I appreciate that he makes the effort to stop right after something. He stops after a verse, or after the chorus. It’s not like he stops on the middle of a chorus very often. And- he doesn’t pause a solo. I appreciate that.

@@katherinemorelle7115 that's precisely the issue. It's the transitions I'm listening out for. Pausing in the middle of the chorus - the most repetitive and predictable part of a song - would be less distracting.

I try to tell reactors to always stop mid-verse. To hear a verse winding down could be right next to a crucial transition, and the impact of those transitions are lost when songs are stopped at the end of verses. Same with solos, etc. Seems like mid-verse is the safest option.

@@STW-News-Headlines For Stairway to Heaven (for instance), Robert Plant now claims not to know or remember the meaning. He said it seemed just to flow to his pen and he said people can make up their own minds what it means. There are some obvious themes in it, but I don't think there's a straight logic from start to finish. It takes its twists and turns, so there will be some of LZ's songs that require personal interpretation and no -one will be 100% sure theirs is right..

We never did that~ Back in the day, we focused on the vibe, and sometimes (not always!) eventually figured out what the lyrics might mean...
And Lex: a principal theme in blues music going back a century or more -- the negative side of relationships. So, the "Evil Ways" of Santana, and the revelation that "...the soul of a woman is created below." of this Zepp song is merely following a rich tradition. Listen to Billie Holiday to see that it goes both ways, with her bemoaning her "man"!

Then we'd also need to throw in the earlier musicians, rather than 'just' the acts who "emulated" THEM. Then we'd be stuck because there aren't recordings of those that they, in turn, "emulated". Whilst Muddy Waters and BB King were great and would be excellent to react to, I do get a bit fed up with the linear idea of musical progression. It's more like a huge tree, with endless branches and with musicians like Zeppelin doing a lot more than mere "emulation". In fact most decent bands/musicians have many and varied sources of inspiration. For Zeppelin's blues influences, you actually have to go decades earlier than Muddy Waters and BB King. Although blues was an obvious influence, particularly on early Zeppelin, it was rarely a straight copy. They were also influenced by early rock and roll, British skiffle, British folk music, American folk music, British music-hall, jazz, classical, as well as contemporary influences such as the Beatles and the Stones, who themselves had multiple influences. Zeppelin developed many ideas of their own too. Altogether, they produced their own unique sound, that has endured to this day

@@Codex7777 I don't disagree with your argument, and wasn't singling out Zeppelin in particular, but there's a tendency with music reaction channels to alight on the same rock/metal canon over and over again, partly under the influence of their Patreons. Popular cultural memory only seems to stretch back about 50 years.
