- You might be looking for a katana for your Iaido training. Let’s see what an 8th Dan Iaido master’s real katana looks like.
Seki sensei has taken part in the All Japan Iaido Tournament 17 times, but he has always used this katana. He passed the 8th Dan exam with this katana too.
His 2.64 shaku katana was sold at an Iaido tournament, and it was the only one that fit into his hands perfectly.
By the way, he has another 2.6 shaku katana which he had a swordsmith make for him, which he uses for Tameshigiri mat cutting training.

I was able to acquire my Sensei's iaito that she used to pass her first blackbelt test years ago. She is currently 4th degree. I feel especially honored to use my Sensei's iaito!
Lovely!
The part where seki sensei cut the mat was absolutely beautiful.
What I love the most about this channel is Seki-Sensei's excitement to share with the world his knowledge on all these arts. You can see the pride from his smile demonstrating each technique, or showing off a beloved katana such as this.
Absolutely 👍🙏
I've been forging primarilly western style swords for over 30 years now. When you see someone pick up a well made, well balanced blade that is perfectly suited to its function they seem to stand straighter, you see power flow into their hands and joy in their eyes.
Your ancestors and our ancestors around the world would be pleased that you have a katana that is ideally meant for you. Everybody who appreciates you would be glad to know you have such a beloved katana as well. I'd like to also say. You are meant for the katana you have.
Wow! Seki Sensei Is Smiling When He Unsheath His Katana.. This Without A Doubt, Is His Favorite Katana.. 😳👍👍👍😁😁
Very beautiful I can tell it has a sense of spirit with it and it's a part of the master sensei soul
That is genuinely one of the nicest katana’s I’ve ever seen. I love the tombo motif, and it’s very subtle and elegant. One day I want to own my own katana for my iaido practice and I hope it looks similar to this one.
The sheer amount of knowledge, and accomplishments, Series Sensei has at only FIFTY YEAR OLD is all the testament you need to his dedication to the art of the katana. I thought he was in his late 50s maybe early 60s, but to be 8th Dan and Grandmaster at 50 is amazing. Arigato Gozaimasu Shogo and Seki Sensei.
Truly a beloved piece of functional art.
Words are not enough 👍🙏
I got to use white lighting 400 year old blade from my sensei it felt like magic
That's the sword his star pupil will use to avenge him after a rival clan carries out an assassination
I hope Seki Sensei never has to use it in anger.
That blade is in perfect condition for him to hav had it 24 years 😮😮😮😮
I didn't think he was that young. He looks older than 50.
Wow what an honor. Thank you so much! it's in pristine condition obviously.
So Seki Sensei has:
- katana from his master in rough shape that he uses for kata and drilling
- katana he bought at a tournament for tournament and tests
- and katana smithed for him that he uses for cutting demos
Why does seki-sensei then, in another video, oppose the idea of having a custom-made sword? Was the sword smithed for him made to the smith's preferences and he simply requested one for him without specifications?
Thank you for leaving a comment!
He has never opposed the idea of making a custom katana! I think you’re talking about someone else!
Yes that was Shogo's personal opinion not Seki Sensei. I have a feeling Seki Sensei would be a little more utilitarian in that sense.
cool katana history!
I just use an broomstick lmao
cool... thanks again!! :)
Well, you're certainly one my wife's favorite martial artists now -- those dragonfly me menuki caught her attention real quick.
I still have my abs plastic katana that my father bought for me in Malaysia, I named my katana 'kurobao' it means black blade sword
Is kurobato sorry
I want to have a Katana. I like the Iaido.
Nice Hamon
I want one .....

Is the tsuka ito leather?
What material do you think is best for tsuka ito?
Seki sensei explained he prefers the typical cotton, because it is strong towards getting wet too!
@@letsasksekisensei Thank you!
whats the steel of the katana? tamahagane?
Yes, that’s right!
Dear Seki Sensei,
I am planning on buying a katana to train with.
Where is the ideal balance for a katana? Specifically, for Iaido and/or combat. Where is the balance located on your favorite katana? (how many cm from the tsuba)
Thanks!
Bushindo style NYC 2oo2 _*; 2024 love it.
I train in iaido for about a year, and I am still training with a bokken, for 1 reason only: I am 17yo and here in the Netherlands a katana falls under category 4 weapons, meaning that you have to be 18yo or older to own it
What about an iaito sword?
@@martialman12 I was looking at a shinkan and the site advertised iaito as a category 4 weapon. I asked a cop and he said that everyone can own an iaito if they just have it out of sight
@nigel5014 makes sense. I can't imagine they make a problem out of it if you're using it as part of training of a recognized school of practice. I bring my iaito with me to class in NYC everyday I go. Just in a silk wrap bag, never even been stopped by the NYPD yet. It's not a weapon as it is not meant to impact anything and it is dulled and made of aluminum alloy, just a sword like object that is good for training. Of course you can't just swing it around in public that would freak people out, which is also why I don't expose my sword when transporting jt to class, and I keep it in the silk wrap bag. However most people that see me including the NYPD recognize what it probably is.
@@martialman12 yea the cop also says like that you can't make any any stops like with your friends at a skatepark or something, since I asked him when the training was over, he asked me if he could see what i had in the back. I showed him my bokken and he loved it, since he did aikido and used a bokken sometimes. And of course he needed to take a photo with it
That's a very long blade! He must be quite tall or have very long arms!
What does that weigh?
is it a disgrace if a samurai never killed anyone in his life?
There no way a 300 to 1000$ katana forged by European Blacksmith can come close to real katana made by Japanese traditional
Style
Competently made spring steel katana is miles better than traditional made. So, in terms of performance, it's the other way round. Steels we have now are just godlike compared to traditional steels. Japanese katanas are beautiful but contemporary metallurgy is on s different level. You can make sturdier, harder yet more flexible, and rustproof blade that will hold edge seemingly forever even if you chop wood with it. So no, Japanese made swords don't come close if you're after performance. But making blade from supersteel will cost you way more than 1000$. Still, good spring steel blades are affordable and very durable so please, don't underestimate modern metallurgy. Even last 20 years we advanced steels from very good to godlike if seen by someone who works with traditional methods.
A live katana made with modern metallurgy will perform many times better than a katana made from tamahagane with traditional forging techniques. But in Japan, if it’s not made from tamahagane and using traditional techniques, it’s merely a weapon. A modern katana from somebody like Howard Clark can be had starting at a few thousand dollars.

Is there any reason why no body is wearing white GI
Is there a reason why black is a problem?
@@letsasksekisensei no body wear white GI only black or blue in iaido
No body wear white GI only black or blue
How can you determine if a katana fits your hands perfectly?
