  • The Rochester Amateur radio Association (RARA) purchased a new Yaesu FT-710 radio for members to use. I took it out for its first Parks on the Air (POTA) activation at the Irondequoit Bay Marine State Park (K-2082) on April 8, 2023. Here are my thoughts on it for portable operations, like POTA, versus my own ICOM IC-7300.

    I've been using my 710 for POTA activations for the past year. I love it and it's perfect IMO. I do primarily CW for 3-4 hours and with a 30aH LiFePO battery, I have no issues. This is a fantastic rig for many reasons.

      There’s definitely a lot of good things about the 710. And now that they’ve dropped the price, it can be more competitive with the 7300.

    Thanks for the review. I own the 710 (about 6-months now) and have used my clubs 7300. I've used both of them in my shack and in the field (mostly POTA). Maybe its because my first rig was an 891 (really deep menus), but all of the things that were "bad" in the review are non-issues for me and seem very much operator preference. I've never really had an issue with the VFO, maybe its my operating style, but I've never had an issue getting dialed in on a station. I typically have my VFO steps set around 1KHz and since I mostly hun POTA where ops are on even frequencies getting dialed in has never been a problem. If I need some fine tuning I tap the fine button and make the adjustment. I pretty much always have the meter on SWR unless I'm doing something specific like adjusting my tx audio. If I need to set ALCC for FT8/JS8Call, I change the meter, make my adjustments and I never look at it again. The Back button is easy to find on the menu screen and I'm generally not fiddling with the menus while I'm operating anyway (Thanks N4HNH). I've never used the recording feature on any of my radios, so I don't miss it. For those who do, I could see how it would be annoying though. The only feature that the 7300 and 705 have that's really nice is the SWR sweep so you can find out where your antenna is resonant on the band. Since the 710 is an SDR radio its a possibility that Yaesu could eventually add new features like the SWR sweep and audio tx loop. Will they? That's another story entirely.

      The meter function on the icom is dead on what you want for ft8. Its all right there to monitor. ALC/SWR does change over time as does the temperature of the finals. Especially if you are pushing. I run both radios and if you had it you would miss it. Even on my 101mp they don't have the ability to monitor as much as the 7300 at the same time. Also agree with the audio recording options on the yaesu. The exit/back and tuning around I never had any issues either with that.

    I bought the FT-710 today, weighing all the pros and cons, the 710 is a more modern transceiver with alot of features I believe I'd enjoy. Having not owned a 7300, I don't think I would have any bias or lacking anything I'm missing so to speak. I really like Yaesu products and that's pretty much my entire suite of radios I own thus far. The folks that I see leaving reviews on the radio that actually own one, that don't own a 7300 like their FT-710 alot. I believe at this point its going to be operator preference. Having worked a FT-891 for a few months, I can work it without a problem and I believe I'm going to like the 710 alot.

    Thank you for the videos Mike and the one you did a while ago about the FT 710 helped me pull the trigger on one. I just got my 710 a couple of weeks ago and am amazed at the number of audit reports I get...maybe I got one that is extra special, but I don't recall getting this many with my DX10. I also did an activation during WFD and found I had to go down to the Extra Class SSB frequencies on 20M and also greatly narrow my filter to be able to make out my contacts, but that was quite successful with 29 contacts in 30 minutes. Good review. I bought the FT710 about 10 days ago, and so far I love it. I'm going to be using mine in the shack, not out in the parks. I agree with you about the antenna tuner, it takes quite awhile, and it goes thru the entire process even if I go back to the same frequency and band again. It's really annoying. That's my only real complaint. My antennas aren't as resonant as they should be, so I chalked it up to that issue as a possibility. I'm going to put it on an external auto tuner later today or tomorrow, and see how that works. External tuners are always more broad ranged than the internal tuners. But otherwise I'm happy with it. I'll definitely be keeping it in the shack. John WA2OUZ

I had friends that have owned their 7300 for years that sat down with me to try and get the most out of it and it just plain couldn't compare to the 991a. I now have the 710 as well and I think it has better receive than the 991a.

