Apparently the best option is to buy from an organic tree farm - this helps the climate and environment, furthers regular replantation and prevents urbanisation of woodland areas! If coniferous wood is abundant it's easy enough to just use storm droppings, or merely prune a gigantic tree for a small indoor Yule celebration. Or maybe just a dowel, or even another branch without much greenery as the central trunk of an artificial/natural tree. Then other prunings or storm droppings for the needled branches. One can take up to 1/3 of a well established plant, the perennials and trees, and the plant will do just fine. No need to cut a whole tree, but if you live in a wooded area sapling cuts often regrow. Also the Forest benefits from sensible human prunings. Sawdust is food for many a good fungi.
A Rosemary tree, from pruned rosemary bushes, assembled into tree shape by sticks and strings and things. They even flower sometimes in winter, little purple blossoms. Are those Rowan Ash berries in one of your arrangements?
I’ve been into peganism and started when I was 12. My parents found out and put me through intense catholic “cleaning” as they called it. I’m so happy I’m finally able to learn about peganism again and this was the first year my family (husband and daughter) celebrated Yule instead of a Christian version of Christmas 😊❤️
As a german beginner practitioner it's great to see the german side of these traditions!! It was difficult to find something from a german's perspective cuz most witchy content creators I found are located in the US or the UK!!
A great resource is the book "Pagan Christmas, the plants, spirits and rituals at the origins of Yuletide" by Ratsch and Muller-Ereling. It's very readable, filled with illustrations, and explains so many of the customs we practice today.
My mother is German & has always decorated tree with apples, and cardinals for each deceased family member. As I learned the meaning behind so many of our traditions & my own beliefs we began to build on the traditions each year . Lovely video, going to make the bread this year .
As a person whose of jewish heritage, it is always fascinating for me to see this winter traditions in other cultures, we don’t really have weather were we live but it is always inspiring me to see every year how people honor this darker part of the year around the world, the traditions and culture which they preserve and celebrate. This is a time for holding light through fire, while the sun is resting. It is an inspiring time. On Hanukah there are very little decorations as far as I know, if you have children you might set a bowl of dreidels somewhere in your main living area, there are gambling games and children always create their own little games with the dreidels. you will make deep fried food, the story of hannuka has to do with a tiny bottle of oil that lasted 8 days during a time of war, so oily food is traditionally associated with Hanukah- Sufganiot (a jelly filled donut), latkes, and on. You will also serve them hot, since it might be cold outside. You will set a Menorah on the kitchen window, and light a candle each day. And you will celebrate this candle lighting with family and friends by singing special songs and prayers. If the kids are good, they will get some money (or chocolate coins) from their grandparents, that is called Hanukah Gelt, this is associated with good luck and abundance. I haven’t celebrated Hanukah in a long time though since I don’t actively practice Judaism. It is not at all like Christmas, or yule, but it is definitely a wintery holiday.

I love the Indian Festival of Lights also- it's called Dewali. From what I gather, they set lanterns in the river to light the way for the souls who have passed that year to find their way to the other side. It's already happened this year, closer to Thanksgiving.
I agree! Am christian (not particularly practicing) but seeing stuff from other religions/belief systems is very interesting. And it gives me a chance to reflect on questions such as “why is it that people try so hard to get people to believe what they do and persecute those that do not believe/convert.
Yule is coming again, so I had to revisit your videos. Winter is one of my favourite times of the year. I love how everything is dark and cold outside but inside there's so much light and coziness. Preparing for the Sun's return and waiting for nature to be reborn again is such a beautiful journey. I love how this time of the year teaches us patience.
I have been excited learning about pagan, german, and other cultures traditions and holidays and seeing what I can adopt into my own. My family doesnt celebrate holidays, only I do, so these times of the year can be really depressing for me. Happy Yuletide! I've been a Norse heathen for many years and I love this season. You have a wonderful energy and exuberance, and I enjoyed hearing about ways that close neighboring traditions celebrate the holiday. I have to let you know, though, that the picture you showed at 8:05 is actually Odin/Wotan, and not Thor/Donar as stated. Odin is known for having sacrificed one of his eyes for wisdom and is associated with his two ravens, Huginn and Muninn. Odin would sometimes walk among mortals, disguised as one, and gauge how he was treated. Since hospitality was considered a noble virtue, those who showed such generosity were rewarded.
As far as I'm concerned the Perfect Yule would be spending a day at this woodland witch's hut with all her traditional items and magical cloak! Such a folk tale vibe you've got, love it!

