- www.ted.com Tom Shannon shows off his gravity-defying, otherworldly sculpture -- made of simple, earthly materials -- that floats and spins like planets on magnets and suspension wire. It's science-inspired art at its most heavenly.

This guy is a true artist and a visionary. His gift is to interpret things in new and challenging ways. I love the reality that he has created and the juxtaposition of space and gravity. The world could certainly use more tinkerers and thinkers of this sort.
I'm not sure why trolls feel entitled to criticize the presentation, the affect or the sound quality. This film is not about quality of acting or an invitation to comment on personal affect. That kind of negativity must hurt and it serves no purpose.
Kudos, instead, to Mr. Shannon, for having the courage to speak to what he has accomplished. The world is a richer place for what he has done.
Tom Shannon is brilliant. Presenting art and science in it's purest form. It's sad to think he should be nervous by the presence of any crowd. This is just genius.
I have to agree that he seems nervous. I would be so excited to present my work, but I too would be nervous. This work is an art form of the extreme conscience! I agree...BRILLIANT!
This is too much amazing work to concentrate into 15 minutes. Very impressive!
I love the fact that you can walk into (inside) his works, as well as his recurring theme between earth moon and Sun.
Some very good uses of magnetism as well.
I enjoyed this TED
I love when art and science and mathematics come together like this. Many people take for granted to beauty of the world around us and things we see everyday, and Shannon does a fantastic job portraying them in hos artwork.
Impressed by his brilliance, but also by his determination to get through that anxiety in order to present his amazing ideas.👏👏👏👏👏
Bringing science and art together.... Thank you Tom
Every talk given by an artist has a comments section filled with people complain about how boring the artist's voice is. I wonder if most visual artists are boring to listen to, or if people watching TED videos are just so picky that they would rather have an entertaining vocal cadence than interesting content.
+Crystal Roseman Shut up. I'm tired of listening to people like you whine about how "rude" other people are. If you don't like it, just ignore it. No one cares that you're more considerate than most people. Gloating about how you can tolerate a boring voice just makes you the annoying one.
+jjaapp18 are you ok? I didn't mean to hurt you by making an observation. Seriously, take an aspirin or something because I'd hate for you to have a heart attack.
+jjaapp18 I must say, this is one of the funniest trolls I've ever received.
wildflower12
I must say, you are the stupidest person I've ever met if you think I'm a troll and you actually acknowledged my existence.
+jjaapp18 you're just so damn cute!
Mr. Shannon has many intriguing novel ideas--how original for a change!
Really interesting Art and Science, not the same old boring stuff. It takes courage and commitment to follow your own path and then put it out there in public. Bravo!
Beautiful stuff.
I love his artistic view of astronomy, it's just perfect
air genie! blows my mind... those installations.. oh man. such a beauty. =) officially inspired!
that floating "stage" sounds awesome!
Wonderful work
Just love the way this guy is extremely nervous! Yet has brilliant concepts and ideas. Wish I had his brain. Unfortunately I'm just lil' ol' me.
Amazing . He does sound ?(scared), he has no need his Art speaks for itself. AWESOME .
This guy isn't nervous. He thinks on a different level and he is really excited trying to explain this. The concepts in this are ridiculously deep. I would doubt that this guy would get nervous about explaining something so cool
he just don't sleep during 3 days only few hours. not significant about his general health or caracter
arty ted talks are my fav ted talks!
creativity is the key to emerging and developing new concepts. The more we allow ourselves to create these ideas and new concepts, the further evolved as a spcie we actually become.
Wow, his stuff is so cool! It's interesting to know how his stuff works because who would have thought of this? It reminds me of a mixture of modern art and science/technology, both of which are fields that interest me. To see them blended together in this way with such sleek designs is awesome!!
Это было очень круто!!! Я бы тоже хотел иметь такую антигравитационную скульптуру и этот летающий шар на трех опорах, на котором ещё и проецируются всякие изображения. Спасибо Вам за такое прекрасное видео. 👍👍👍👏👏👏
that last idea is excellent
Thank you Ted
Great stuff!
TED should hire some sound technicians. I've watch so many videos on this channel that were full of unwanted mouth sounds. This guy struggling to breath is really bad.
The sculptures are pretty cool.
Yeah Xanax should be available in gas stations.
mugenishere the guy has COPD or something give him a break.
Not everyone has working lungs.
Wow. Are all his sculptures some form of magnetism? Totally awesome.
Usually i'm not impressed by the Art segments on TED, but i really enjoyed this; Great stuff.
The arrays of spheres made me think of 3d apps.
Amazing, I just love it.
:O
i cant wait for the floating lake thing
when is it going to be done?
And it wasn't long until his beautiful idea was turned into a mechanism for war
Would a concave magnet float easier so that it wouldn't flip?
Boom! Waala Nomad, Waala! 😄☺️☺️🙏🏽. Concave is actually the answer to many things....including your eyesight 😉🙏🏽
when he gets to the floating island he basically says "this is really cool! but we have no idea how to do it so enjoy this animated video of it instead!!"
I have invented a space-and-time-travelling craft that is bigger on the inside than the outside because it exists mostly in the time vortex and is therefore physically outside of the physical universe we currently inhabit. The part of it that projects into our universe can be formed into any shape, so the entry portal may be disguised as a mundane object or piece of scenery appropriate to the time period or environment it arrives in.