  • @johnk8091
    @johnk8091 Před 11 měsíci +4

    You are 100% correct on your analysis - I also have the 7300 and FT-DX10. The one aspect that the FTDX-10 far outshines the 7300 is the selectivity, no receiver overload, while the 7300 overloads very easily and you have to back off on the RF Gain. Almost everything else, the 7300 is better - particularly the user interface. All the points you raised are spot on - love the multiple meter display on the 7300, such a pain to individually select a meter on the FTDX-10. And the looping of the recording playback on the 7300 - fantastic. Having to keep pushing the play button on the Yaesu becomes boring very quickly. Well done, first accurate comparison of the two rigs that I have seen. Both are great rigs - I'm not selling either. But, for field days, multiple station setups, RF noisy neighborhood etc the rig to use is the FTDX-10. For pretty much anything else, the 7300 is the better rig to use. Oh, you mentioned tuning steps - yes ! the 7300 has an intuitive auto speed VFO, the faster you spin the dial, the quicker it moves across the band. When you get close to a station, turn the VFO slower and the tuning steps auto adjust to a slower speed. You are also correct about the ATU, it doesn't seem to remember band settings, and takes much longer than the 7300

    • @Sylwester_Krolak
      @Sylwester_Krolak Před 11 měsíci +1

      I can almost agree with you, but let's try to summarize:
      FTDX10 has a much better receiver, much better filters, selectivity, resistance to strong side signals and many other advantages that significantly outperform the IC-7300 in the most important areas for the operator. IC7300 may have simpler and more intuitive operation, but this is only a subjective opinion resulting from habits, which does not matter if you cannot hear the signal that the FTDX receives without any problems.

    • @johnk8091
      @johnk8091 Před 11 měsíci +2

      @@Sylwester_Krolak Sorry sir, but I cannot agree with you - this is based on ACTUAL experience as I own both rigs. I cannot hear any better on my FTDX-10 than I can on my IC-7300 - I often switch between both rigs on the same antenna. The ONLY time I will be able to hear better on my FTDX-10 is when there are hams in my neighbourhood running amplifiers, swamping out (de-sensing) the receiver on my 7300. In my quiet suburb in Africa (Nairobi) they are equal. The sensitivity specs are equal - in fact, they can both receive way below the noise floor, so neither of them are limited by sensitivity, they are limited by noise floor. Look at the Sherwood numbers for sensitivity (not selectivity).

    I did enjoy my 7300 until I got solar panels installed at home. The 7300 was able to pick up soo much noise from the power optimisers under my panels that the 7300 became unusable until it was dark. I then bought an FTDX10. It is soooo much better for urban noise that I can use my HF radio during the day when the panels are working. No noise. The ic7300 was a revolutionary radio that made other manufacturers take note but alas the 7300 is no longer the favourite. Second hand values have dropped through the floor, at least here in the UK anyway. IC7300 I find is a bit sharp to listen to whereas the DX10 and the 710 are so much easier on my ears.

      @MikeN2MAK  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thanks for watching! In this video, I used the antenna tuner to test it out and see how it worked, since it was my first time using the radio. The 1/4-wave vertical was resonant, with SWR of around 1.5:1 or less, so the tuner was really just touching it up a little. But as you can see and hear from the test, the internal tuner seems to take longer than expected to find a match. Others who have the radio have commented about this too. That said, the tuner still worked fine and the radio is definitely a good one. I'm hoping to take it out again (it's not mine, it's our club's) soon.

I've had it for a over a year and it's held up well, even after falling off in the wind one time (I was using a weaker mag mount then, lesson learned). Switching bands is actually very easy. You just drop it down or raise it 1-2 sections. I've got it pretty much memorized now. You can usually get a 1.5:1 SWR. The internal tuner on most radios can easily match that. A tuner is not required though. I've had great success with this on my ICOM 705, which is QRP and does not have an internal tuner. Use the "multi" display to see your audio output strength and quality. Full amplitude with nice curves and no squared off top/bottom is best. Amazing that the 7300 going on 8 years and no one seems able to capture the ease of use and functionality. Going portable ? remeber the FT-857 as well as the FT897?
    This small compact radio ( no bigger that an older CB radio) will draw only 0.65 Amp from your battary on RX standby , compare this to a 2.2Amp - 3Amp on RX when using a modern set, and this is not all, those old sets will offer the use of full H.F+ 6m + 2m and 70cm and on all modes, and that is not all. one could listen on the air band and even listen in to the FM brodcast band ( unlike its predesecor the FT-891 that was viewd as step back offering H.F and 6m ONLY).
    Yet, when it comes to a Base-Station the IC-7300 as well as the FT-710 will offer a better reciver , better sound & display options (and much more).
    I tend to choose the right radio for the job, and the FT-857 is for many one of the best emergency portable radio that one could own , despite the fact that those ardios are old and close to 20yrs old and not in production, the FT-897 production eneded back in 2014 and the FT-857 just a few years ago that is despite the high demand for those kind of small size shack in a box radio.
