- Is your well water giving you grief? Are you unhappy with the safety, taste, smell, discolouration or staining caused by your well water and need to know how and where to start to fix it?. You’ve likely heard of water softeners, iron filters, UV systems and even RO’s but what do all of these things do, where are they installed and what order do they go? Do you really need all of these for your family?
Basically, we clean up the water to remove the dirt, color and impurities so your water won’t stain your fixtures and then we disinfect it so it’s safe for your family.
A Spindown filter is used for very coarse filtration. These use centrifugal force when the tap at the bottom is opened to flush out the debris. You would need to manually open the valve at the bottom periodically, usually once a week or more often if a lot of dirt is present, so they aren’t an automatic system. Filter housings with a coarse sediment filter to do the pre filtering. If the dirt amount isn’t too bad, and usually from a well it isn’t, you could use one of these to prefilter your water before any water filtration equipment like an iron filter or water softener to protect the equipment by keeping the dirt out. If you have low pH and lots of sediment in your water you would add the Automatic Backwashing Sediment filter before the pH neutralizing filter.

Gary I have set up my system now which I go from well to filters to pressure tank then to iron filter/ water softener. I found this works for me

You shouldn’t have to worry about pump burn out because of the cut out switch which is now functioning awesome because I’m using filtered water to the switch. It’s the main advantage of prefilter to the pressure tank and switch. But, your right that is something you learn living on a acreage look after your water system and it will look after you. It’s way better I think to have a pre filter with a whole house filter. I didn’t have it before and my water was brown and there was even pipe scale in the water. I bought a prefilter and iron filter but I still had crappy water. Now it’s pre filter, whole house filter, iron filter. I also use chlorine tablets down a shallow well even though I had the water tested because well water is a wild card. Eventually I am planning on a RO system because of its purity.maybe when I win the lottery

Hello Gary,
I’m installing a Microlite backwashing filter because our water is really dirty, and we are having to change out our filters every 2-3 months. We wanted to avoid spending all that money. Would you recommend adding a filter after the Microlite backwashing filter, or just leave it as it is?

I just bought a home with a well and this really helped me understand how the filtration works. I am wondering though, I have a family of 3 including me, and a 46 ft well that holds 70 gallons of water, will that be enough to use and not run dry?

Great video Gary. I am installing a complete water system in our home in Baja Mexico. The water supply mostly is from local wells that have become salty recently due to the extreme drought. I plan on adding a pressure tank prior to any filtration, etc. The water is supplied by a pressurized pipe so a well pump is not required. Will the pressure tank and pressurized supply water be enough to supply water to the faucets or do you think I need to add a pump?

I am having water in my brine tank in between regeneration cycles. (Eco-Water EEC 1502R40 Model)
I replaced sediment filter, cleaned brine tank (and removed the salt sludge) replaced the Venturi valve and cleaned the float. Still, the water is injected into the brine tank but not removed from it. Any suggestions?
First, check to see if you have a pre fill or post fill water softener. See this video czcams.com/video/GedMruLfXhY/video.html It it is post fill, that is normal, if it is pre fill check to see if it is drawing all of the water out of the brine tank during the brine cycle.
Hey Gary, Great video! quick question, can water softeners become non-functional if allowed to sit? We recently purchased a home and the previous owner left a disconnected softener unit that's dated 2019 but has been disconnected for a couple years. We were considering putting it back in service.

Very good info. I believe a softener resin filter to about 2 microns. What size are sediment filters in the video?
Softener resin typically filters down to about 30 microns. Prefilters like this 7525 are a good choice waterestore.com/products/pentek-filter-20-big-blue-sediment-dgd-7525-20bb-155356-43 and filters just before the UV need to be 5 micron.
Enjoying all this information! New to being on a well. We did have a new well pump installed (our system was mainly original 1979) Recently, we also added an iron eater air filtration system (before this, the water smelled so bad all the time) & there is an existing softener. As of a month ago, I am doing hair at the house & noticing a faint smell again. While watching this, I don’t think we have a spin down. Would that be in-line with the filter & softner??
The spindown goes before everthing else but it will not remove smell, only sediment (dirt).