When you mentioned German, Slavic and Scandinavian traditions. I was quickly drawn to your videos on ancient customs. I am of all three backgrounds and feel such a kindred spirit towards these things. You brought back feelings I haven't felt since I was a child when we felt free to embrace old stories and folklore. This was a fun video and a great memory refresher. I'm not sure if I've told this story on your vlog page, but I have a December 6 or St Nicholas Day memory. It was my first year in Berchtesgaden and I had turned 8 on the 2nd. In school our German teacher (also school librarian) had been telling us tales of Yule, and she had told the story of St Nicholas in his Bishop's robes would parade through the streets with his "associates" , Black Peter, Krampus and the Butenmandl. Being a kid who lived in story books I believed every word and I was terrified I hadn't been good enough. That night my parents took us in town to watch them parade through the streets, if you haven't seen a picture of the Butenmandl they are covered in hay and snarling animal masks and carrying whips. The noise they made was terrible and as an American child in 1960 it was the stuff of nightmares. We went home after the parade, but the terror did not end; St Nicholas and several Butenmandl stopped at each of the houses where we lived. Now I had put my shined shoes on the porch, hoping I had been good enough to get them filled with candy. But I was afraid I hadn't been good and he would have the Butenmandl beat me, put me in a sack and hang me from a tree. I hid under my bed and refused to come out while I could hear them in our complex. I'm glad this isn't done anymore, but it did get me thinking about being good. Oh and I did get candy in my shoes.
Oh nooo 😅 I am feeling sorry for 8-year-old you! ❤️ I also remember being a bit scared of the Nikolaus and his helpers when I was a kid. In my area we didn't have the Butenmandl but the Wilde Drud, Krampus / Knecht Ruprecht and some other furry creatures. They were always nice when they came to the house but they definitely look scary! 😄 My son has never seen them (Nikolaus visits are not allowed due to Corona at the moment) but I am soooo excited to see how he will react 😁 have a magical Yule ❤️

Tree farms give the farmer an income from land and maybe prevents the land from becoming a housing development or a strip mall with a giant parking lot. I have no problem with farmed holiday trees. I don’t consider them unsustainable. At least if they aren’t sprayed with all kinds of chemicals but that can be any kind of farming. I don’t think they are replacing natural forest in most places but are transitional farm land.

I noticed that these days Christmas has little to do with the birth of Christ: it's very money centric and who has more items to clutter their homes with around this time of the year. There's nothing wrong with celebrating Xmas even as a pagan. And if you celebrate Yule, you're even closer to many of the traditions that have lasted through the centuries. Try not to think too much of how Christians tortured pagans: pagans also did it to the Christians, so the 2 religions are almost even.

Christianity is inherently oppressive within its belief system and has done extensive damage to many many people, and this is not my own opinion, this is factual in its history and theology. It's not "almost even." There is no such thing when it comes to Christianity, and pagans are not trying to "get even," and it's vile to even suggest that is the way to come about it. Of course, Christmas has become capitalistic, that's how the US works (if you mean within the US), all holidays are opportunities for profit. Christmas is the bastardized version of Yule, appropriated by Christians and claimed as their own, with the claim Jesus was born in December, which isn't true. They made that fit into December to overshadow the pagan traditions of Yule, and steal our traditions under the guise of being ways to celebrate the Christian God. It's widely agreed upon by scholars and theologians that Jesus was born in the springtime, not winter. So Christians could be celebrating his birth & resurrection at the same time in the springtime, but instead they are stealing our traditions from Yule (and in the springtime, Ostara too) to celebrate their own beliefs. Nothing is wrong with celebrating Christian holidays as a Christian. However, appropriating other traditions is wrong.

