Thank you for solving a mystery. I found one in my Dad’s things and thought it was a pen light until I looked a bit closer. He did nuclear engineering at Diablo Canyon Power Plant in California. He kept the most amazing gadgets from all over the world. Clever boy. Cheers!

If you carefully shine a light directly into the other end you might be able to see from the camera

Not the best for long term use, They loose charge over time so it will show higher dose

After playing with various models (USA, USSR, UK, FRANCE...) for a year I found that they are very reliable even after 50 years. After 1 year in a drawer all of the dosimeters that I zeroed (they ones that worked and could be zeroed, about 90% of them) are still perfectly at zero. And dose measurement accuracy is also as good as new. Even though pen dosimeters are much cheaper than geiger counters they are more accurate because they use ionization chambers. Accuracy is usually within 10% compared to a modern calibrated geiger counter which is +-20% or even +-30% accurate.

No these are for lethal levels of radiation not close to background levels from Am241 inside a smoke alarm.

Thanks for the interesting information, but far too much repeated information. For a technical show-and-tell, write and use a script and keep it tight.
Also, when you can't show something directly, provide a drawing, schematic, etc. and then explain the drawing. Don't just tell us we can't see it...that adds no value at all and just wastes time.