Would you recommend a chlorinator for the well water system?
Few months ago, I installed a sediment filter, then an auto backwashing sediment filter, then an iron filter, then a water softener, but the water deteriorated recently, with a small bad taste and smell. I know it is hard to know without a water test, but Should I try a chlorinator? Because the water has deteriorated, do you think I need to do some type of maintenance?
Yes, if it has deteriorated, I woudl look at maintenance first. I hate chlorination systems becasue they are complex, need a lot of maintenance and expensive. Plus, where does that chlorine end up? In your septic.

Thank you for the video. How come the a sediment filter isn't installed before the bladder tank? I had to keep replacing the pressure gauge on mine. I have recently figured out that I can just clean it out instead.
We do not install anything before the bladder tank because if that became clogged, you would burn out your pump. You are far better off to flush out your tank periodically, like once per year.

Great question! The problem with having it before is that if it ever became partially clogged the pressure switch would signal the pump to keep pumping and burn out your pump. Not recommended.
Here in the US, any water testing company you recommend to test water? I am on city water and seems like build up of calcium- white paste on a lot of the shower heads along with a red/pink scale in the shower or toilets if not cleaned often. What do you recommend I test for first?

I have arsenic in my water (3 & 5).
Where would the arsenic filter go in the line up? From what I read, it sounds like I would need to chlorinate the water before it goes to the arsenic filter to convert arsenic 3 to 5.
It goes after the iron filter but before the softener.
Hello Gary great video and very helpful. If I add a water filtration system to my well water that is operated on a pump, will the pressure lower and if it does how do I fix to get better pressure.
We have installed thousands of these and have never had a complaint regarding lower pressure. They do lower the pressure but you will not notice any difference.

It goes to the fridge and a dedicated faucet at the kitchen sink which is why they are typically installed either under the sink or nearby in the basement or crawl space.

Can you place a filter between the Well and Pressure Tank? I believe that my tank gave out prematurely due to unfiltered water entering the most sensitive part of the system which is the badder. Thanks for the info in advance.
Yes you can, but I don’t recommend it. If that filter ever gets clogged you’ll burn out your pump

I’m in process of connecting our well to our new constructed house. I am no familiar with any filtrations system. A person from Gulligan company came and tested our water and recommended a sediment filter and 10” water softer which will removes some Iron in our water , he said we have a low iron problem s, but needs to be removed, also recommend reverse osmosis filter. Well, I have no problem with his recommendation, except the cost. Does your system provide the same functionality and we need to install R/o in basement with pump to go to 4 locations, can we do the same with HUM system. I would appreciate if you could answer to my concerns, because I want to install these before moving to the house.

Ok Gary, what do you say about 180ft well iron filter and softener. All elements in the tanks (plural) changed, chlorine level at tap water between. .5 and 1. The water comes out tap clear even in cup test. When i add a teaspon of bleach to the water in the cup, the water turns light brown. You say? No one has been able to address this. Do I more equipment?
I would have the water that comes out of the tap tested for iron.

Before I invest in this system I wanted to know if you are familiar with the system and what your thoughts are using such a system.

Hi Gary! Great Video! I'm on a well, with 5000 gal holding tank and pressure tank. We have a tiny house rental unit near the well/tank that I would like softened as well as our main house up the hill a ways. Softening the water at the well location would mean utilizing the soft water for the house, pool and yard irrigation. (all suffer from scale build up). Is this too much for a softening system to handle?
It all depends on how much water you use and your water hardness. Can you calculate your daily water usage and have your waters hardness tested?

I'm exhausted after watching this. Do the last two filters remove the salt that the softener puts into your water? I don't like cooking or drinking salt pellets.
Yes, the reverse osmosis system removes any sodium that is in your water from before or after the water softener.
What I have found is the more filter you need to get good water, the lower your water pressure is going to be. Is there a way to install a large water holding tank installed after all the filtration systems, that would automatically stay filled, so a pump could work with this supply to supply water to your house, and keep water pressure up. I have tried a pump but it seems to not be able to pull water through the filter fast enough, basically captivates for lack of water. Do you know of any videos explaining how to do this?
As mentioned in this video almost no one would need all of the equipment shown. Yes, the more equipment you have it can affect the water pressure but as long as the equipment is in good shape the affect is minimal. This is a great video! Though my question is if a water softener goes before or after the uv light since the source comes from surface water that hasn't been treated by a municipal water plant? I bought a Rheem water softener and in the instructions they mention that if the water source could contain microbials (bacteria) they don't recommend to install it before a proper disinfection such as chlorine or uv light, so this is my dought. I know that well water is different than surface water in different aspects though.

