If there are two bikes I get asked about the most, it’s the Honda CRF450R and the Yamaha YZ450F. I try to purchase a bike for myself every year, so I thought I’d get a ’22 Yamaha YZ450F and get it ready for the Dubya USA World Vet Motocross Championships at Glen Helen. Since the Yamaha is what I gravitate toward lately when I go race, I figured I’d share some of my knowledge about what makes this good production bike a great race bike for the casual vet racer.

Take the radiators rubber bumpers on the radiator flanges and flip them over. On one side the flange bumper is 10mm thick, and on the other side it is 4mm thick. Put the 4mm side next to the frame to move each radiator 6mm inboard. They will be 12mm closer and its free mod.
Do the shouds fit still or you just have to flex them inward a bit? Sounds like a great idea. Lol.
@@jake981 fit perfectly bolts are a little harder to line up tho
Invaluable information for all bikes across the board! Thank you for your hard work
Good stuff Keefer. Running different ignition and my tuner pushes me to look at different settings especially the engine braking. I've never really put much thought into that but it makes a big difference. Thanks for sharing.
Very good tips like always 👌
Learned a lot thanks.
Well I took a few notes that I’ll definitely use! I was just kinda disappointed you didn’t go over suspension. I saw the kyb fork tubes but I mean..
Incredible nowadays how the ECU can effect chassis.
I'd like to know more about the exhaust and air filter discussion. It sounds as if maybe the exhaust is there for weight reduction but taking away throttle response, the air filter restored the throttle response?
What makes it look thicker is there is no gas cap.. my friend has a Kawasaki and he said he didn’t notice any difference. He is also 6’1 and he didn’t feel cramped.
👍
Does the power flow plastics actually make a difference on the new yzs I know they did on the previous models but doesn’t look like they do on the 18-22
I run them on my racebike now and while they're not near as big of a difference as they were on my 2016-17, they are a little lighter and definitely do let some more air into the engine, and slim up the bike some. I personally really like the stadium front number plate and the front fender, which is kinda cutout to allow air to pass between the fender and number plate.
Keefer do you still prefer Gytr engine kit ??
Can't ever see spending $1000 for an ecu on a bike that has a programmable system from the factory? With similar gear changes, exhaust and induction mods, mines soo versatile with the custom tunes I've created, I can manage pretty well for far less coin.
Why are you running the Monster Claws?!? 🥴
what pro tayper bars you use. Are they higher than stock ?
Dam buy me one Mr once a year 🤠
Yamaha the best
BUY AMERICAN BUY FMF
Akra is way smoother for his type of rideing
Correct. If you need 2 more hp at wide open throttle, buy an FMF. If you need a spark arrestor and better power everywhere else besides WOT, the ProCurcuit T6 is indestructible.
3000 dollars worth of mods on a 10000 dollar bike. Ouch.
That bike is perfectly fine stock. Just tuning is ridiculous to what you can do. I left one of my 2016 yz450’s completely stock and it out pulls my friends other bikes that have mods no problem.
Janky!
2 strokes man only 2 strokes Yamaha 4 are for kids 2 for mans
If you like getting beat up by kids, keep riding your smoker 😂
so when you add ALL those mods and money and time and its like still, no better than a YZ250 2022 smoker. but you just tossed away 5 grand on junk...lol
the Factory Fantic guys in Europe don't have a problem with a bike from 2005 with some new plastic on it...lol
Those euro Yamaha guys are also finishing well behind those factory KTM's doing all the winning.
@@carisi2k11 you can win on any bike if you set it up correclty. and also why are you guys comparing pros to what the bike is capable of? those bikes are factory built for that 1 rider, not for everyone. btw Håkon Østerhagen won in the 125class not that it matters.