I was a religious studies major so the part about swastikas made me lol - such rich history and spiritual significance Al around the world from many different peoples shouldn’t be marred by an authoritarian regime. The rolls look lovely! I always loved Yule - I grew up in a Unitarian Universalist church and the Winter Solstice service and Christmas Eve candlelight service are my favorites! I was born in Christmas so I dunno if I’m biased… now I’m almost 30 and embracing my ancestral traditions as a form of spiritual practice. It feels good to honor my heritage and have something special to pass on. Love the witchy vibes!
The sad part is that Christianity stole traditions from the lands they conquered and forced them into joining that religion in a "join us or die" kind of way. And most people don't know about the real origins of what people celebrates. I really like your video.
So true! 💕 Depending on region and country though it wasn't actually forced ☺️ from historic documents we know that a lot of people favoured the new religion (speaking solely about Europe here - of course a lot of other countries in other parts of the world were forced into Christianity 🙁).
I've traveled to many countries in Asia, Europe and South America, and one common theme is how different the Christian traditions and practices are from community to community. While it is true that many places (including the community that I'm from) were coerced into converting, with respect to the traditions, I think it was a genuine effort on their part to integrate christianity into the communities traditions instead of isolating people from their history. I'm no expert though, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.
They know but whine about it being pagan and Satanic. I say if you don’t like it, give the customs back. You won’t be left with much though. The pope ordered the missionaries to incorporate the old beliefs and customs to encourage conversion. They want to have their cake and eat it too.
@Trinity M I'm from a small Asian community, so I can only speak for myself and my experiences. That being said, there are various sects in christianity as well as other religions. Some are more tolerant while others arent. Religion is complex; people are complex. Secondly, it's absurd to assume that traditions were carried on linearly. Historically speaking, there were an endless number of disasters, invasions, migrations, and innovations. Traditions changed, Gods changed, religion changed, people changed. What we know about history is only from the records kept. Life is more complex than that. Perspective is relative, and it's impossible to know anything for sure.
I've always enjoyed the pagan tradition! And with viking/norse ancestry I have been study of lot my ancestor's history and mythology. Would be fun to share some of the stories around the bonfire this year.

I've been reading all of these stories in the book The Old Magic Of Christmas by Linda Raedisch. It's such a good book. But I will admit, hearing you explain them on video has helped me grasp the names.... I lived in Germany for 4 years and know a little German, but sometimes those words are a bit hard to pronounce so this totally helped! Thank you for this!
Yule was my mother's favorite. I loved waking up and seeing untouched snow, the sunlight dancing and flickering in the virgin snow. I live in the south now, but I recreate that feeling by closing my eyes and envisioning the beauty. Truly magical.
hello, i love your simple ways that you show and teach about the past. things so simple can give us a bit of joy. boiling water and steaming pine needles or orange peels. or making the tea you made. bringing in pine branches or hawthorne berries. brightens up our house. thats all that yule is. its no scary wicked religious ceremony. its just a little bit of love that we get to brighten our day. ive had no heat and you saying they were very cold and in need of spring just to stay alive and keep from freezing to death. its so heart breaking to think the fire place and maybe the walls was unable to keep the heat in. some people maybe were fortunate to keep the house at 45 degrees. i bet theyd be heart broken to see our miserable lives the way we are now. we might have heat but do we have love for our neighbor so many things have changed in this world. i long for what some call the summer land.

I didn't get to try making the Thomasradln in time for Yule, but I made them this weekend! I did mine in a triskelion/triple spiral shape just to mix it up :) They're super delicious, especially with my morning coffee. So interesting to learn about German Yule traditions! (One of my grandma's was German, but strictly Lutheran). Leaving out a little food for the spirits, reminds me of the spirit plate traditions we had growing up in Indigenous American culture.

My grandmother celebrated Christmas on the 6th of January. She was born in the states. Our Greek and Russian orthodox churches here still celebrate it. After December 25th, they buy up everything in Walmart.

I am reaching out; this is a long shot. A bit about me: I am an atheist. I grew up Christian, in a very devout christian household. I turned to Wicca and the alike around 18 years of age. The more I learned, the more I really felt the pull of it. I 'really' fell in love with it. I would not say that I was necessarily "Wiccan", but I felt a very strong connection. Years past, and my analytical mind took over and now I am an atheist. I cannot seem to accept gods and goddesses (although, I wont deny them) . This is not what I can say for other relgions. I can't seem to accept entities like ghosts. I always am looking. I have unexplainable videos ... Yet, when I watch videos. such as yours, I feel peace, I feel a belonging, I feel that it's right and that it is truth. I feel a connection again. I feel like I never should have (and never really did leave). If I had to choose today a religion, I would choose this. In my early years, I put together a BOS. It is roughly 1200 pages typed. I still have it. I never got rid of it. I even feel reverence towards it. I feel drawn to it all the time. Even now, I am adding entries to it. I open it up randomly and read and begin to fall in love all over again. How can I feel this way if I don't believe? Why does it always feel like "home"? Why am I always smiling when watching these video's? Why at random times drawn back to my bos? I don't know if there is an answer. I feel drawn to your videos because your smile and your energy. I love that you know the history of what you practice. This is how I feel about this. I do not even know what to do, I am soo confused. I am not even sure at this point how to seek answers.

I haven’t celebrated Hanukah in a long time though since I don’t actively practice Judaism. It is not at all like Christmas, or yule, but it is definitely a wintery holiday.

I love the Indian Festival of Lights also- it's called Dewali. From what I gather, they set lanterns in the river to light the way for the souls who have passed that year to find their way to the other side. It's already happened this year, closer to Thanksgiving.