How do I know if I have any changeable filters?
Hi, Gary, The once very good well water here suddenly has what I think may be white water mold. They say it's recognizable as looking like bits of tissue throughout the water in a clear jug, which is exactly what it looks like. After running the water through a piece of cloth, the white stuff left is very slimy. The water also stinks, and the smell seems more like sewer, and not a sulfur smell, but I could be wrong.
The property does not belong to me, and I am only here temporarily so I just need something inexpensive and basic to take care of my drinking water. Can you please offer advice on a filter or whatever to get my by for a short time? Thanks for your help...Kenny

How long does the carbon filter last I know it regenerates but it has a expiration to it
It depends on numerous factors like how much water you use and if there are any chemcials in the water that the carbon is removing. But for a well water application, typically about 10-15 years.
*My farm has almost all of these filters for our system, but we also collect rain water as a primary source before our well is used.* The only thing hooked up to our well all the time are our outdoor hose spigots. Everything else goes through these filters before use within the house. My neighbor ratted me out for rainwater harvesting, and now I am in a dispute because I will not allow any Gov't officials on my property to inspect. They actually flew over my farm and took pictures from the airplane, and are suing me for access. *The judge has thus far denied their warrant applications, and I am currently in the process of burying all of my rainwater tanks & lines. I have also decided to construct a 'green wall' to screen out my neighbor (which also blocks her 'mountain views'), and along the road frontage.*

If my tank is 40psi pressure tank. And the pipes are 3/4” after the tank. How much would these filters slow down the pressure? So if I was washing the car. The water isn’t going to dribble out is it? Anther good video 👍👍👍

If you don't change the sediment filters eventually it will dribble out but the rest of the system shouldn't make a noticeable difference.
OK, so if I have a well that has a jet pump hooked up to what he calls a pressure tank, but mines does not say pressure tank. It says reserve tank. It’s basically the same thing they both hold water inside of a bladder system and the bladder system pressurizes the tank, so that you have normal water pressure like if you were hooked up to city water

No, the problem with doing it that way is, if ever a filter became clogged your would burn out your pump.

Just had my water tested as we have had some discolloration and staining. Thought it was from Iron but thinking now it is sediement. What solutions would be appropriate to add? If I wasn't planning on drinking the water and just needing the water to be good enough to put into an RV holding tank for use with sink for cleaning and toilet. Would I only need the sedament filter and uv filter? Or would I need more?
Assuming there is no color in the water, yes, that is correct unles it is very hard or has high iron.
Would the colour potentially cause degradation of the tank and hoses? Or would I be fine if it's a bit tinted.

Gary I need some help with a system please. We had this water treatment unit installed about 15 years ago. It has proven very effective but as part of a rebuild of the house the equipment was disconnected and we can't locate the information on the system that we need for set up.
The Iron removal unit was a WATERITE INC Mod. # is obscured but might be P339-10A TC 11.
It has a control head that resembles one you use in your video but the place where that unit has an air intake filter that you remove during the refresh process is fitted with a removable blanking plug and it appears the air for the unit is being introduced by a venturi type fitting in the well supply line. Between that device and the unit there is a Braukmann automatic air vent but it is rotated to the off position so not sure it does anything.
I’m concerned about that venturi device as a way to introduce the air needed as it represents a significant obstruction to the flow from the pump and must increase the head the pump is working against quite a bit.
Could the plug be removed from the control head and an air filter intake unit put in and if so would it likely continue to work as well as it has?
Great question, you have an "old school" air birm system. You are correct that they restrict the flow to create a venturi affect to draw in air to oxidize the iron out of the water. Hi Gary, thank you for the great video. I have one Viqua AWP40B-V whole house filter. I noticed that you have two of them. Do you recommend having two AWP40B-Vs? I have well water and a Viqua UV light as well. The AWP40B-V is cheap enough that it wouldn't bother me to add a another one. Not sure why the water treatment company only included one. Thank you.

