Here's a required weekly EAS test (RWT) from the Sinclair-owned CW affiliate serving the Research Triangle of North Carolina, including Raleigh, Durham, and Fayetteville. This was recorded on Wednesday, January 19, 2023 at 10:25am EST.
So, first off, been a while since I've done an EAS test! Been way too busy to have time to capture and edit them, but I plan on getting back to them pretty soon as part of my 2023 plans to rediversify the content on this channel beyond just newscasts (as I've said, it was never the intention for it to get that way, but just happened - newscasts will still be a major part of what I post though so don't worry!).
Secondly, I had zero plan to even record this. So, I'm in the process, and this was a spur of the moment thing, to revisit my WLFL promo montage, that, hard to believe, I made almost two years ago now. I wanted to see what's changed and what hasn't since 2021 - how many outdated 4:3 SD promos and bumpers are still in use in 2023? And, well, this is a good spoiler, as quite a few still survive (but they've also updated some, not all, of their bumpers to the Fall 2021 CW graphics package, and they couldn't even get that right).
The slide is pretty old as you can tell, the scroll is oddly at the bottom as opposed to the top (but at least that's in 16:9 lmao), and the encoder is a Digital Alert Systems DASDEC-II. Craig Roberts is the voiceover heard at the start. The strangest thing though, is the weird, ominous sounding music they chose to use. I'm not as up to brush on EAS regulations as some are, but I highly doubt they're even supposed to be adding background music.

Did they really need to add that sinister background music? Those EAS tests are scary enough…

This is quite bizzare to say the least.

That background noise makes this test seem very sinister. Like ambient noise for an upcoming boss battle.

A good look at the funniest tv station in the country. And yeah if you play background music for a EAS alert, that background music will go on channels with the EAS. And the music sounds like it was made in the 80s or 90s.

I have the Xfinity Streaming app so I see mostly a blue framed background but I like how most channels today try to do their best design when it happens to tell viewers that it’s not scary.

The graphic feels way too 2000's like for *2023*

Ok.. that is strange, obviously the alien-sounding music and then the 2007/8-like bumper, hmmm….

Oh boy... if you think WLFL is bad... get a load of WRDC.
Both stations are time capsules of a bygone era.

Who else noticed that low pitched synth music in the test?

Whoever did this promo had ideas on making an EAS test 'cooler'...forgetting that we aren't paying attention to any other noise and instead combining a speaker test with the EAS, and neither did well.
Then why throw a city of license on the screen and forget the call letters?!

I'm pretty sure this screen is part of the "TV To Talk About" era during 2011-2012.

I have a feeling the ticker should be within the green arrow graphic in the incorrectly framed video.

A couple of things: 1. Correction: CW22, and 2. ALL television and radio stations in the United States are required to do weekly and monthly tests of the Emergency Alert System every year.
