When I was little, and just starting violin, I wanted to learn this for so long. Then I actually got to it in the Suzuki book, and suddenly I hated it for a long time. I couldn't explain why at the time, I just did. Everyone around me was disappointed because they all loved the piece too, and they were sad I hated playing it and never did unless basically begged to.
Now I've heard Augustin play it and I suddenly have fallen back in love with it. I think I've figured out why I hated it though: the key. It's so beautifully bittersweet in Gb. When transposed to D, it's suddenly way too happy and the entire character that probably made me like it in the first place is lost. The transposition greatly shallowed and detracted from it.
That's not even to mention Augustin's amazing interpretation which breathed new life into a piece I had perceived as cliche for a very long time!

I totally agree about the transposition - it has a different color and feeling in G Flat.
Schubert's Impromptus no. 3 in G flat for piano is another example like this (it was first published and known only in a version in G Major, but is originally in G Flat and so much better)

So true..... transposition makes all the difference..... I too wondered how does others make it sound so wonderful and me here am not able to reach the expected beauty of the music..... Thanks a lot of this information.....

Agree . But the Suzuki version is perfect for young violinists , more easy . All my students love it ! Later , I hope they will be able to play the Gb version .
We have also to admit Augustin is able to make this love to everyone !

Completely agree - I suppose one of the marks of a great musician is that even smaller pieces are played with great care and attention and respect for the composer, as a concerto. Nigel Kennedy and Joshua Bell have both done CDs of smaller pieces (one of Elgar, the other of Kreisler) which show the same attention to detail and love of the music. Kennedy even includes the 6 very easy pieces in first position by Elgar and they are simply beautiful. Joshua Bell's interpretations of Kreisler are in the tradition of his teacher, Josef Gingold.

There's so much tenderness in this playing. A potent mix of tenderness, simplicity, delicateness. Lightness. Like leaves kissing your face as they fall gently to the earth! All that enmeshed in a hint of darkness. Hysteria. I can keep listening. Wondering how to coax these sweet tones out of my violin. Bravo!
