I totally missed the fact that lights last forever when I was playing this game. I'm so conditioned to conserve battery/fuel in these games that I never even used the lights figuring I'd "save them for later"

Yeah exactly, like TLD lanterns where you have to conserve and go fishing for lantern oil.
