I always have a big conversion van just for this reason. I keep it mechanically sound and maintained. A big bed in the back, one comphy captains seat, I have a laptop to use in hot spots if needed, and always a phone. My chihuahua for company and safe places to go. I thank God I dont need to do this now, but it is there if I need it and I wouldnt hesitate.

This is a wonderful and very needed program. People don't seem to understand that when you have lost everything your pets are extremely important to you. They are the only ones who have stuck by you during the good and bad. Shelters will not take you if you have a pet and many times sleeping in your car feels safer than sleeping in a shelter.

Some monuments are larger than others. I served under lethal, extremely dangerous conditions. Here in the US I submitted 150 applications for employment. Nobody even gave me an interview. I am convinced the system is set up to impoverish people, and railroad them into jails and prisons.

@@martintinsley6458 People criticised me for being unemployed but it was not my choice. People told me to get a job but despite having worked hard for qualifications I only got a couple of interviews though I applied for over 350 jobs. I turned up to those interviews on time, as clean & neat & polite as I could & showed them my exam certificates but I was young & had no experience except for voluntary work, which they were not interested in. I couldn't get any experience except voluntary work so I was locked out of the employment market. I think it is time people stopped criticising the unemployed & campaigned for opportunities for people to do things that are needed. I think if someone has been unemployed for a certain time there should be some sort of scheme to provide opportunities. Maybe churches & community organisations could get together with monied individuals & work out what their community needs & find ways to pay people to do it. Maybe find empty buildings & turn them into affordable accommodation for people not earning much. Derelict buildings attract crimes from drug dealing to arson so something like that would benefit the whole area.

Really they are doing nothing wrong, what else can they do? Tolerance and compassion from the community I'm certain would go a long way. The program that gives these people a place to park for the night w/o negative consequences for trying to sleep must be a big relief for those fortunate enough to have this resource available. But all in all, I love it. people with big mortgages of all kinds and sizes think that we are homeless but the true we are not. In my case, if you see me on the street, I look clean shave and prosperous but the key to be successful living in a van is a full time job and a good fat banking account (over 10K in cash reserves ), one needs at least 10 months in savings, one does not know when one will fall into hard times financially which I am going through now.

These people have tapped into their resourcefulness. Doing what needs to be done to survive. We all have this resourcefulness and it should be tapped WHILE working a job. Ask, how can I produce an additional source of income that I control? What hobby or passion can I turn into a part-time business? What books can I read to help me do this? What books can I read to become financially literate in understanding how to make our money work hard for us after we have worked hard to earn it. This is something most of us working a job, never even think about. Educating ourselves financially and allocating a certain amount of dollars to the task of recruiting fellow dollars. It’s not as hard as we are lead to believe. It’s definitely not as hard as living in a car. Resources may be limited, but our ability to be resourceful is not. Especially with the abundance of legitimate information available for free on the internet and in public libraries, we have the ability to turn our situation around. A job is good and necessary for many, but as these examples show, it cannot be depended on as our sole source of income. Remember JOB stands for Just Over Broke. Tap into your resourcefulness and the resources will come.

Everyone thinks its California, a person can survive living anywhere, but it gets cold at night...really cold, and during the day it is unbearable with heat. America has got to do better than this. Working and living like this. This is pure selfishness. Really, do you have to have a new fancy car? I know some ppl are trying but if Californian's wealthy would just organize, and provide shelter at a price where most of even the seniors could get low income housing. It would be a some help.

bean74: With a part time job and over 2,000 miles, it is probably safer for that woman to do what she is doing. Many seniors on fixed incomes travel via train and bus; using shelters or streets for in between sleeping.

It is possible to stay clean without showers but it makes it much more difficult. If you can get a bowl of warm water & cover your cars windows for privacy it is possible to have quite a good sponge bath in your car but it is not so easy to keep your hair clean. There should be places people can go to shower & wash their clothes. Every church should be helping with this. Maybe have shower clubs people can join & come once or twice a week at arranged times.

@manxcafe The probem is people dont care. Unless they have been through it themselves; they really don't care what other people are going through. They think that everyone that is homeless has brought it upon themseves; and this is not always the case. So by acting like they brought it upon themselves; its easy for people to act like they deserve it and then cut them off from mainstream society. Not realizing'; especially in this economy; it easily could be them that are cut off from society.

I am living in a van and a lot of people living in vehicles leave behind a lot of garbage and messes for someone else to clean. Not every one living in vans are like that but out of 10, 7 of them don't give a hoot about someone else property.

Sometimes I wonder if someone had such a fat income referring to the ceo. If they couldn’t manage their funds. I’m not looking down on anyone. But we’ve lost everything at one time but didn’t eat out. Never went on trips and pulled ourselves out of a rut because we were so careful.with our finances. We own our home and if it wasn’t for this we could very well end up like this.

If you think about it, this land in the US is what shapes us. The Native American populations lived like nomads as well. You won't find a single pyramid in the US like you can in other countries. The people lived very mobile lives back then and we seem to be turning back to that again, especially with the deforestation occurring.
