    The shootout scene is as old as cinema itself - from Thomas Edison filming Annie Oakley doing trick shots in 1894 to John Wick’s balletic shoot ‘em ups over a century later. And as film language evolved over the decades, so did the techniques used to present the shootout scene. In this video, we break down the various techniques of how to shoot a shootout scene using two polar opposite examples.
    Heat Shootout Scene - Directing Breakdown
    The Heat shootout scene, directed by Michael Mann, is a fantastic example of how to direct a gunfight for pure realism. As a director, how does Mann make us feel like we are there on the street in the middle of the crossfire? First, staging the shootout scene on location in downtown Los Angeles helps the audience feel the reality of the situation. When you hear the sound design of the Heat shootout scene, it’s like nothing we’ve heard before. That’s because while most movies add the sound effects in post-production, what we’re hearing in this scene is all production sound. The camera is also another tool that Mann and his DP Dante Spinotti use to bring reality to the shootout scene. The camera mostly shoots from eye level and with long lenses that create a claustrophobic effect as the police surround McCauley and his men.
    The Matrix Lobby Shootout Scene - Directing Breakdown
    On the opposite side of the spectrum from the Heat shootout scene is The Matrix lobby shootout. Instead of 1:1 realism, The Matrix shootout scene, directed by Lilly and Lana Wachowski, goes big and bold for a stylized presentation. Most obvious is the mixing of frame rates, including the now-iconic slow motion. The sound design, too, is more expressive - specifically, the reverbed pinging of empty bullet casings on the ground. There is also a fluidity to the shootout scene in the form of cutting on action, eye trace, and a controlled camera that allows the spectacle to unfold in front of it.
    Most filmmakers present the shootout scene somewhere in between these two extremes. No matter the formal techniques used, a great shootout scene can be thrilling and beautiful.

  • @Yvaelle
    @Yvaelle Před 2 lety +27

    The biggest takeaway for me was how the cinematography reflected the characters experiences in best examples (Heat, Matrix, Atomic Blonde). In Heat it's meant to be a hyper-realistic gunfight, so the camera is gradually shifting from the more panoramic shots to the long lens claustrophic shots as the characters feel more and more engulfed. In The Matrix, seeing Neo and Trinity's dominance reflected in the controlled shots, the smooth glides, the eye-tracking (really cool), the slow motion, all just emphasizes their complete control of the situation: despite it being one of the shootiest shootouts put to camera at the time (like 40 people firing automatic weapons in a confined space).
    In Atomic Blonde while not done quite as well as the other examples - you get a mix of the two. The long cut action emphasizes that Lorraine is completely in control - it's a single motion for her through the whole fight - she made a plan and executed it. But you still get the claustrophobic shot at the start inside the ice bucket, suggesting the nervousness of a realistic fight: she's trapped and they know she's a spy - just as the camera is suddenly trapped in the ice bucket. Then once the first few are cleared, you get the couch filling the frame suggesting the same absence of information Lorraine is working with - she expected reinforcements through the door - she's using sound alone, nearly the same as the audience (we can peek over the top), to plan her attack.
    What I would like to see is for someone to flip the tools around next. Show us a well-crafted gunfight from a non-combatants perspective - use claustrophobic camera work and minimal information (like the AB couch) to underscore their incompetence in that moment, flip eye-tracking around to maximize their sensation of disorientation (track left, next right, etc). You could even use both styles in a classic hero's journey to show the difference in competence the hero gains over the story - in the inciting incident the gunfight might be filmed as a Reverse Matrix, maximize audience confusion. Then do some hyper-realistic Heat gunfights in the middle, and end your climatic fight with a stylized cinematography like the Matrix: to indicate they are now hyper-competent.

  • @heisenbergbad5375
    @heisenbergbad5375 Před 2 lety +7

    John Woo is a great exemple at stylised shootouts, the guns are almost an extension of the character's arms, and he captures them always in slow-motion to make it clearer and more epic, with tons of debris flying. The Matrix's shootout is hugely influenced by his work in Hong-Kong.

    • @StudioBinder
      @StudioBinder  Před 2 lety +2

      John Woo is great!

    • @patj462
      @patj462 Před rokem

      ... his shootouts are not just 'stylised' - they are "super-hyper-stylised" - and mind-bogglingly unrealistic!
      Mission Impossible II came out 1 year after The Matrix - and the 'action' scenes are still painfully, childishly dumb and boring....
      It physically hurts when these two movies are mentioned in the same sentence.

    The final shootout in Unforgiven is a classic of the revisionist western genre. It was foreshadowed in so many ways through the movie (particularly by Gene Hackman) and is made all the more significant given it is Clint Eastwood in the middle of it. While there, though, a shout out to the bookends in The Wild Bunch. They were revolutionary at the time. The final shoot out in Butch Cassidy is excellent, too, particularly the freeze frame with the sound still going,

    A video on shootout n no mention of shootout scenes from bad boys 2, the highway chase gunfight n the finale gunfight scene? Now that's disappointing! Those 2 r the most badass shootout scenes shot for a movie, ever!

    Since we're in the topic of shootout, I'd like to give shout-outs to Sam Peckinpah and what I assumed to be a tribute for him by Walter Hill, 'Extreme Prejudice'.
