  • If you’re shopping for a new minivan you’ve picked a good time. First of all, there are only 4 models from which to choose so that makes life simpler but more importantly they’ve all been recently refreshed or completely redesigned with the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica midway through their product cycles and the Kia Carnival and Toyota Sienna the all-new vans on the block. And this week I’m getting to know the 2021 Sienna Limited - now the penultimate trim just below the new Platinum grade. It’s available in front or all-wheel drive and comes with a standard, gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain that takes MPGs from 21 to 36.
    MSRP as-tested: $50,100

Soccer moms and dads have very high expectations, much more than luxury car owners. They want drama free experience, reliable vehicles, competitive pricing, and good MPG. This is the type of market Toyota is the strongest at. They are slow and conservative to change, but carefully plan the steps ahead.

We have a Chrysler Pacifica, which is nearing the end of its lease. The Chrysler might have stow 'n' Go, but buyer beware - this is the new, redesigned version. IN my old Town and Country, the middle row seats could slide back and forth, and there was more travel in the driver's seat. It was comfortable. The middle row seats tumbled into the floor. Now they move forward and lower into the floor. And here's the BIG difference; they don;t slide back and forth. So the driver's seat only comes back so far. I'm 6' 2" and can't get comfortable behind the wheel. The driver's seat needs a few more inches of travel to be comfortable, but it can't do that because it would rob the second row passengers of any leg room. IMO, this is a really bad, ill-thought out design by Chrysler. And if you get the 8-seat version like I did, you take that middle seat out and you lose the center armrests, because that's what the middle row seat provides when it's folded. So we looked at the Sienna, and the driver's seat goes way back and is so much more comfortable than the Pacifica, if you're a taller driver. Just something to think about.

Just bought a 2021 Toyota sienna XSE, what a fantastic vehicle! Drove it home from the dealer it was a 400 mile drive, and varied the speed so I will have a proper break in. Kept it under 70 the whole time and got 41 miles per gallon! Very impressive! And yes it has plenty of power. If you’re a lead foot this is obviously not the van for you. Personally bravo Toyota! Yes I understand the backseats don’t come out, OK they did that for safety reasons. And yes one day they probably will have a relay that you can plug into the seatbelt, for the airbag system, there is going to be a lot of companies using this van for a mobility van, so just give it some time and it was not a dealbreaker for me, the mileage was my main reason for choosing this van. Yes there are some negatives about this van but overall it is fantastic. Yes I did get the inverter package, it’s going to be wonderful for camping! Yes it can’t power my whole house but that’s OK, there’s another option for you it’s called a Ford F150 hybrid.

When I stepped on the gas pedal all the way down to get more power, the noise from the four-cylinder engine was just terrible. That was just with me in the van. I could not imagine how under power this van would be when it is loaded with 6-7 passengers and all their luggage. The fuel economy was great though.
