  • I always struggled with the SAT essay section, but on my latest test I managed to improve from a 14 to a 21! This video covers everything I did differently between my essays and how you can improve too. At the end I also read my 7 6 8 essay out loud (plz don't judge it too harshly lmao) to give you a reference for that score.

    I realize I didn't mention it much in the video, but it really helps to have these memorized. I feel like there were parts of my essay that could have been much better if I cited more specific devices than what I did, and that's an easy way to improve! :)

    I've just stumbled across your channel in Reddit and couldn't have found it more helpful! As a self-preparing foreign student who strives for a 1550+ SAT score to apply in the US, I gathered a lot more confidence watching your videos about the format and scoring of the sections. Particularly, I've found your emphasis on vocabulary extremely useful! Love from Bulgaria!

      I'm so happy the tips worked!! :D I think the key for the reading portion is to incorporate what they deem the "most important" claim (again, this is a tad subjective...ugh) and to quote/paraphrase elements of the text prominently to show your understanding (this should be done in tandem with analyzing it). This means clearly stating the author's argument and the overall message of their work in your thesis and throughout your essay. They also give points for quoting and paraphrasing "skillfully" (this might mean quoting the proper moments of the text?), so it might help to carefully go over the student examples+scoring notes on their website to see what differentiates good quoting from perfect quoting in the graders' minds. Good luck--and great job so far!!

    Hey! I was just wondering, should I write completely with my own ideas, or should I refer to things that the prompt gives. ( Like quoting the author etc.) I'm taking the SAT in eight days and I'm super nervous!! Any other tips would be highly appreciated:) thx

    • @annas-universe
      @annas-universe  Před 3 lety +13

      Definitely include the author's quotes (or paraphrased versions of what they're saying) since you're making your argument about basically how the author argues what they're arguing. Along with the author's quote, you should name what device it's an example of (metaphor, personification, etc), and then after that you can be creative with your own ideas on how that functions to prove the author's points. From my own experience, I've found that CB likes when you follow the structure/examples they give in the instructions (so one paragraph about stylistic choices/rhetorical devices, one about facts/logic, and one about reasoning). Even though conforming and not being creative is terrible advice for writing in general, College Board doesn't seem to value creativity that much (which makes me so salty). Hope this helps!!

      Hi--I would recommend taking all the reading and writing sections of the practice tests available online and recording all your mistakes either in a spreadsheet or notebook so you can discover trends in your wrong answers! Remember that even just a little practice each day on Khan Academy or a practice test every few weeks can go a long way. I also have videos on the SAT reading and writing sections that go much more in-depth that might be helpful--good luck!! :D

    I too need to know how can i start my essay? What to start it with? What should i analayse?

    • @annas-universe
      @annas-universe  Před 3 lety +1

      You can start off your essay with an introduction--first ask a rhetorical question related to the passage that you'll answer within your essay or come up with a different interesting hook. Then, explain the very basics like the title and author and maybe some context for what the passage was about. Finally, end your introduction with your thesis statement, which should act as a summary of what you discuss all your body paragraphs. You'll want to mention any style choices (like metaphors, personification, word choice, etc), logic + data, and reasoning (this one's a little more general) within your essay (and thesis statement). You analyze the different strategies the author uses to make their point (as opposed to making an argument about what you think or anything like that). Here's some of the rhetorical devices that you can use as evidence and analyze--it helps to be able to recognize the most common of these in the text: blog.prepscholar.com/rhetorical-devices-list-examples
      Hope this helps! :)
