    I feel sad for the people in kpop who have things to say, music they want to make, but they can't because they are not allowed, because their companies are too busy chasing the next popular cash grabbing concept. It's not that good music doesn't come out of that as well, but I can't imagine it's fun to always be pushed around like a puppet without a say in the artistic process.

    I think you can't even connect with your fav idols properly when they don't produce/write their songs. Like artist are artist when they can express themself with different form as music, painting or dancing. But if they don't put themself into it it's somehow....empty?

    • @eileencritchley4630
      @eileencritchley4630 Před měsícem +6

      i don't mind if the artist doesn't always write their own songs if what they are singing eg the topic of the song has meaning for them something they can relate to want to talk about but can't write it. That they choose that song as it expressed what they wanted to say. I don't mind if they only give their ideas and ask someone else to write those idea's into the lyrics. I started that way then added some lyrics, then wrote my own. I composed my first piece of music to a old poem that really spoke to me. So I understand artist growth and freedom to choice, try and have idea's. I feel so bad for those who aren't really involved at all in music but just have to do what they are told.

    BTS likes Zach a lot because he always asks in dept questions about their work and he's always well-informed (he makes his homework and does some research before the interview). I believe Zach was one of the very few that RM chose to get interviewed by as part of his promotion for his Indigo album...

    Zach is one of the best people who interviewed BTS and I think he was so used to talking to BTS and having very interesting conversations with them that he thought it would be the same with other groups. When he realized that many of them were not able to explain their concept, talk about the production, lyrics, etc. he just gave up... It's a shame for the bands who are really involved in their songs but I understand the reasons behind Zach's choice.
    I love BTS for so many reasons and I love their music for so many reasons too. They manage to give me different emotions, to make me cry, to smile, to give me chills, etc. The lyrics are always more meaningful in general than many people think, that's why I'm wary of reaction videos about BTS. I've seen many people disrespect BTS by either laughing at their look, or at the visuals of their MV, saying it's a bit "cringe", etc. But in no way they'll go further and look for a real meaning in their lyrics, nor to understand the MV like for IDOL for example.

    I feel like people have been bringing up iterations of this idea for some time now but the common response I see from many kpop fans is basically "Shut tf up and stop trying to ruin kpop". The fans seem to enjoy things exactly as it is. They either genuinely don't want things to progress or they don't have faith that their group can/will evolve enough to accomplish that so they're pretending not to want it to save face. The potential is definitely there to see improvement and to have more balance. BTS for example have a lot of fun bops along with the deeper stuff. It's not that anyone has to sacrifice one for the other.
    The common concensus is that Bang PD, BTS and ARMY are all working together to destroy kpop at they know it. So stans of other groups act like they need to protect the "genre"/industry from our influence whenever we discuss things that could be improved upon. To insinuate that any group's discography is anything less than perfect is an attack on them. So I think videos like Boracity's is great for ARMY to reflect on things and spark discourse amongst ourselves on the media landscape that we and BTS are operating within, but it's not for us to expect or want more from the industry/community.
    They seem to enjoy a certain level of status quo so we should respect that and not try to push for them to do anything different. We would do well to mind our business and let people do what they like.

  • @roguechevelle
    @roguechevelle Před měsícem +8

    Great boracity video. I think a good take away from this is let the artists be involved in their music, it doesn't have to mean writing it yourself not everyone is good at that but being able to choose songs for the album or have some type of input is the best way to have the singers connect with their own work. I feel very bad for those idols that want to be more hands on and want to feel a connection to their own work but are stunted by the companies control. It can lead to singers becoming dissatisfied with their careers and have far more of a chase of burnout.

    I think the only consistent concepts kpop albums made since the older generations would be the "winter/summer" comebacks. the whole albums centered around the things you experience throughout the season. A love song about watching the snowflakes fall, feeling lonely during Christmas, and celebrating the holidays together. Same with the summer album. There's the fun summer party song, the sad "our last summer together", or the "I fell in love with you in the summer of 2005".

