To continue with Duke Ellington: "It doesn't mean a thing if you ain't got that SWING".
A famous US Dixieland bandleader told me on a Jazzseacruise: "Of a band, 66% is the rhythm section. 33% is the wind, trumpet, clarinet and trombone, at 11% each. A good rhythm section makes the band sound good, hot, swingy, even if the wind players are poor. However, if the rhythm section is lousy, even the world's best wind players cannot make the band sound good." He is a trumpet player - by the way.

Banjoplayer: Do the 2-4 only. Lose the upstroke - completely. Even when you do 4-4, they all should be downstrokes. Upstrokes are for various rhythm patterns, triplets and tremolos and the rare 1-3s. Remember, your 2-4 downstroke should be a fraction delayed. You want to swing, and that will do it. Bass: do more 1-3 loss some of the 4/4, it's too much. You want to swing.
The nature of "hot, swinging" rhythm is not easily captured in words. Jazz writers are still struggling with the concept.
