I'd 100% watch that series (though idk if that's saying much since I'd watch basically anything you release) (still, 'twould be an excellent series, so pls do it)
The problem with animals in DnD is that if you make them as dangerous as they are IRL they would be OP for low level adventurers, but too weak for mid to high level ones. Like, sure, a hyena could tear off your arm in one bite, but as soon as you can cast fireball they would die pretty easily lol, so it's hard to find a place for them. As someone else pointed out it would be fun to make a one shot with realistic animals someday
...totally not trying to distract Rob from getting work done by tempting the maffs part of the brain to calculate Mufasa's fall damage and bug ration finding ratios and Charisma scores for Timone and Pumba...
@RobertHartleyGM - I'd like to expand on that. Hyenas are relatively small animals with correspondingly sized biting apparatus, thus a quick bite in a combat attack would do relatively little damage. The interesting thing is if it manages to bite someplace where it can latch on and do those classic canine jerks, tearing off much more flesh, while simultaneously getting its victim off balance, or latching on where it can completely grip on either side of a limb etc, which is when it could do the above and also begin the slower process of exerting maximum crush power, which might overcome the victim's bone strength, thus making that limb completely unusable.
That's assuming a full force bite, when they chase they can only nip. When you are incapacitated, or snuck up upon, then the bite force would be greater
In one of my games, we started the game walking into an abandoned town square with 3 wild dogs. One dog bit me, took me to zero HP and I failed my 3 death throws. Biting kills.
Beasts are overall so underpowered. Wizards of the coast do have a thing for underpowering natural things (martial classes and beasts) overall magical. Many beasts should have cool abilities and proficiencies, but instead get the bare minimum. Look at the dinosaurs! At what world would an Ankylosaurus, a literal tank that nothing could harm it from above, have an AC of 15?!?! Not to mention, they haven't even fixed the DC's of such creatures! For example a triceratops charge DC is only 13, while it's supposed to be 17(8+3 from proficiency+6 from strength). Overall it's such a mess.
I'm pretty sure Hyenas hunt very successfully. Would have to research it. And even of not, that should be reflected in a lower attack bonus, not a lower damage.
To be fair they don't have a very large mouth. 1d6 is the same as a short sword or one handed spear. Either of which could easily delete a person in real life or DnD.
I'd far rather take my chances in an armored sword fight than against a hyena. Swords can't cut through metal and struggle with leather. Hyenas do not.
@RobertHartleyGM fair point but I wonder if a real hyena would bite metal armor. I'm sure they could crush it enough to cause some injures if they did.

Pimp my Statblock with Robert Hartley, GM
Bringing back "This is the way" just for this idea right here.
Stat my Pimpblock with Heart Robley, MC
The Zoologist's DM guide, by Rob
He didn't even give us a thumbs up. Are you still okay, Rob?
Realistic animals in DND would be pretty fun
I mean, you have the free time, right? Not like you're running two campaigns with consequences, backstory moments, and plot, right?
I guess he running much more than just two campaigns
Do it! that is a great idea

I need this book - "Roberts Accurate Guide to DnD Beasts"
I still remember that stream when you were talking about hyenas, you almost went livid xD
Yeah we do love some statblock fixing!
Artificial Kiwi augments actual stats
I would definitely watch that series. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the stat blocks for beasts that just don't make sense.
Keep that logic flowing!
These little rants are informative and entertaining haha keep it up rob
Hyenas weakness is saying Mufasa pretty loud! :v
yes you should and call the series "ReRole"
It would be super fun to have a book full of foxed statblocks and rules according to science!! By Robert Hartley GM!!

A Robert Hartley video in the shorts feed! Also yes please when can we expect this series? ❤
Honestly fixing the beast statblocks sounds great. I think the hyena could have a d12 damage die and crit on a 19 or 20 like champions
oooh you could start with all the Lion King animals and have dnd Lion King!

If you do make it a whole series, maybe you could even release it as a book for fellow DMs to use in their campaigns.
Yesssss
Yes plz 🤩
Please do! Teach us more about both animals and D and D via fixing the D and D zoo.

Im here for it

When we gonna get Roberts version of DnD 5e with all the fixes for everything?
Maybe like 20 years?
I'd watch that video series!!
Playing a druid, so yes do that Rob!! Lol

Also imo Hyenas' bites are more like CRUSHING damage than piercing damage...
O you definitely SHOULD
Please do 😊😊
Hyenas are so cool...
Yes, you Should fix Stat blocks, that would be incredible. Start with cats. ;)
Do that series. If you are providing your usual commentary during it, i'd watch lol.
You need to fix those stats and rename the various kinds of attacks, at the very least.
😊👍
I'd be down
Do iiiiiiittttt
Yes, please! Fix them! We would all be glad!
So, what you are saying is that the dnd hyena is the mosquito of the real world? 🤔 Interesting.
To make sure all stats are realistic you should fight the animal before making any adjustments
That was my job when I worked at the zoo.
Yes, please make that series to fix dnd😊
Yes do it
to be fair though a normal person is lvl 1 so they have on average a d8 of hp so a d6 is not a death sentence but if they crit it is lol
Robert, I need you to go into DnD Beyond and make a Very Rare Lightning sword that has the same abilities as a Rod of Lightning. Please and thank you.
It's a maximum of 6 damage, and average of 3 damage.
A commoner has a maximum of 8 hp and an average of 4 hp.
to be fair, you can take a dagger in the lung and sleep it off.
so a bite from a medium sized animal would not deal that much damage relatively
Do it
3d6 seems fair.
How many hyenas take down living animals, it seems right , maybe a bonus against prone or unconscious creatures would work
I'm pretty sure Hyenas hunt very successfully. Would have to research it.

You should
A Dagger does 1D4 .... which is worse - a dagger or a bite ?
A hyena bite, without contest.
So what we thinking? 2D12?
Just adding one more D6 with 6 attacking you sounds nasty
But a Commoner only has 1d8 hp so that 1d6 dmg could be fatal.
Don't get me started on the garbage HP of commoners
Write your own house rules patching all the issues you have with the game?
I have.
Please fix jumping rules first so that elephants cant jump and cats can