Yule is coming again, so I had to revisit your videos. Winter is one of my favourite times of the year. I love how everything is dark and cold outside but inside there's so much light and coziness. Preparing for the Sun's return and waiting for nature to be reborn again is such a beautiful journey. I love how this time of the year teaches us patience.

Happy Yuletide! I've been a Norse heathen for many years and I love this season. You have a wonderful energy and exuberance, and I enjoyed hearing about ways that close neighboring traditions celebrate the holiday. I have to let you know, though, that the picture you showed at 8:05 is actually Odin/Wotan, and not Thor/Donar as stated. Odin is known for having sacrificed one of his eyes for wisdom and is associated with his two ravens, Huginn and Muninn. Odin would sometimes walk among mortals, disguised as one, and gauge how he was treated. Since hospitality was considered a noble virtue, those who showed such generosity were rewarded.
As far as I'm concerned the Perfect Yule would be spending a day at this woodland witch's hut with all her traditional items and magical cloak! Such a folk tale vibe you've got, love it!

This was a fun video and a great memory refresher. I'm not sure if I've told this story on your vlog page, but I have a December 6 or St Nicholas Day memory. It was my first year in Berchtesgaden and I had turned 8 on the 2nd. In school our German teacher (also school librarian) had been telling us tales of Yule, and she had told the story of St Nicholas in his Bishop's robes would parade through the streets with his "associates" , Black Peter, Krampus and the Butenmandl. Being a kid who lived in story books I believed every word and I was terrified I hadn't been good enough. That night my parents took us in town to watch them parade through the streets, if you haven't seen a picture of the Butenmandl they are covered in hay and snarling animal masks and carrying whips. The noise they made was terrible and as an American child in 1960 it was the stuff of nightmares. We went home after the parade, but the terror did not end; St Nicholas and several Butenmandl stopped at each of the houses where we lived. Now I had put my shined shoes on the porch, hoping I had been good enough to get them filled with candy. But I was afraid I hadn't been good and he would have the Butenmandl beat me, put me in a sack and hang me from a tree. I hid under my bed and refused to come out while I could hear them in our complex. I'm glad this isn't done anymore, but it did get me thinking about being good. Oh and I did get candy in my shoes.
Oh nooo 😅 I am feeling sorry for 8-year-old you! ❤️ I also remember being a bit scared of the Nikolaus and his helpers when I was a kid. In my area we didn't have the Butenmandl but the Wilde Drud, Krampus / Knecht Ruprecht and some other furry creatures. They were always nice when they came to the house but they definitely look scary! 😄 My son has never seen them (Nikolaus visits are not allowed due to Corona at the moment) but I am soooo excited to see how he will react 😁 have a magical Yule ❤️

Tree farms give the farmer an income from land and maybe prevents the land from becoming a housing development or a strip mall with a giant parking lot. I have no problem with farmed holiday trees. I don’t consider them unsustainable. At least if they aren’t sprayed with all kinds of chemicals but that can be any kind of farming. I don’t think they are replacing natural forest in most places but are transitional farm land.

I noticed that these days Christmas has little to do with the birth of Christ: it's very money centric and who has more items to clutter their homes with around this time of the year. There's nothing wrong with celebrating Xmas even as a pagan. And if you celebrate Yule, you're even closer to many of the traditions that have lasted through the centuries.
Try not to think too much of how Christians tortured pagans: pagans also did it to the Christians, so the 2 religions are almost even.

No, you don't get to dictate others' beliefs and their opinions on Christianity. Christianity is inherently oppressive within its belief system and has done extensive damage to many many people, and this is not my own opinion, this is factual in its history and theology.
It's not "almost even." There is no such thing when it comes to Christianity, and pagans are not trying to "get even," and it's vile to even suggest that is the way to come about it.
Of course, Christmas has become capitalistic, that's how the US works (if you mean within the US), all holidays are opportunities for profit. Christmas is the bastardized version of Yule, appropriated by Christians and claimed as their own, with the claim Jesus was born in December, which isn't true. They made that fit into December to overshadow the pagan traditions of Yule, and steal our traditions under the guise of being ways to celebrate the Christian God.
It's widely agreed upon by scholars and theologians that Jesus was born in the springtime, not winter. So Christians could be celebrating his birth & resurrection at the same time in the springtime, but instead they are stealing our traditions from Yule (and in the springtime, Ostara too) to celebrate their own beliefs. Nothing is wrong with celebrating Christian holidays as a Christian. However, appropriating other traditions is wrong.

