It's fascinating to hear the origin story of another person's awakening to the brilliance of Alvvays. I can relate so, so much to what you say here.
I've been a fanatical fan of many great artists over 5 adult decades, but THIS band has given me more joy, more pleasure, than any other. I cannot even begin to explain it, because I get bogged down in superlatives and it feels like it would take too long and I'm forever missing the main point. You are absolutely correct when you say their work hasn't received the detailed, analytical appreciation it deserves.
I come back to the same simplistic explanation again and again: Alvvays are magical.

I'm a big fan of Alvvays and have been since the first album. What hooked me, besides, Archie, Marry Me, was the subversive lyrics especially on one of their best songs you skipped over, Ones Who Love You, which I think is one of the best songs of the 2010s. I find that the production of their albums varies greatly and they seem to want to find a Phil Spector wall of sound type sound which they've never quite obtained. Each of their albums are really really good. I found Blue Rev to be the most consistent and my current favorite (also maybe 2022's best) but the eponymous first album and second one, Antisocialites, each had a more substantial song on them so they haven't quite made an all-time classic album yet they are very close and I'd say each album is excellent. You can also tell by the plethora of live videos, they are a tight band and also very unassuming on stage. I kinda get the feeling they are U2 right before the War (arena rock) album or The Cure before Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and that something will click which will put them into that category because they have the talent and ability to be big if they want that.

i think the debut is brilliant but i felt the flow of the video would've been a bit ruined if i had gone track by track. sorry i didn't cover ones who love you (love the song though)

Hey hey, huge Alvvays fan here! As a song writer I think it just comes down to placing the perfect chords down with the right tone and harmony in the vocals. It starts with what I call the "jingle aesthetic". Think about songs like "God only Knows" on the Beach Boys masterpiece Pet sounds, or many, many pop songs the Beatles wrote such as "Help from my Friends". Most of their songs, are basic chords. Molly also has a voice that sounds perpetually naïve yet has just enough confidence to get the job done. Like one of my all time favourite groups The Cars they snipe all these wonderful hooks, and keep it all as simple as possible. Alvvays drowns it all in reverb, and effects pedals so they have to qualities of a genuine shoegaze act, but if far too tidy. I hope the next album is as good as Rev. I primarily listen to that one via their KEXP live performance where they really show they can do it all without studio help.

awesome! i’m not much of a songwriter so i didn’t really try and go too deep but it’s very interesting to see their music being analyzed from a songwriters perspective!

The cool thing is you don't have to geek out on music theory to notice how all the pop songs do the same thing. Musicians build tension by creating a melody in the verse then hammer on the root aka the key chord during the chorus. Then there's dynamics (quiet then LOUD!!!) as in Smells like Teen Spirit. Check out early Belle and Sebastian if you haven't yet. Cheers. @@lachlanwong6448
