    About plastics - I've noticed that you sometimes heat up frozen rice in a plastic bag in the microwave. I'm no expert but potentially micro plastics could leak from the plastic bag to the rice when heated up so I'd remove the rice from the bag before heating it up.
    Thank you for showing us these glinpses of Nagasaki and your life!

    Plastic ? Like wraps and bags ? Bring a shopping bag or something similar for shopping or pack spare plastic bags. When weighing fresh produce, just apply the price tag directly on the vegetable. For cold storage, use something like Tupperware or any containers of sorts.

    I really love that Nagasaki educates residents and visitors about its history. I didn’t know about the connection to Portugal. It would be cool if someone, a restaurant or a wine merchant, would promote Portuguese wines. I wish I could find onions as fresh and as beautiful as the ones you harvested. Thanks for sharing a part of your life with us.

      Thank you for your warm comment ☺️. Nagasaki was established as an international trading port, initially for the Portuguese. Since then, it has welcomed visitors from all over the world, including China, Korea, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain, France, Russia, and the USA, among others. I believe Nagasaki has a rich history of international friendship. I hope you enjoy my videos ☺️

    Lovely video! Congratulations again on your increase in subscribers! Oh, and good luck on the compost. You might need to bury it deeper to keep animals from digging it up- depends on what kind of nighttime animals you have in your neighborhood. Plastics? We have some cloth vegetable bags that work for some things, but because many stores pre-package their food, it isn't always an option. For storage we've been making the move to glass containers. They still have plastic in their lids, but we avoid using plastic wherever possible. Oh, and I have a question: is there a reason why tofu is held in the hand while cutting it?

    Hi. I tend to discard plastic bags into household waste - purely because they are not one of the items that are recycled. Otherwise everything else that can be recycled goes into the recycle bins and are collected every two weeks. I do also tend to use the plastic bags to store rubbish in that can't be recycled or is labelled as household waste, here in the UK.

    Japan definitely uses more plastic than where I'm from (Chicago, IL, USA). Things are always individually wrapped - I was shocked to see individual carrots and bananas wrapped in plastic in some grocery stores in Japan. It just felt more wasteful, especially since some of these produce items don't even need plastic containment in the first place. Also many snacks have each piece individually wrapped INSIDE the bag itself (like some senbei I bought). At home, these aren't all recyclable, so I try my best to get rid of plastic and waste properly. For home/kitchen purposes, I use a lot of reusable containers made of glass or plastic, and sometimes I'll wash plastic sandwich baggies so I can reuse them again. Some restaurants put food in nice plastic takeaway containers that I'll also use for storing food later once I clean them. I'll reuse them as much as possible until it's time to recycle them.

    • @life_in_nagasaki
      @life_in_nagasaki  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Thank you for your comment and for sharing what it's like in Chicago, USA☺️. I've realized how much we Japanese consume plastics, and I want to take steps to reduce plastic consumption in my daily life, as much as possible without overburdening myself.

      @@life_in_nagasaki it's a good habit to have! I just visited Japan for my second time ever last month - I was actually in Nagasaki for a few days! it was so lovely.
      Whenever I went to a conbini or most other stores, I would often refuse bags when cashiers would ask. (i learned to say いらない a lot haha). I bring a reusable bag around with me for groceries and shopping in general. Here in Chicago, they charge you 7 cents per bag if you want to use their bags for your items, so most people carry reusable bags around with them. this is pretty common in most of the big cities in the US.

    Nice videos of "ordinary life." Tamanegi no ne no bubun wa oishii desuyo. Mottainai! For misoshiru: When you add miso, is the heat still on? If you add it after the heat is turned off, the nutritious elements of miso will be preserved.

      @life_in_nagasaki  Před 4 měsíci

      Wow, you know a lot about cooking and nutrition (and also Japanese!). I hadn't thought of eating the roots of onions. Thank you for the comment☺️

    • @sandyrothman2430
      @sandyrothman2430 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Not to eat the actual hair-like roots! Cut only those away, keeping the onion connected at the root end. That part of the onion is good to eat. I began studying traditional Japanese cooking through macrobiotics in the 1960s. (Do you know about it?) Kantan na Nihongo shika hanasemasen. Ohenji o arigato.

    • @life_in_nagasaki
      @life_in_nagasaki  Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you for the details! I'm not familiar with macrobiotics, but my friends have told me about it before. I think traditionalJapanese cooking is good for health, maybe.

    Slightly off topic but I've noticed watching your videos and other Japanese people's videos that you tend to cut tofu up in the palm of your hand. I was wondering if you could tell me why tofu is cut up in this manner and not on a chopping board? Thank you and can't wait to see your next video. Cheerio.

    • @life_in_nagasaki
      @life_in_nagasaki  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Thank you for your question!
      Actually, I'm not sure why we often cut tofu in our hands, and it seems like almost all Japanese are also unsure...lol
      I think we do it this way because:
      - It's a common tradition for us.
      - It's actually safer than it looks.
      - It's actually easier to cut the tofu in your hand than on a cutting board.
      - It's easier to transfer the tofu directly to the pan.
      - This avoids dirtying a cutting board.
      Hope this helps.. 😌

    • @life_in_nagasaki
      @life_in_nagasaki  Před 4 měsíci

      El nattō es un plato tradicional japonés elaborado con soja fermentada. Tiene una textura pegajosa, un olor penetrante y un sabor fuerte. Suele comerse en el desayuno con arroz, salsa de soja y aderezos como cebollas verdes. Es rico en proteínas, vitaminas y probióticos, y ofrece numerosos beneficios para la salud y una experiencia culinaria única 🫘