Hi Gary. Looking for a temporary fix a copper problem. For now, I am looking for an inline copper removal filter only for the shower line installed in front of the shower head. Just a stop gap to stop the shower curtain and tub staining. I have been searching but can't find a shower filter specifically for copper with an NSF rating for copper. My 120 foot deep well with new submersed pump raw water has 0.03 mg/l copper. My filtered water at kitchen sink after PH, Softener, and Iron filter is 2.78 mg/l. Yes, about twice allowable limit. So, it looks like it is an internal copper pipe degradation problem. Do you have a manufacturer that has such a filter. Thank you.

We draw water from lake. If we use automatic backwash sediment filter, where should backwash be piped to? Back to lake? drywell? Pumphouse is at shore. House 70ft away and 20ft above.
you can just run it out on the ground out from your house. it is just water and sediment coming out. no chemicals or other substances coming out of the drain line.
If you don’t have freezing temperatures you can dump it outside. If you do have freezing flush into a dry well or septic tank.
@@GarytheWaterGuy EJ Robinson is right that it is just water and sediment. However, I asked because a plumber once said environmental rules might require it go to septic tank. Not practical in our case. Couldn't find a rule other than for swimming pool filters which can be discharged to ground.

Really your question is beyond the scope of this channel. But, You'll need to get your water tested to find out what treatment process you need to make the water the desired level of quality for bottling.

The spindown drains into a bucket but the Automatic backwashing filter, iron filetr water softener and tannin filters all need drains. They can connect to any drain like a sump pump, or directly to your aBS drain lines above the the system under the floor above.
What’s the pressure drop after the filters, can’t the bladder be installed after all the filters ?
The amount of pressure drop would depend on a lot of factors but you would never notice it. No, the bladder is always before the filters. Otherwise if something before the bladder tank became clogged you would burn out your pump.

I’m guessing the bigger filters have more surface area and less restriction, probably way more costly…Could a second bladder be installed after the filters, acting as a reservoir, to maintain pressure if need be ?

Assuming that you are on well water. First, the cartridge filter with a coarse sediment cartridge, then the iron filter, then the water softener and then the carbon filter.

We added a whole home UV system as the water is testing bad, It failed with 2 Coliform after the install, So we had a pipe installed off the system so it was all new... and it failed again with 27 coliform... do I need to shock the well? I thought these systems were the way to go and killed it all
I'll bet whoever installed it did not disinfect the household plumbing as part of the installation. The problem is, the disinfected water will come into contact with the infected water that is downstream of the UV and reinfect it. We Watched your video(Thank You) very helpful indeed. We have another issues after performing these steps...While running the water to remove the chlorine the well ran dry. What is the next thing to now.. We did the removing of the filters running the chlorine until smell and taste(spit) was gone and then put brand new filters in and that's when we ran dry when trying to run the water to make sure it was free of coliform and chlorine... Do we need to replace the filters since we ran the well dry or do we carry on as normal. We have had nothing but problems with this well, It was my fathers home now Estate And we are buying the home,,but no one can give a mortgage in Canada without water passing with 0 coliform. HELP

I realize this is showing all possible filters but would you place a cartridge sediment filter before your backwashing filters? Since most home owners are not the best at keeping up with the maintenance of their filters, aren't you worried about them effecting flow rate during a backwash of one of your backwashing filters? Doesn't your Iron filter also remove sediments? Why no Chlorine/Hydrogen Peroxide injection? Don't you want to kill the bacteria before it passes through the filters so the slimly byproducts does not coat the medias inside the filters? That would make the costly replacement of UV bulbs redundant. I know it's residual income, but wouldn't killing the bacteria pre-filter be more effective and help oxidize so the filter can preform better? How well do the piston seals and spacers of those Clack valves hold up to well water?
No, I don't recommend a sediment cartridge filter before the Automatic backwashing filter. That's the backwashing filters job. Yes, iron filters can remove some sediment depending on the media. I don't like chemical injection systems, those chemicals will end up in your septic system. If you have bacterial iron you would need a chemcial injection system but that is about the only time I would recommend them. Yes, with a chemcial injection system you would not need the UV system, but chemical injection systems also require their fair share of maintenance. Not all filters are compatible with the chemicals used for chemical injection. Clack pistons and seals hold up extremely well to well water. We have been using them on well water for over 20 years.

I have a lot of iron, I use at least 2 filters a month and still have to use iron out to wash white clothes and I use it in my toilet and other iron removing chemicals for other things like the bath tub, sinks...etc