    Like Seb mentioned, Ateez definitely have the "concept" and the "kpop concept" from the very beginning until now. If you touch the surface of their overall "kpop concept", they're dimension-travelling pirates - as crazy as that sounds. They will continue to develop their music following the lore or worldbuilding but ultimately this part of Ateez is the "kpop concept" per se. Now the actual concepts of their album series and the meanings behind them.
    Ateez's very first - the Treasure series has a concept of "aspiration", seeking for what you want and reaching for your goals. Very obvious from the album series name, they are embarking on a journey to find treasure. Hence the music from this era is very grand-like or theatrical, and in the kpop concept aspect they're pirates. You can notice their lyrics in the intro of the series "It doesn’t matter what you dream for. What is your treasure?" and to the very last outro in the epilogue album "Did you find your dream? Did you find your treasure?"
    Fever series is sentimental and more relatable, the concept surrounds "youth and its struggles" of what a teenager would go through, including Ateez's own personal experiences whether it's parents disagreeing with your dreams, to the small details of struggling to move out of your own home. It also touches on topics like following your own morals and watching your manners which you learn growing up. The kpop concept side goes into the "school concept" but it ultimately connects to youth. In the lore, this timeline happens before Treasure series.
    The World series, which was brought up, has the concept of "empowerment" and "individuality", like rebellion and finding freedom. The kpop concept is dystopia; a small group of people battling against the government that bans any form of art, music or dance, taking place in a dystopian universe from the lore. Seb's reaction to the first The World album briefly explains the flow of their battle with the order of the tracks. In the last album of the series, they party it out since they won and found freedom, but still have conflicts of "With all the effort we put in to get here, can we really return to the serene moments back then?".
    The new album series Golden Hour I believe the concept is "reality" or "various facets of life", reminiscing back the happy memories we had in our life but it leaves you thinking as we have these moments, if our hearts will be left emptier. Having a reflection on the past, drinking our current worries away, or going to work as a part of our ordinary lives.
    Among their comebacks they have many different "kpop concepts". The lore aspect ties the entire discography together, which is really nice. Though if you notice, even the messages behind them all connect together in a timeline.

    It depends on how much I like an artist as to whether I will listen to a complete album. Like I love BTS so if they released a 30 song album I would listen to the whole album. But there are so many artists I just casually listen to where I don't listen to the albums, I just listen to the main singles that are played on the radio. I was definitely more inclined to listen to full albums before the streaming era where if you wanted to hear an artist's songs you had to buy the album.

    One thing I really dislike about the original video is that clips of Stray Kids keep getting put whwn the video is talking about other kpop groups not having a concept and that makes 0 sense to me. They're one of the only kpop groups who have one or more members as a lead producer and writer on every single song. All of their albums have a general theme or a message and they have lore that goes in with those messages.
    Another thing is some of the videos listed under not having a concept or a meaning DO actually have one.

    The companies/labels want to see instant success. Giving your group freedom to show and evolve their musicality means possibly starting off with not so great music or music that might not resonate with the general public. Companies don’t want to give their groups time to grow and evolve because they want to see their ROI asap.
    Let’s be real…I personally think RMs new RPWP album was a masterpiece. But it’s not a sound that the general public likes. But you see musicians praise it highly. If RM was a new artist that put out this album….it wouldn’t get the streams it got. From a company/label standpoint, they would very likely lose money on it. So why would they allow their artist to create an album like that? Why not create a 2 min catchy song that’s TikTok ready and push it to go viral instead? That will bring in more listeners and streams and that just becomes a vicious cycle.

      They should be able to identify more now with their music - but I'm not so sure that that is true for their BP music.
      I think they will be more in controll now with their solo careers since they own that now completly
      I assume that will mean also more identification with their music, too.
      What I still don't know is how involved they were with their music after this interview - especially with their solo albums under their debut label.
