  • Bad planning methods can damage team morale and prevent teams from improving the systems they maintain. In this talk, Sam Handler from Shopify explains how his attempts to fix poor infrastructure planning processes through Agile methods failed. Drawing from this experience, he offers several principles that can help infrastructure teams improve the way they work.

Some good points in here, a more appropriate title might be: I made a Huge Mistake: Implementing Scrum on Infrastructure teams (similar challenges exist for service delivery teams, scrum was not defined for that kind of stuff). Agile principles and values are still valid. Good that you looked at Kanban but for sure other alternative frameworks can help or... bake your own, use the retro's to define experiments and run them, hold yourselves accountable for the results and keep what works. Rinse and repeat. For demo's you can make sure your audience is suitable and rather than go deep into scripts or codes etc. (unless the audience are really keen on that) focus on what can we do now that we couldn't before and why should we care? What does it do for us, any good stats to highlight the fabulous work the team have done?

Sounds like you might benefit from an IT quality program like The Stable Framework. It's an implementation of Lean concepts for Agile. Some people call it "Stable Agile." It's new and based off of The Phoenix Project, Kanban, and other points you've mentioned.

I work as a freshly promoted account manager team leader managing 12 people and despite the vastly different industries, these principles are going to help me immensely so thank you - I've found so much value in this

I'm not sure why I got an ad on Facebook for this. I mean, I'm the target audience somewhat, I work and teach in IT, and I'm teaching Agile this week, though what is the sell? Also boggles the mind as I have been discussing Eisenhower matrix, did not post that anywhere and yet the ad I saw started with that. Best wishes.

I like a lot of this but the bit about the guys just “knowing” when they need to do something about an expiring cert… I hope there’s actually some process behind that!

This presentation was pretty insightful, BUT it's waayyy too long and rambling.