It can't actually be built yet, but the concept is amply demonstrated by the Doctor Who series. I think that adequately validates it... o.o
no it's 100% possible RIGHT NOW and has been possible for many years, it's hidden from public though because it would ruin many industries
dude that floating party sphere is one of the best ideas I've heard of in a long time.
Take a shot everytime he says "uhm".
This is great!
beatiful and great ideas, what an imagination !
Amzing man!
Very ingenious gyroscopic apparatus, like all those built by this guy_
Amazing Man !!! very creative
Yes, art projects truly do consume a significant portion of the world's resources.
quite inspiring, up to the point where he started talking about colleges .. and here in europe studying is much more affordable. to me this exclusivity really let a bitter after taste!
Ya'll can hate on this guy all you like but he's a man of action. He's actually doing, thinking, designing these things. Who cares how he sounds. He has amazing work and you didn't think of doing. Stop drinking hater-aid and give this man some props!!
fantastic,really beautifull.
A CONTEMPORARY GENUIS
Beautiful, intelligent. Really amazing.
I LOVE IT!!! i'm an electrical enginerring major and i would love to do that sort of stuff... is there any university working on such technologies?
that is futuristic, i like that trend of flying spheres
Great ideas.
I love this guys work! Yes, he has stage fright. As a professional artist myself, I know what he's going through. I couldn't even do as well as he is. Great art and great public speaking ability is almost mutually exclusive. Give me great art any day.
That's what makes it art. It is thought provoking.
Brilliant.
That magnet-surfing thing.
wow amazing
wow anyone know if there is any pieces in the western US?
i can't wait for a sky filled 24/7 with giant advertising balls and their giant sound systems. that's utopia alright.
wow :) the magnetic sculpture was awesome
I have an even better idea to the floating lake? I want to create an inverted replica of Mount Everest made of graphene coated jellybabies floating upside down, peak to peak. The outer layer will be made of photo-voltaic jellybabies that collect sunlight during the day to power high efficiency LEDs at night that illuminate the colourfull jelly babies from the inside.
GENIUS!
How is the 20-ton sphere staying afloat?
The ideas were pretty good and they were all connected to me. He is talking about different outgrowths of the same concept, looking at it from different angles.
That nanotechnologically created floating island has my brain going a hundred miles a minute. Fascinating!
I was proud of myself when I painted my new apartment; I thought that was some 'hard work' and I 'did something.'
Now, after watching this guy, I feel like crap.
5 stars.
ass kicking artist!! fantastic work.
bravo!!!
GENIUS
generally artists are not that good at public speaking, there good at art. This is amazing! Thanks for sharing your gift with us.
*their
Are you also an artist? :D
undamned *they're. If you're going to correct somebody, be sure your correction is correct!
Ha! Ya got me! Maybe I'm the artist?
there there...
Rise and shine, mister freeman, rise and shine.
Came for a gravity defying object which was also shown in the thumb nail, yet have not seen it but had to wait through all this?
It was at about 4:00
this guy is amazing!!
@ guitarguy93 thats my all time favorite album, EVER! I dont think i have heard anything come close to the genius of 'Animals'
thats art
There is no destruction. Art is great :)
He would have fainted had the video lasted longer.
so what is the correct answer?
This guy is top of the line genius!!!
WOW! I would love to build something similar, will you allow me to? I would love to have this at my marble arena.
Brilliant. Absolutly Brilliant.
Relax, he spoke just fine. Great passion in his work. Fascinating. Nerd.
Another good use of the sphere from the end is to perform a live "The day the earth stood still" :P
He might be brilliant and visionary and so on. But he really needs to practice giving speeches!
Agreed. I'm sure I would fair no better, though. I can't blame him.
Xavier Jones I would rather have that level of creativity and brilliance than good public speaking skills any day of the week.
Ingenuity is the most important part of this video not the speech!
***** : It's a load of balls, though. Literally. Ingenious..? o.O
This is the guy that always won in the show and tell in school
guy is freaked out....
@ArgueExplain Dispite that, the sculpture is amazing!
the last concept could possibly explain a large number of ufo sightings and such
this guy is amazing...
I bet the military would be interested in his flying ship that could make itself invisible.
That is MODERN ART
The diamond bottomed lake, could this not be used if the polar ice caps melt, as we are told they will?
I'm adding my name to the longest youtube argument ever. /\
that's really fantastic. Holy hell though military would want their hands on it, with invisibility capabilities etc.
This is how a goddamn genius thinks and creates. I'm wholly inspired by his multi-dimensional thinking. And how fucking sweet would one of those be floating around a concert?
The magnetically levitating object looks like a perfect spaceship
that flying ball that changescolour was kool it would be lethal if used in war
This guy is incredible.
Visionary.
OR you could use that last showcased thing to just fly around big cities and scaring everyone into thinking you're an alien. Just sayin'. Would be a great troll.
an expensive troll but a great one nevertheless.
@ArgueExplain
Yup, I remember trying to stop the waver in my voice.
Sick.
anyone have id on the shoes?
"and uh, so that's pretty much it, ok thank you"
And Me?
Hugged my children and told them that I love them everyday.
Ridden a bicycle for transportation, saving enough money not buying gas to make at least two to three mortgage payments a year.
I built my own passive solar, energy efficient home in paradise and have extremely small utility bills.
In the middle of economic collapse I have zero credit card debt and don't live beyond our means and live comfortably.
And this mans art is incredibly amazing to me.
He is a genius.
Nah?....LOL
This is advanced science and incredible art combined.
This man is a genius.
With all due respect, what have you done of any worth lately?
Some people devote their lives to things with practical value, others to dreams.
