Um, Aliens was a straight up action movie.
Alien was more psychological terror and a monster movie in space.
I think this is by far the best review you have done so far. Realy well done.
i found the game way more enjoyable when turning off hud and motion sensor alert then turn down the brightness very low and turn the lightsb off and its a little better. though the dlc with hicks is better than the main cAMPAIGN

In a twisted kind of way Aliens: Colonial Marines set a standard for game developers to never let a new game fail as badly as this game did.
Excellent review, and excellent commentary Mark! I was giving you virtual ^5s when you described how the movies would be made today. The first one was scary as hell. Simple horror formula; Characters trapped inside 'the house' with a big scary monster stalking them. The atmosphere and suspense were palpable. You don't need celebrities or rap for that, just good writing. Resident Evil did okay with it too. Down here in Louisiana, we have mutant nutria rats. Seriously their teeth are orange.

Yeah this review reminded me the Fallout 3 review back in the day, at the time Mark only was reviewing older games and it was nice to hear not only review but his perspective on games in general
I totally dig the philosophical turn this review took. I found myself nodding and agreeing to nearly every sentence Mark spoke. What a damn cool guy.
Got to love CGR, no-nonsense, no bullshit, just an honest video game fan's observations.
This is probably the most positive review of this game I've seen anywhere and even then it boiled down to 'might be worth rent if you're a fan of the movies'.

I know it's CLASSIC game room but I always enjoy hearing Mark's take on new games as opposed to others. He's like me and comes from a time when if a game didn't have a solid singleplayer it was shit no matter how good the multiplayer was. He truely reviews a game for what it is
Yes, the score to the first Alien by Jerry Goldsmith was terrifying and James Horner's score to Aliens was action packed. Good stuff!

I bought this around 2014 and it was a great game. The multiplayers are still up aswell. I think the patches really made a difference.

I use to be a hardcore online fanatic for AVP2 as well. I still think it's the best Aliens crossover game to date. I played it for 4 years until the servers got shutdown. Very sad day.

They should've officially renamed this Call of Duty: Colonial Marines. I liked this game at first, but quickly realized it is NOT as cool as the movie. I wanted an awesome creature feature game and I got gun battles with humans most of the time. Think I'll just play AVP 2010. At least I'll know I'm screwed on harder difficulties.
90% of the game was against humans, this is not fuckin fair, i was wanting more vents, i was wanting more of that radar, i was wanting more solo missions, and also MORE FUCKIN ALIENS
Never owned a PS1, but it looks awesome in that Doom sort of way.
Alien trilogy is fuckin amazing, i still got the original cd and my ps1 :3 *****
What's funny is that my little brother, who is a HUGE Aliens fan, loves the game. And personally, the game doesn't look (emphasis on look) that bad, I've seen my bro play it and honestly it looks pretty fun.

I got the collecters edition for free a my work place part of a give away thing when it was just starting out. I loved the alien figure and the bonus stuff it came with. Other then that the games all right i find the aleins tend be a pain in the ass btw as always great reviews.

Best Aliens game is "Aliens vs Predator" circa 1998 on the PC. Lots of great multiplayer memories on that one.

I hoped that the game would bring back the love of the film but it fell short which is a shame, BUT there is still fun too have in the game. Thank you Mark for a descent 'fair' review unlike all the others !
I just don't understand how so much went wrong with this game I mean if they just released that one E3 demo mission (Which wasn't even in the game) That alone would be better than this whole game, plus why are the visuals so terrible in this game Alien vs. Predator was released 3 years prior to this one & it looks ridiculously better than this game, especially the lighting.

There's talk floating around that the 2011 demo was actually a custom render made to resemble gameplay, as opposed to actual in-game footage.
Considering the developmental quagmire this title emerged from, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was actually the case and we were all duped by it.
Mark made a good point i don't find aliens in aliens all that scary because they're so famous and so known
Instead of it saying "Fight the Fear", It should say "Fear the Fight". As Mark said, they're not action movies, they're psychological terror.
Of course, because when Ripley flung open a huge airlock, vented the ship and then closed it again and was able to breath with ease again...that was totally realistic!

I hear you on that one. I loved AvP on the PC but, for some reason, AvP2 just fell a bit flat for me....and, to this day, I can't quite put my finger on why.
I agree, I still like the original AVP for the PC as well, the sequal was good but not as good as it could have been.
I would like to know how many people got the game as a fps, as to a tie in to the story line left missing for so long?
@InecomCompany, You got it right about how times have changed in cinema. If they did Alien and Aliens today, it would be Kristen Stewart or Taylor Swift along side Tom Cruise, the Rock or Christian Bale selling them. The story/plot would be minor since Micheal Bay would be directing, Nolan would be too dark, the music would be Gaga, Fun and Maroon 5, or Nickleback, and would be promoted and sponsered by McD's, Pepsi and Apple. Ben Stiller, Micheal Cera or Jack Black (Ferrell?) would be Hudson.
The game avp which has been out for years, for ps3/360/pc, has a really good marines section, as well as alien and predator sections.

Well, here is one thing good about Aliens Colonial Marines: I have never seen any of the Aliens films, but thanks to every video game reviewer who has had the misfortune of playing this game--I am going to go buy the collection and watch it later this week.

Colonial Marines was a game that started out confident, developed by Timegate Studios, was shot down by Gearbox because they wanted to save more money for a different game. Randy Pitchford, and the developers at Gearbox, have now been sighted as selfish liars, which I agree with very much. It was an awesome game that went Sonic 06 on us. Timegate went out of business and 200+ people lost their jobs because of those liars.

Thank you for an actual good review of this game and despite the hate that it got i really enjoy the hell out of it. And if you have a ps3 and ps plus its going for 9 bucks 14.99 regular i think a lot of people would find that appropriate
If you thought acid blooded squirrels were bad, here in Oregon the raccoons have laser missiles and cloaking devices.
You should review the first two AVP games on the PC!

This is the aliens game, that is the alien game.
AI is overrated, i'm being completely honest.
I saw this game in a second hand budget store for £1.50 (That's just under $2). I had to think long and hard before handing over my cash. I suppose I just had to see for myself whether it really is as bad as the legends say. So yes this is the first game I have bought deliberately to see just how disappointed I can be. I haven't yet played it but I will be impressed if it can somehow make me feel as if I've wasted my money when it costs the same about as a bar of chocolate and a can of coke.
Still if it is that bad I have Alien Isolation on standby to wash the bad taste out off my mouth.

I'm waiting for the price of this to go down on this, because I love the films, it looks like it has decent moments, and I managed to find some fun moments in Duke Nukem Forever, so I could easily have fun with this.
When Mark kills the alien at 4:26, you can hear the sound of a boar from WoW being killed.

I can quote the entire film, not just the memorable lines. lol If you have this game on PC, there are mods that drastically improves the alien AI, increases their speed to where they dart around the map, and even makes the acid pretty deadly. PC gamers should look for the mods. BTW Hudson's actually in the game. You can find him as an easter egg of sorts.
great review mark, yeah this game was so hyped for but after watching angry joes review as well it became all too obvious this game wasn't finished, such a shame.

You have to play on Hardened or Ultimate Badass to get Aliens worth fighting. Even then they are limited via AI.
