Check out this master deck with a beautiful view of the Texas state capital as I talk about tips for your ipe decking Follow me on Instagram - / risingerbuild www.MattRisinger.com
If you are spending that kind of money I would keep it the beautiful brown. If you want gray then use another outdoor wood like Redwood or a plastic Trex that is cheaper. I know it takes a small amount of maintenance but the beautiful brown wood is so wonderful. It is like no other wood. I have yet to see images of an IPE deck or seen on CZcams videos with people keeping an IPE deck the gray color. Everyone wants the beautiful brown. So what you have to spend a few hours every year using the special penetrating oil by Penifin Oil or WiseCoat. It is very easy a homeowner could do it. You clean the wood before putting the deck oil on with an IPE cleaner and hot water. Scrub with a brush and wash with a garden hose. Use a 4” brush when putting the oil on. Do 3 boards at a time, wait a few min then wipe with a rag. It takes the same amount of time as mowing a lawn a few times. Never lacquer, varnish or use a polyurethane finish on a Brazilian IPE wood deck. It will not adhere to the IPE wood and would be more trouble down the road.
1) Why is it that every contractor who recommends letting an IPE Deck go grey thinks there is no maintenance for that. Letting the deck go gray will look like crap if you don't clean it every year at least. That is half the work if you were going to re oil the deck anyway. 2) Face screw the IPE deck? I don't get the logic there. So you have to look at 200 screw holes for 25 years just as a precaution because you might have to remove the board? The hidden fastener screws are drilled only into the softer pressure treated lumber support, they come out with no problem.
Well, I have the hidden fasteners, after 5years, the boards rattle a bit. Probably wood shrunk causing the movement .Now I'm thinking of face screwing🤷🏼♂️
Pricey indeed, I'll have to compare it to similar natural wood (thinking Redwood or Cedar) choices that do not require maintenance and hold up to the climate without the price and look of composite.
If it's not stainless , eventually years later rust will appear. My IPE deck is nineteen years old and what few screw's that were not stainless have failed. #10 or #8 Stainless will last for decades. Money well spent.
Great video Matt. Great recommendations.
You continue to be my - go to guy - for project fine tuning! Ipe deck here we go!

Building new ,finding your info valuable! Thanks
Great video! Keep it up!
Great video--appreciate the tips! Out of curiosity, what spacing do you use between the ipe deck boards?
Great Tips! Could I get more information on the screws you used? Are they #8 torx screws? Thanks!
THANK YOU for the Membrane note! but 'blue'? logic sometimes does not arrive till later.

Great video. You guys ever build a steel frame yet instead of pt on decks? What was your experience and feeling if so?
POLOLOUS3 haven't yet but want to. Trex makes a very nice one

percival23 the camo system works great. And you can take any individual board out
Agreed. On such a nice wood it's a shame to have to see the screw heads on the off chance you have to remove a plank
Face screw? Idiot. Let it fade? More of an idiot. Preserve that beautiful color.
ipe looks like furniture grade wood when finished with oil, and who wants to look at all those screws on that that beautiful wood. just my opinion!

Are you referring to Torx screws? Or are they different?
Seanpaulnz01 yes
What does a 1x6 like that in IPE run per lineal foot? (Maybe it was 2x...) Great deck, great view.
Nicpedia pricey. Roughly $5/lf

I was told the deck should be 6" or so below the door level to minimize rain from bouncing off the deck and onto the door structure. True?
+socomon69 use an Endura FrameSaver jamb. Use a sill pan and run that deck just below the door sill.
Just remember this guy is a salesman not a carpenter.

Last 2 tips we're not directly deck related. Clickbait