I always loved Yule - I grew up in a Unitarian Universalist church and the Winter Solstice service and Christmas Eve candlelight service are my favorites! I was born in Christmas so I dunno if I’m biased… now I’m almost 30 and embracing my ancestral traditions as a form of spiritual practice. It feels good to honor my heritage and have something special to pass on. Love the witchy vibes!
The sad part is that Christianity stole traditions from the lands they conquered and forced them into joining that religion in a "join us or die" kind of way. And most people don't know about the real origins of what people celebrates.

So true! 💕 Depending on region and country though it wasn't actually forced ☺️ from historic documents we know that a lot of people favoured the new religion (speaking solely about Europe here - of course a lot of other countries in other parts of the world were forced into Christianity 🙁).

I've traveled to many countries in Asia, Europe and South America, and one common theme is how different the Christian traditions and practices are from community to community. While it is true that many places (including the community that I'm from) were coerced into converting, with respect to the traditions, I think it was a genuine effort on their part to integrate christianity into the communities traditions instead of isolating people from their history. I'm no expert though, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.
They know but whine about it being pagan and Satanic. I say if you don’t like it, give the customs back. You won’t be left with much though. The pope ordered the missionaries to incorporate the old beliefs and customs to encourage conversion. They want to have their cake and eat it too.
@Trinity M I'm from a small Asian community, so I can only speak for myself and my experiences. That being said, there are various sects in christianity as well as other religions. Some are more tolerant while others arent. Religion is complex; people are complex.
Secondly, it's absurd to assume that traditions were carried on linearly. Historically speaking, there were an endless number of disasters, invasions, migrations, and innovations. Traditions changed, Gods changed, religion changed, people changed. What we know about history is only from the records kept. Life is more complex than that. Perspective is relative, and it's impossible to know anything for sure.
I've always enjoyed the pagan tradition! And with viking/norse ancestry I have been study of lot my ancestor's history and mythology. Would be fun to share some of the stories around the bonfire this year.

Yule was my mother's favorite. I loved waking up and seeing untouched snow, the sunlight dancing and flickering in the virgin snow. I live in the south now, but I recreate that feeling by closing my eyes and envisioning the beauty. Truly magical.

hello, i love your simple ways that you show and teach about the past. things so simple can give us a bit of joy. boiling water and steaming pine needles or orange peels. or making the tea you made. bringing in pine branches or hawthorne berries. brightens up our house. thats all that yule is. its no scary wicked religious ceremony. its just a little bit of love that we get to brighten our day. ive had no heat and you saying they were very cold and in need of spring just to stay alive and keep from freezing to death. its so heart breaking to think the fire place and maybe the walls was unable to keep the heat in. some people maybe were fortunate to keep the house at 45 degrees. i bet theyd be heart broken to see our miserable lives the way we are now. we might have heat but do we have love for our neighbor so many things have changed in this world. i long for what some call the summer land.

So interesting to learn about German Yule traditions! (One of my grandma's was German, but strictly Lutheran). Leaving out a little food for the spirits, reminds me of the spirit plate traditions we had growing up in Indigenous American culture.

My grandmother celebrated Christmas on the 6th of January. She was born in the states. Our Greek and Russian orthodox churches here still celebrate it. After December 25th, they buy up everything in Walmart.

I am reaching out; this is a long shot.
A bit about me: I am an atheist. I grew up Christian, in a very devout christian household. I turned to Wicca and the alike around 18 years of age. The more I learned, the more I really felt the pull of it. I 'really' fell in love with it. I would not say that I was necessarily "Wiccan", but I felt a very strong connection.
Years past, and my analytical mind took over and now I am an atheist. I cannot seem to accept gods and goddesses (although, I wont deny them) . This is not what I can say for other relgions. I can't seem to accept entities like ghosts. I always am looking. I have unexplainable videos ... Yet, when I watch videos. such as yours, I feel peace, I feel a belonging, I feel that it's right and that it is truth. I feel a connection again. I feel like I never should have (and never really did leave). If I had to choose today a religion, I would choose this.
In my early years, I put together a BOS. It is roughly 1200 pages typed. I still have it. I never got rid of it. I even feel reverence towards it. I feel drawn to it all the time. Even now, I am adding entries to it. I open it up randomly and read and begin to fall in love all over again. How can I feel this way if I don't believe? Why does it always feel like "home"? Why am I always smiling when watching these video's? Why at random times drawn back to my bos?
I don't know if there is an answer. I feel drawn to your videos because your smile and your energy. I love that you know the history of what you practice. This is how I feel about this. I do not even know what to do, I am soo confused. I am not even sure at this point how to seek answers.
