Oh, thanksgiving! I had to Google that, you yanks sure have some strange customs.
GW alpha just looks like WoW
i really want to go back to it but i suck at GW1 need to replay and get better, some of the stories after the main campaign was kinda hard to solo with merc
my favorite also
how'd you get a high quality copy of the guild wars beta footage @ 20:24?
It's on CZcams actually! crazy how different it was right?!
Thanks a lot! It would have been better if you showed the actual NPCs instead of playing at random places and just show a picture of the NPC. For example you could fight with Nerashi while talking about her.
Yeah I should of done a bit more. But it was taking forever to make, and I wanted to actually get the video out. But your not wrong. Notes for the future!
Still the best game, love you all 90's, late 80's born peeps. We're all old now. Even older then Rurik when he got axed.
32 and counting...
Ancient weapon looks like a mini Arc of the Covenant
It really did! I Feel it had to be intentional. We where even in the desert when we find it.
You missed one big story my man but nice iceberg the story you missed was a player called Divine Lynie whom hijacker’s players account via a loophole he found with customer support he actually attacked my account an stripped all players luckily my rare pets an ectos & armbraces was always kept on a alt account for such a thing happening where as there was a player whom had loads stolen easily $20,000 worth of stuff as he had a lot of them henchman tonics he even got gaile grays account an used her mod commands it went to court it’s a big story you missed maybe do some research an it’ll be some nice content for you think it’ll be nice for the people that have always loved guild wars 1 to know. Sadly I quit easily 6-8yrs ago sold my assets when was becoming a father but I still have my main account Mini Rizla which I have thought coming back an also playing GW2.
Again nice vid just I was like expecting you to have that in there I was like it’s anytime now I am gonna see him say “Divine Lynie”. 😂
Yeah I heard about the story after the fact. Must of happened after I stopped playing GW1. Unreal. shits crazy!
type /kneel near the god statue the avatar of that god will spawn and grant you a boon.
Thats the main reason of the statues
lore reasons. i know the mechanical reason. lol
5:36 They looks like charr cauldrons.
May the algorithm overlords be pleased this day!
Thank you kindly my good sir!
Cynn's thong are not gone.. just confirmed it myself :D
Praise the 6!
Did you not know to kneel at the god statues?
You didn't mention the Fern Lizard pet.
23:00 look at it today one can get obby armor by also only being lv 2
How do you get to UW with out being ascended? The Scrolls?
@@TheLazySage7 After leaving pre-searing. Pay someone to run your character all the way to temple of ages. Then ask/pay for a speed clear eternal forgemaster.
@@SACRUM_VOTUM But I thought you couldn't go unless you where ascended or whe-no-su. At least it was long ago

I know I have a lv 2 char was in Obby but was hacked by Lynie who just took anything of value & salvage value like all my obbys on 10 toons. I kinda quit not long after that.

What about him? Good Content Creator, Use to watch his stuff when I played WoW. Seems like a cool guy.
did you ever kneel at the statues?
Yeah! Summons the gods representative for buffs/ teleports to elite areas. I know how they function in game, I'm more curious on the lore behind it. The mystery of why its there.

Ummm.. That aint dhuum but grenth, right?
