  • For this year's Puzzle Advent Calendar I created the Force Field Cube puzzle! It was designed with the goal of making something accessible to visually impaired individuals, relying on a keen sense of feel to solve. Thanks to Reese and the Filament Stories family for helping me test it out :)

    Absolutely the best birthday present; Reese loved it! And the tape trick to keep the magnets in, wow, that's brilliant and I’m totally using that from now on! Thanks so much for letting us be a part of your fun Advent calendar puzzle challenge 2023!!

    I LOVE this idea from the reason why it was made to the execution. Clearly the next step is to create different voxel shapes using the same methodology like 2 interlocking squares, a bowtie, and a pyramid (slight sarcasm). Hope your move went/ is going well

    Love the idea, and it was really cool to see Reese solving it! I have some leftover N52 magnets so I'm considering printing the 2x2 and 3x3 versions. I don't have E6000, would you say that super glue isn't strong enough to hold the magnets in properly? Also, I really like the astrolabicon wall behind you!

      Super glue should work, I've just noticed it sometimes discolors certain filaments... Plus I always get it on my fingers lol

    One of the first puzzles that got me into this hobby is one very similar to yours. Its called mattel force field magnetic puzzle.
    The differnece between yours is that mattel had different magnet strenghts in some sides , so you had to find the right polarity plus the right corresponding force or it would deform. I was 9 yo and I remember it's was the first time I used "critical thinking" to solve something.
    I used a butter knife to feel the strength of each side and a regular magnet to test polarity. It took me days to solve but I was hooked into puzzles ever since.

    Such a cool and unique idea. Imagine the feel of these puzzles. Devon, just a thought, but consider sending one of your puzzles to Tommy Edison (The Tommy Edison Experience). I'm sure he'll get a kick out of it. I was wondering Reese and Tommy share some mannerisms in the best way possible. If you are familiar with Tommy I think you'll know what I mean.

    I will prove it on paper later, but I doubt it to have only one solutions in most magnet setups. In case of the bigger cube the difficulty is bigger, but not that big. Just like in case of a 2D pussle if you have corner, edge, side and center cubes you already reduced the number of possible combinations. I would proceed it like a rubics cube. You have 8 corners, each has 3 rotations. Therefor you have 8!x3 combinations (80 thousand). However by concentrating on one of the sides first you reduce it to 48, so you can eliminate the majority of wrong combinations. Also there must be multiple solutions! If you created a 4x4x4... well that would be a real challange!

      Thanks! The green thing is just a magnet I stuck onto my stack of magnets to make sure I don't accidentally install them backwards

    I wonder if there would be a way for incorrect sides to have the magnet orientation actuate a blocker so you knew without a doubt those sides aren't meant to go together

      There is a vintage one that had different magnetic strengths so you had to match polarity and strength.

    Did you thought about trying to do two concentric magnets (outer ring + inner disc) to increase possible configurations & even bigger puzzles?

    • @make.anything
      @make.anything  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I considered something like that, but they already use so many magnets :p

  • @michael1234252

    Actually you created a new version of an old puzzle from the 80's Called Force Field by Mattel.

  • @SeraphimKnight
    @SeraphimKnight Před 5 měsíci

    If you made the cubes so that all faces need covers where you can't tell what's an "outside" piece and what is a magnet right away, it would make for a much harder challenge.

    I found out that there are only 4 possible polarity combinations for the vertex piece, 8 for the edge piece, 12 for the face piece, and 10 for the core piece. This means there will always be duplicates for the vertex and edge pieces.

    • @make.anything
      @make.anything  Před 5 měsíci +1

      You're right. I considered putting two magnets per face to reduce possible solutions but the solid 3x3 is already challenging and uses a lot of magnets 😋

    A 2x2 cube puzzle with 3 magnets per piece and rotational symmetry will have 4 unique pieces, right?

    How about a octahedron puzzle with 6 pieces and 4 magnets per piece? That would allow for 6 unique magnet configurations.
